We enjoyed being remote in a beautiful historic house. We gardened a little, cooked too, using the grill, and ate outside. We did need the mosquito repellent we found there. The house is on the national register so it’s seriously important and interesting in every room. The owners are collectors of every odd thing as well as books so we were never bored.

Owners were wonderful but....
This is a long review, please bear with me! The owners of the property are excellent - highly responsive, friendly, and available at anytime! They really work hard to make this a pleasant stay. We were greeted upon check-in with a lovely picnic basket with champagne & ingredients for s'mores. The property has a lot of potential, but there were a few issues that made our trip a bit of a bummer. First, know that there isn't much at all directly around it. It's 40 mins to the nearest city. If you're looking to just stay in and relax, this is your place. The outdoor grounds are also beautiful and lovely to explore. However, it's very important to know that most of the windows do not have screens. Being that there is no air conditioning, windows need to be opened in hot weather to prevent the house from becoming too hot to be in, but doing so allows an unbelievable amount of insects to fly/crawl right inside. It becomes akin to camping in the middle of summer while leaving your tent wide open all day and night. Fortunately, we didn't have too many mosquitoes the first couple of nights, but we did on our third night, which meant a lot of bites overnight for us and our children. The lack of screens also meant lots of bugs getting into our food. For the price of the stay, I would've expected the windows to have screens to prevent this problem. If possible, it would also be great to just have some window units available for air conditioning in bedrooms in hot weather because the house does get incredibly hot and takes a long time to cool down. There are a ton of cool (breakable) knick knacks in the house, many of them low down, which is fun to look at, but if you are going to bring dogs like we did, know this in advance. There is a lot that any dog could accidentally break with just a tail wag. Luckily, this was not an issue for us, but just something to know ahead of time. We set aside our last day for boating as provided in the description, but unfortunately the boat broke down just 40 mins into our day. Certainly not the owner's fault by any means - they came out to tow us in within an hour and were extremely apologetic, but because of that, we had nothing to do that day and ended up leaving a night early since it was so incredibly hot. We were not entitled to any refund, so we just absorbed it. All in all, the location was extremely expensive, and I didn't feel the experience supported the price we paid. However, again, the owners were fantastic!
It's such a unique place and a really nice option to get away from it all. Bring your food/drinks, and don't leave. Just stay and enjoy the fireplace, nature, drinks in the garden, walking the property and exploring all it has to offer...very relaxing and lovely!
We decided to take a week off and travel back in time. Farrand Hall is a beautiful property : the house, the decor, the gardens and old trees.. its perfect! Jacob is a great host, you can easily reach out to him for any and all questions. Will come back!
Jacob was great answering all my questions and the place was beautiful, the only thing I wished we had was ac. That being said even without ac we had a great time and enjoyed everything they had to offer. We highly recommend it and would definitely go again!
Our experience here was lovely.
The atmosphere was very peaceful and pleasant, and everyone loved all the vintage charm and qualities of the house. It was warm when we arrived, but opening all the windows with screens helped to cool the house down. There are also ceiling/box fans in the bedrooms and sleeping was not an issue (also, the beds were comfortable!). Sitting in the den/library in the evening and feeling the cool summer cross-breeze flow through the room was just so nice.
The property was equipped with a lot for a long weekend of hanging out and not leaving much (condiments, bug spray, basic first-aid items, cookware/utensils/plates, outdoor games i.e. croquet and bags/cornhole...). We brought our own food and grilled quite a bit, and enjoyed a lot of outdoor time in the various outdoor spaces (the fenced-in yard was particularly nice for an 18 month old and small dog to run around).
Also, like any old building in which you will be opening doors and windows frequently, some insects get in, and some nature debris finds its way around. It happens. You wipe down a glass before you use it, and that's it! This was not an issue at all. I'm just mentioning it so that people don't unjustly knock a place for 'dirty' plates and glasses.
The wifi was spotty in some rooms, and there isn't a TV onsite, but the listing doesn't mention one so you should not be surprised. We did not pick this property to watch TV and be on our phones the whole time, so this was not an issue. As the title says, it's a place to unwind and unplug.
Overall, everyone had a great time! We will definitely be back!
Cozy, beautiful and magical! We rented the house for a fall weekend getaway with friends and it was more than perfect! The attention to detail, the homey-ness, and all the amazing work Jacob did restoring this historic property did not go unnoticed. It’s a quick trip from Chicago and the house is stocked with everything you could possibly need. We will definitely be staying here again!
