About this property
Spacious 4 Bed Devon Holiday House Near Sea; Sleeps 8. Pet friendly. Refurb 2024
At Island House, you can wake up to views over the picturesque village green and rolling hills to the sea, whilst planning a short walk to the nearby farm shop with on-site cafe and brewery, a walk by Slapton Ley and Slapton Sands or around the South West Coast Path, with fish and chips on the beach, and a visit to one of the two village pubs in the evening, all without getting into your car.
Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve is the largest natural lake in south-west England, and is home to many resident and visiting birds, and animals such as otters, so it is great for bird-spotters and nature-lovers, as well as being a popular walking spot.
Further afield are popular National Trust properties, such as Agatha Cristie's Greenway, National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor, picturesque towns and villages, such as Dartmouth and Salcombe, and numerous walks and beaches to enjoy.
Island House boasts an enviable position in a beautiful rural location with a large fully enclosed garden with a patio. The property has recently been extended and altered to include an accessible downstairs en-suite double bedroom and an entry porch. Island House is set in the popular picture-postcard village of Stokenham, with its thatched cottages, picturesque 13th century pub and a second pub within easy walking distance. Both pubs serve a range of food made locally sourced ingredients. The house overlooks the child-friendly village green and Norman church. The nearest beaches can be enjoyed less than a mile away. The South West Coast Path, the longest footpath in Britain, passes close to the village and provides superb walking through stunning and dramatic countryside.
Nearby Kingsbridge is a busy market town distinguished by fine Tudor and Georgian buildings, with a largely Elizabethan colonnaded Shambles. A summer ferry runs from here to the sailing and holiday resort of Salcombe, whose calm waters are strewn with small craft, with the ruined Fort Charles at the entrance to the harbour injecting a touch of romance. Just east of Island House approximately 1m away is the lagoon of the Slapton Ley nature reserve which supports many birds, including herons, terns, widgeon and great crested grebes.
Less than ten miles along the coast is Dartmouth, which is one of the most popular and picturesque tourist destinations in Devon, as it's not only close to the sea, but it's also situated on the River Dart.
Further afield is the unique resort of Torquay, where the small marina can seem almost Mediterranean, especially at night when coloured lights festoon the harbour.
The ground floor of the property is all on one level and comprises a hall which runs through the property. The hall provides access to the kitchen overlooking the rear private garden. The dining room can be accessed through double doors from the kitchen or from the Hall. The sitting room is comfortably furnished and includes a flat screen TV and DVD. The new ‘Jack and Jill’ shower room can be accessed from the hall, or from the new downstairs bedroom. This bedroom can be made up as a double or twin room.
Upstairs, the two front bedrooms both have a sea view and have double beds. One of these has an ensuite shower room. The rear bedroom is a twin room. All four bedrooms are well appointed and a good size. The family bathroom has a full-sized bath and separate shower. The first floor is completed by a WC ( there are 4 toilets in total). There is a further put up bed that can be used to accommodate a ninth visitor if required and there is also a travel cot available.
There are many books for you to enjoy during your stay, and a selection of jigsaws, games and DVDs.
Bedding and towels can be provided but this is subject to an additional charge
