Lovely spot for a relaxing get away. We spent several days going to the Finger Lakes for wine and cider tasteing and the rest chilling on the deck. Local family visited and everyone enjoyed swimming and floating in the bay. The local Sodus Point beach was a nice change and uncrowded.
We had an amazing visit. Hikes at Chimney Bluffs, and very reasonable boat rentals brought us to the sandbar. The house had every detail we needed and the layout was perfect for our group!

Perfect view of Sodus Bay and very secluded.
My family had a wonderful time and plan to rent this cottage again in 2019, but for a longer time frame to better enjoy the accommodations.

Maureen we couldn't be more pleased to have you come every year! Guests such as you make it feel
worthwhile to share our dream. The cottage is frequently needy, as all homes on the water in a sometimes inhospitable climate can be. So when the maintenance seems insurmountable, heartwarming reviews make all the difference!
Loved this lakeside retreat. House lovingly updated. A bit of a drive to some attractions but really enjoyed the serene Beauty of being on the lake. It was so nice to have our pets with us and they enjoyed being out on the large deck with us.
A great vacation well enjoyed by all!

We really enjoyed our time at Happy Trails. The view from the house and the deck was beautiful. We enjoyed being on the water although it should be noted that there are 50 steps to the water and the stairs are a quite uneven. The cottage was very comfortable and my family really liked it. We had a great time together and have decided that we would definitely go back.

Thank you for appreciating a spot that we consider a piece of Heaven! We're so fortunate to have found it and happiest to share it with others such as yourselves.
It was okay. I would have rather been able to contact the owner before I rented as I used to be able to with VRBO. That us why I would use it rather than other rental services.

Response from VrboOwner on 26 August 2023
Yes, Vicki, I agree! It is only natural that both guests and hosts have questions they might wish to be answered for committing to a rental. VRBO maintains that guests may cancel without consequence within the cancelation period, in our case, 60 days prior to rental. Conversely,
hosts are penalized if they cancel for any reason at any time.
Please contact us directly if you'd like to plan a future visit. We would welcome your family!
This was my third time staying. I love this property. Breathtaking sun rises and sunsets. Modern amenities. It is the perfect place to unwind and relax. The deck is awesome to sit and enjoy the view. My dog and i enjoyed swimming. I will return next year as it eill now become a tradition. I love it there.

Beautiful, relaxing, private
This was our family's 4th year at the cottage. The new rugs were nice. It didn't disappoint. The cottage was private, open and spacious, relaxing, clean and allowed us all to have a great week at the lake. Even with all the rain the dock was useable- thank you!!! We will be back!!

We already booked to return. This property is awesome. We had an issue with ac on holiday and the owner got someone over to remedy very quickly. The sunsets are spectacular. The deck is where we spent most of our time. It was a wonderful experience. We will be going back in a few months

Thank you Cheryl for taking the time to write your comments. You helped us discover one of the quirks of our new HVAC system. So happy you're returning soon. Late summer and fall
are fabulous seasons to visit.
This is our second trip to this beautiful home. We can not say enough about the views, location and the amenities. The interior design and all the little extras add up to such a special experience. Plus being able to bring our dog along is the best. We tried a new place called Rileys (only minutes away) and water views with outdoor dining. The food was excellent and very reasonable. Also right next door is a brewery which is also dog friendly. LOVE this area and the accommodations. We will be back.

PICTURE PERFECT
We can not say enough good things about this property. Last minute vacation plans and so thankful the owners are dog friendly. The house was very accommodating with loads of amenities. Beautiful view and great location. We did a day trip to Niagara Falls, hiking at Chimney Bluffs State Park (beautiful), wineries, Sodus Bay Beach and the list goes on. Great restaurants in the waterfront town too! The owners were very responsive to our needs and any questions were answered immediately. They went the extra mile to make sure our stay was as wonderful as possible.

This is a beautifully landscaped property with an amazing view of Sodus Bay. The deck was large enough for the whole family to enjoy. There is a small yard for games and for the dog. Our dog enjoyed swimming every day and was exhausted by the end of the week. Towels and bed linens are not provided so be sure to bring your own. Also, there is no washer and dryer.

