About this property

Stumble Beach - Quiet & Private 2-Acre Retreat on Lake Ontario

This bungalow cottage and property are ideal for individuals or families seeking a private and quiet setting and who enjoy being close to nature. A gradual 160-foot-wide stony beach provides easy access to Lake Ontario for swimming, snorkeling, rafting or launching kayaks & canoes. (Larger water craft, e.g., jet skis or boats can be launched at the nearby marinas or state boat ramps.) Adjacent to the beach is a large 60 x 100 ft lawn that’s perfect for kicking the soccer ball, tossing the baseball, or just relaxing on the lounge chairs in the sun as you watch the occasional boat or birds pass by. Enjoy spectacular sunsets as you roast marshmallows on a beach bonfire while your kids play on the swing set or catch frogs in the nearby pond.

The cottage, which is a fully-furnished classic A-Frame bungalow built in 1995, is nestled in the woods and opens up to the beach via an enchanting footpath. It features a unique architecture, upstairs loft bedroom and first floor bedroom, 2 full bathrooms, kitchen, great room and a 24 x 16 ft elevated deck which provides impressive views of the beach front and Lake Ontario.

The 20-foot-high great room and bedrooms are kept cool on summer nights with ceiling fans and whole-house heat pump. Prepare food at the gas grill on the deck, or at the lake using the charcoal grill. The loft bedroom has a queen size bed and single-size murphy bed, and the main floor bedroom has an adjustable queen and narrow murphy bed. When the pullout sofa is used, the bungalow can comfortably sleep 8 guests. The kitchen is fully equipped with utensils, dinnerware, cookware, cutlery and table condiments.

This bungalow is "Alexa enabled", meaning Amazon Echo Dots are located in the bedrooms and great room, and can optionally be used to control room lighting, HVAC, play games, get the weather, or play virtually any song you've ever heard that was published & released (over 70+ million songs!).

The owner will happily provide you with a demo and list of commands on how to use Alexa. But if you're not comfortable with home automation devices like Alexa, we can easily unplug them during your stay. Alexa is an optional accessory to make your stay more enjoyable and eliminate having to bring CDs or other media. All new guests are greeted by the owner when they arrive and are given an overview of the bungalow’s interior features, and a tour of the property.

During the summer of 2020 (due to the Covid-19 pandemic), both the Loft and main- floor bedrooms were upgraded so that they can be quickly reconfigured into study areas and work-from-home offices. (E.g. the "loft bedroom" can be converted into a "loft office", by stowing the murphy bed back into the wall, and by opening the wall-mounted collapsible office desk.) The Roku-enabled streaming TVs in each bedroom also double as secondary computer monitors so that school-age children can continue their remote learning, or, so that adults can conveniently work-from-home and stay as connected to the office as they choose via tools like Zoom and WebEx. WiFi is available throughout the bungalow and on the deck too, which can double as an outdoor office.

Guests are welcome to use our two sit-on-top kayaks, floats, and other water toys during their stay.

If you're into astronomy, use our telescope and binoculars to study the moon and star constellations. On clear nights, you'll be able to see many earth-orbiting satellites (about 1 to 3 every 10 minutes). And If you time your visit just right, you'll even be able to spot the International Space Station - ISS as it passes by 250 miles (400 km) overhead or the Space X satellite train.

This property is located on a private gravel lane about 2 miles from Pultneyville, 6 miles from Williamson, 7 miles from Sodus Point, and 25 miles from Rochester. The gravel driveway can easily accommodate up to 6 cars.

We loved our stay! Tom was easy to communicate with and gave us a tour of the property and what to expect. One of the best properties we’ve ever stayed at! The house was very clean and the property was very well kept! What an absolute paradise!

All we needed to have a perfect vacation!

Very comfortable, secluded, beautiful inside and outside cottage! Very friendly and helpful host! Perfect temperatures of water and air, clear water (we even snorkeled). We enjoyed watching small birds at the birdfeeders, heron was visiting the pond often. Location is very good too: many places to see, many wineries and cideries to visit, grocery stores nearby while being surrounded by nature and farms.

Quiet and peaceful

In need of a fall break, my husband and I found Stumble Beach to fulfill all our wishes. While able to enjoy all the beauty of nature, the cottage was both comfortable and cozy. Tom is an exemplary host and everything that is needed for a wonderful vacation is available. We could not be happier with our experience and Stumble Beach. Emmett, our golden, gives it 5 🐾’s. Tom, thank you for a truly exceptional experience.

Wonderful getaway

Stumble Beach is entirely as advertised! It is a wonderful retreat away from it all. The house is very well appointed, and the owner, Tom, has been very thorough in trying to make sure guests have what they need. The path down to the water is so nice, and Lake Ontario was clear and inviting. The house was big enough for our family of 4 (2 teenagers) and allowed for us to both be together and spread out as needed. The house served as a great spot to relax and as a convenient jumping off spot for short day trips. We highly recommend Sodus Point and Chimney Bluffs State Park - and it’s very close to Rochester if you have a blustery day or are looking for a change of scene.