Thank you Christine for taking the time to provide feedback and help for future guests. We are considering offering a discount to guest who bring linens so it doesn't appear as an extra cost. many people prefer their own and/or saving money. We keep the rental cost as low as possible. The option based on the allotted time for housekeeping cannot always cover laundering in house and there aren't commercial alternatives in small towns such as ours.
Hope you will return again soon! We offer various discounts for return visitors.
Wishing you. a great fall ahead

The pristine view from the deck cannot be duplicated. The appointments inside are so charming and the cottage is so well equipped making a weeks stay sooooo easy. But….it’s all about the outdoors!! The large deck is just incredible - the view is mesmerizing- the side yards and thoughtful plantings are enchanting!! This was our 2nd time back and this time we brought along my brother and sister- in-law. They travelled from beautiful Southern California and were not disappointed! Thank you so much Aurora and Fred for sharing your piece of paradise! Truly a treasure!

What we enjoyed most was sitting on the large deck overlooking Sodus Bay. Sunset was our favorite time of day to watch the clouds and water. Beautiful view, lots of birds, lovely landscaping. The interior of the house was charming, bright colors, lots of vintage furniture and decorative items, well equipped kitchen. Many wooden steps down from the deck to the shoreline, a bit hard for the oldest and youngest to navigate. We wished we’d packed paper towels, toilet paper and napkins as the supplies in the house were minimal and shopping options nearby were limited. All in all a good experience with lots of local and day trip options that family members of all ages enjoyed.

We share your enjoyment of the gorgeous natural setting here. Our home was renovated completely in 2019 with our retirement in mind. The stairs to the dock have been stabilized for safety, although admittedly a bit like a fun house to navigate.
I regret that we cannot provide all replaceable products as we don't have the storage for such. Instead, we supply an abundance of gourmet appliances, pots & pans, herbs & spices, dish detergent, hand dishwashing detergent, hand soap, toiletries, etc. Having stayed in many rental properties, we endeavor to make it easier than most to move in without bringing the kitchen sink. We provide initial toilet paper and paper towels so no trip is urgent. We make last minute purchases at Dollar General 10 minutes away and the Corner Store, a mere 5. In the future, please don't hesitate to call.
Hope you'll be making this your vacation choice again soon!

We enjoyed staying at this lovely house for the week. The view of the lake was amazing especially the sunrises and sunsets. The location was great for our daily road trips to Rochester, Ithaca and Letchworth Park and other spots. The neighborhood was quiet. The house is located on a dead end road. We took the dog for a walk each morning before got in the car to go exploring. The property owners were great to work with. We had one question while we were there and when we contacted the owner we received our answer. Prior to arrival any questions I had were answered. The house was clean and fully stocked with all that we could need Thank you for opening your house to others.

We are pleased to have guests such as yourselves who share our love for the incredible respite this home and area is to us. Our dogs seem to love their vacations as much as we do, so we're happy when other families can stay together as well. Thank you for your generous observations. it is so valuable to us and others!
This adorable house is a great place to spend time with family with a large, open, multi-level family room and kitchen off to the side. The furnishings are cute with eclectic antiques throughout. The panoramic view of Sodus Bay out the back windows is gorgeous. The house is located 1 hour from Syracuse and Rochester and 45 minutes from the north end of the Finger Lakes. There is plenty of cookware in the kitchen. You could easily cook Thanksgiving dinner here without needing to bring anything. The fireplace is beautiful and a nice place to sit in the evening. There are plenty of places nearby that sell firewood for better prices than the supermarket.
We visited the house in late November. Outside temperatures were 30-40. The heater struggled to keep the house warm, as it was chilly inside at 64 even with the thermostat raised. The hardwood floors felt cooler. A comfy sweatshirt and slippers is recommended.

Michael, we are always grateful for thoughtful commentary such as yours. Before CoVid, we hadn't received rental requests in the cold months. This year the new HVAC system performance hadn't yet been put to the test. The wall units are magnificent during the summer, but rely on a heat pump in the winter. We, too discovered that additional heat sources may be required in the frigid north. The coziness of the fireplace seems to do the trick for the main house if you like sleeping with warm fluffy duvets. Space heaters in the bathrooms can create a sauna for showering. We purchased overhead heat lamps but the wiring (in this old house) for them was implausible.
Thanks again and come back soon!

Good location and water access with some problems
I just want to list out the facts here. Pros: great location, close to beach for sunset; easy access to lake; great for sunrise; charming house; have tons of cooking equipment; close to Niagara Falls and finger lakes. Cons: the house hasn’t been taken cared of carefully. generally not clean, smells, lots of bugs in the small bathroom and the sink is clogged. One bathroom door was accidentally locked and 7 of us had to share one tiny bathroom until the owner responded to us 11 hours later . Neighbor’s big dogs leashed free came to the front door and backyard deck. We were terrified since we don’t know them. One of them pooped right by the entrance, the owner did not proactively think a way to clean it up even though they seems lived minutes away from the house or knows the owner of the dog. At least do something. The backyard stairs to the lake wiggles a lot and very slippery. There is a safety concern. No access to washer and dryer which is not convenient.

We're so happy to know you've discovered the great things about this spot and appreciate our home. So many guests have made a special point of raving about it's charms; we take pride in our complete renovation and maintenance of this 1952 lake cottage. The price of being located in a gorgeous country setting, is bugs in the summer. We spray the exterior every spring to reduce the population, but they do live here. If doors are open often, as guests go in and out, then bugs come in as well. Likewise, in a relaxed waterfront community, friendly neighbor dogs may roam. We rent to guests such as yourself, who bring large dogs, assuming there is mutual respect. I'm glad we could quickly reassure you that we knew these dogs and owners by name and could attest to their fine character. However, we do not have contact information for everyone in the neighborhood, as many, such as those in question, are there on vacation, not as residents. We employ a manager for household needs, but have never requested that he remove dog poop and didn't realize that was your expectation. Since you left it for the housekeepers to dispose of, it shouldn't have posed too great a problem.
After one of your guests locked the bathroom door, you realized when speaking with me, that the pin to pop the lock was over the door. In this case, over the other bathroom door you were all piling into. With the exception of late on a Saturday night, we pay attention to replying promptly to guests needs. We encourage phone calls at any hour for emergencies. In this case, your call would have been answered in a timely fashion.
A state of the art air filtering unit is located in the great room for anyone with allergies; but we've had no other complaints about smell.
The description and photos of the cottage show that the wooden stairway is indeed crooked, as erosion is inevitable. However, the stairs have been carefully stabilized and are reliable. I am noting to future guests who also may not have read about all the amenities we provide, that a washer and dryer is not among them. Fortunately most guests that choose to come can pack for a week or use the local launder mat.
We are forever grateful for the fine folk who have left wonderful stories in our guest book of their family activities they've shared, from meals on the deck overlooking the Bay, to board games in the great room on a rainy day. Their thoughtful reviews are what makes it worthwhile to continue to welcome guests!
Nice location, quiet area, great layout in the house. Note if you have mobility limited folks - although the house is one floor, there are multiple single-step ups and down dividing areas.

Hello Ruchi
You are absolutely correct about notifying guests about this idiosyncratic old house. We assume there were add-ons over the years that could explain the ups and downs. If anyone mentions a mobility concern we advise against this rental. We will note it in the description as well.Thank you.

About the host
Hosted by Aurora or Fred
Our family includes Teddy and Gus, our standard poodles who didn't make it into the photo but are very much in our lives. Aurora owns a day spa, Fred is recently retired CEO for a behavioral health company, and our son Cody, lives in Baltimore. We were drawn to Sodus Bay because Aurora’s family had a cottage there and her father grew up on the lake. We fell in love immediately and began to rent and bought Happy Trails in 2008. We live on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and are fortunate to have found a house on Lake Ontario that we love. Come share our dream !!
Why they chose this property
We have been coming to Sodus Bay for over 20 years. Re-uniting with family and bringing in-laws and friends, we get to share our love for the perfect place to go back in time. The towns, the beach, the neighbors and even the weather seem to be the way I remember it from childhood. That is, a slower pace where the person behind the cash register stops to chat; real peace and quiet with thousands of stars; no need to lock the doors; warm sunny days with low humidity; wild flowers bursting with color by the side of the road...Of course there's endless water from the Bay to Lake Ontario to the Finger Lakes and the Erie Canal.
What makes this property unique
Having a spectacular view of Sodus Bay from sunrise to moonrise is unbelievably beautiful! You can relax on our large deck over looking the bay and have dinner by moonlight. Guests can swim off our dock while the kids enjoy playing on the floating foam platform! The house is beautifully appointed, and the kitchen well stocked for any gourmet! You know you're in the right place and it's always the right time. Of course our company often like to fish off our dock which means dinner is super fresh. Just a five minute ride away you can find the best homemade fruit pies we've ever eaten. Aurora’s family enjoy playing at the Sodus Golf Club-gorgeous rolling green acres. The younger set are happy at the miniature golf course and we're all up for one of the local ice cream spots. For those wanting to explore the area further we are only 30 minutes from the finger lakes, in particular Keuka and Seneca. Keuka is a wonderful intimate lake with numerous restaurants and local shopping. Superlatives abound!