An Idyllic on Lake Ontario

We were visiting from Michigan, and this fully furnished A-frame cottage/cabin on the lake gave us an ideal location to host family and friends in the greater Rochester area that we had not seen since before the pandemic. Everything was spotless and organized, the owner met us at check-in and walked us through a "user's manual" of everything we needed to know to happily relax and entertain. We felt very much at home, bought goodies at the local grocer's and ordered yummy pizza from the Pizza Stop for our visitors, so they were well fed after hunting for their special takeaway stone on the property's private "stumble" beach.

Magical place!

This home is just in the most magical spot. The owner is extremely friendly, his attention to detail apparent in the storybook like accents throughout the property. We felt like we were in a fairytale, or even a painting while watching the unbelievable sunsets over the water. The surrounding area is not tourist-y, so if that’s what you’re looking for, this isn’t the area for you. We loved it. It kind of felt like going back in time when things were slower, which for us is exactly what a vacation should be! We never wanted to leave! If nature is your thing, there is plenty to do! Thanks again, Tom, for sharing this place with us!

A piece of lake front paradise

Thank you Tom for the lovely A frame cottage on the lake. We enjoyed our stay! This cottage is very comfortable, from the beds to the living area and patio furniture. Tom has just about anything you would need as well. To my eye was fully stocked. You get a glimpse of sunrise through the kitchen window. Almost every evening we had an amazing view of incredible sunsets. It is truly decompressing. There are large stones leading to a stony beach, and like many other posts, water shoes are a must. There is a place on the beach for a fire to make s’mores. Many chairs along the beach to enjoy the view! We used the kayak, which was my favorite. He has plenty of life preservers to use, and if you don’t kayak, he has inner tubes to use. The patio was amazing as well. You sit amongst a lot of birds, who come in frequently to eat seed. We saw a couple grey foxes, a flock of trumpeter swans, osprey, common loons, gulls, ducks and herons. And we really enjoyed bringing our dogs. We had 5 people at the cottage and were comfortable. Chimney Bluffs Park, the Cornwall Preserve and Sodus Point Lighthouse are all close, and were beautiful hikes/walks. As you can see, I do recommend this property for a week to truly relax or go out and hike and explore the area.

When I was looking for pet friendly rentals in the area, I saw quite a few but kept going back to Stumble Beach. I'm glad I listened to my gut because it was a wonderful find. The pictures do not do this justice in that it has to be seen in person. When my husband and I got down to the lake we were amazed and just let out a collective "WOW!". Tom's (the host) description was super accurate. The cottage is beautiful and he has thought of everything. The path to the lake is very whimsical, especially when the lights come on. You almost feel like fairies will start flitting about. Tom was there to greet us and was very thorough about the stay at the cottage. He was very quick to respond to any questions or issues we may have had. We were there in mid-October from Sunday to Sunday. We had brought food in a cooler and I'm glad we did because a lot of the restaurants were closed at the beginning of the week (if you don't mind fast food, there are places a short drive away). The peacefulness and tranquility were just what we needed to get away from the daily grind. We are looking forward to returning next year. Thanks again Tom for sharing your wonderful cottage/property. It's a little piece of heaven. Tom, you are a most gracious host!

wonderful cozy cottage… loved the treetop patio with peekaboo view of the lake and the fairy trail to the beach. The only issue is the rocks are quite treacherous getting in and out of the water but doable when the water is calm. We ended up driving to chimney bluffs to swim which is not far and a Gorgeous spot. Incredible sunsets! The host is amazing and the cottage is very well stocked. Can’t wait to come back to this special place!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Stumble Beach Cottage. The A-frame cottage was cozy, clean, and comfortable. The large deck was a relaxing place to enjoy meals and the natural surroundings. The wooded mulch path to the beach was enchanting to walk through and enjoy the large beach and lawn area. Tom is an excellent host and you can see he takes great care of the property.

Stumble Beach review

We came up to visit our son for a week. We were able to trailer motorcycles out and enjoy a few days of country sightseeing. Tom had given us a few recommendations, and we enjoyed several destinations that he gave us! Parking was a little tight with a trailer, but we were able to make it work! The lane is a gravel lane in which taking the bikes down was not too precarious as it was pretty packed. Stumble Beach is pet friendly, which is always a plus for us as our dog loves to travel as well. Tom has the cabin set up to be able to work from home which we took advantage of while our son was working. All in all, we will defiantly stay at again the next time we come up to the Sodus area!

A cozy, comfortable get-away with the perks of nature!

This property is exactly as advertised. We found it to be very peaceful, quiet, secluded, and relaxing! We traveled as a family of 4, all adults, plus two dogs and felt the accommodations were just right. (It may be a bit tight for more than 4 adults.) The cottage is very well stocked including things like bug spray, citronella candles, water floats and toys, condiments, games, and even paint and brushes for rock painting! The host, Tom, has really thought of everything. During our stay, the water was very ocean-like, with waves and wind. But we did enjoy a day or two of calm, crystal-clear water where snorkeling was surprisingly enjoyable (gear is on sight). Tom also provided water shoes, which we all felt were a must to navigate the rocks of the beach. The cottage does lack a dishwasher and we unfortunately came across a few mugs, plates, and silverware that were stored away dirty. We love rock painting, kayaking, and a fire by the lake. And the ice cream at Burnap's Farm was amazing! Tom was a great host; very welcoming and thorough and made us feel right at home!

Enchanting

The property is beautiful inside and out. Perfectly maintained with everything you could possibly need...from bug spray to water floats. Our grandchildren loved the path to the lake and play gym and called it the fairy path. The path opens up to the beautiful lake, an amazing enormous lawn with chairs, tables and a lovely pond you can walk around. A truly enchanting house in the woods.

Very Relaxing Stay

Tom, the owner, greeted me when I arrived and gave me a very thorough overview of the property and its amenities. The house is very well equipped and was in spotless condition. No need to bring any chargers or cables for your electronic devices as there are ports and cables available on virtually every table, desk, and nightstand. There's even a work area in the loft with an external monitor for your laptop! I had the whole place to myself as my wife was unable to accompany me as planned due to some unexpected family issues. I spent a great deal of time in the sitting area down by the lake, usually reading or just relaxing. There are plenty of other things to do however if you're so inclined. Highest recommendation and definitely a place I would like to return to in the future.

By far the best place on VRBO. Tom's attention to detail cannot be surpassed. If you needed something it was there. So much to do inside the cottage and out. Loved the short walk to the lake and all the painted rocks on the path. The birds and chipmunks keep us entertained for hours while we drank multiple bottles of wine. Flawless experience. Thanks Tom.

Another great visit!

We stayed here last year, and when we saw that Tom's place was right in the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we knew it'd be the perfect place to enjoy it! Tom was wonderful to accommodate us so early in the season, and just as last year, the stay was perfect. Every detail of the house is geared toward comfort and ease of use, and THE VIEW of Lake Ontario right in the backyard is so wonderful and calming. We thought the place was perfect last year, but we were blown away to see he'd made a number of improvements, based on guest feedback, including new indoor and outdoor lighting. We also had a BLAST with the rock painting! The location is perfect if you want to just have a relaxing cottage getaway, but there are also tons of places to hike and explore nearby, and there are lots of breweries and wineries in the area. It also gets the dog seal of approval! Our dog has joined us on both visits, and she always has a great stay exploring the grounds with us and relaxing in the cottage.

November Holiday at the Lake

Wonderful house and property! The owner has thought of everything! Smart home with all the perks to be comfortable and warm. We experienced the "November Winds" and never had issues with heat or power. We cooked while there and the kitchen has very nice sets of pots, pans, knives, etc. Our 12-year old daughter enjoyed painting rocks from the beach. Comfortable beds and high quality linens and towels. Also, really nice that the owner has lights on the path to the beach. We were able to walk our dogs at night with no issues. We loved our stay!

As an avid wood worker, hiker, ornithologist, options trader, and life-long learner … I thoroughly enjoy meeting new (and repeat) guests. My mission is to help you determine whether Stumble Beach is a good fit for your vacationing needs, and if it is, to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Why they chose this property

Construction of this A-Frame cottage was begun by the owner with help from family, friends, and a few sub-contractors in 1994. Two and one-half years later, we christened the cottage with our first Labor Day party. The owner and his family have spent many wonderful spring, summer, and autumn days enjoying the flora and fauna of the property. You'll likely see quite a variety of wild animals during your stay, including: red fox, deer, raccoon, turtles and rabbits to name a few. Native bird species include: humming birds, wood peckers, nut hatches, robins, cardinals, owls, ducks, geese, sea gulls, great blue heron, and even bald eagles.

Lake Ontario with its 50-mile width and 190-mile length, has an infinite number of hues and textures that will catch your eye from dawn to dusk. The wave action on the shoreline is more frequent than what you'll find on the Atlantic or Pacific coasts of North America. If you enjoy stargazing, then you'll be impressed as the Big Dipper plants itself in the sky directly over the beach throughout the summer months.

What makes this property unique

Snorkeling in Lake Ontario is a real treat with visibility around 50 ft with a good diving mask. If a summer storm rolls in from the West, the lake transforms itself from a placid friend into an angry old man with its 4-foot-high waves. Mother Nature unleashed!

Guests are welcome to use our two sit-on-top kayaks, floats, and other water toys during their stay.

If you're into astronomy, use our telescope and binoculars to study the moon and star constellations. On nights when the cloud cover is low, you'll be able to see many earth orbiting satellites (about 1 or 2 every 10 minutes). And If you time your visit just right, you'll even be able to spot the International Space Station - ISS as it passes by 250 miles (400 km) overhead.
