We really enjoyed our stay in your wonderful home. Besides our many hikes through the woods and along the shore, we liked our lazy time taking in the nature around the house.

Our stay was amazing! It was nice and quiet. My family loved fishing on the lake. The weather was beautiful. The WiFi worked well and we were able to work from the cabin without issue. Check in went smoothly and the kitchen had all the things needed for cooking meals. The history decorating the cabin walls was really neat. We would definitely return!

McKenzie Bay Retreat can't be beat

We had stayed here in the past and had a great time. Lots of space, plenty of area outside, well-equipped kitchen. Beautiful views of McKenzie Bay and surrounding ponds and woods. Lots of wildlife around (deer, eagles, sandhill cranes, snapping turtles). Great food at the Thunder Bay Inn a mile away. A half-hour drive gets you to all the attractions and amenities in Marquette.

A beautiful and well loved family camp with family memorabilia decorating the cabin, including beautiful handmade quilts. The area was beautiful, private, and secluded with easy access to stunning hiking trails.

Beautiful location!

This house is equipped with everything we needed. The only thing we could of needed to help with cleaning the frying pans was a scrubbing pad! We had a hard time getting the pans clean for the next guests. The property is quiet and secluded.

Perfect Fall Getaway

We came up from Alabama to see the fall colors. Loved the camp decor of the cabin and spent many hours on the porch enjoying our view of the pond. We were fortunate to see a couple of bald eagles flying over the pond and some deer feeding at the water's edge. If you're here to see the fall foliage, make sure to take a drive down 510. It's a well maintained gravel road not far from the cabin. It runs south about 20 miles to Hwy 41 and had some to the most spectacular colors we saw on our entire vacation.

Remote and Peaceful

While this was farther away from Marquette than we anticipated, we enjoyed the Big Bay area and were able to get everything we needed locally. The nearby beach at Lake Superior was a favorite spot, especially for my girls (ages 10 & 14). We enjoyed meals at the Lumberjack Tavern and the Thunder Bay Inn. Note that the Lumberjack is the only place open for an evening meeting on Mondays and Tuesdays; Wednesdays Thunder Bay is open but the Lumberjack is closed that day. Just be prepared there are not a lot of options close by to eat! The General Store had everything we needed to get by for breakfast at the cabin. Overall, it was a successful trip for three generations to enjoy a lovely property, watch the wildlife, and make some memories!

This is a fantastic property for a relaxing get away. Out of the city -but close to anything you wanted to do. The house was equipped with anything we needed to cook or play. The house shows off the history of the property along with their family tree. As a genealogist and history lover it was so much fun to read about it! There was a minor hiccup that happened just before we arrived and they went out of their way to get it corrected quickly for us! The house is warm and inviting, clean and well stocked. We had a great time here and they let us bring our "furry" son with us as well! He loved exploring and hiking around the yard and woods! It is truly a hidden gem of a place with a wonderful family that takes care of it!

The cabin was beautiful and was better than the pictures. You don't get a feel for how big the lake is or how spacious and nice the cabin is from the photos. It's a bit far from town but absolutely worth it and perfect for a weekend getaway.

The views of the lake were beautiful and the house was very clean. The house was perfect for my family, with enough space for the teenagers to have their own place to hang out. There's plenty of outdoor activities within a short drive.

We had an absolutely wonderful time staying at the Wilcox home. My two sons and I caught many jumbo perch and northern pike as well. The history of the family is very interesting, my family loved reading the articles and seeing all the pictures. I've stayed in quite a few VRBO's over the years and none as clean as this place. We'll be back!

Peaceful getaway

This was our 2nd stay and we are already booked for next year! Such a beautiful, peaceful place with a gorgeous view. The house is very clean and comfortable with everything we needed for our stay. There are several good places to eat very near by so we didn't do any cooking but the kitchen had all we would have needed if we had wanted to cook. We hated to leave this tranquil spot and are looking forward to returning next year!

Awesome home / cabin, tons of history and character

It was tough to get in since I didn’t get the right code. Could have been a mess, but we recovered nicely after a few calls and texts. The home is awesome, very spacious, with direct snowmobile and orv trail access. Right around the corner is a few restaurants and a bar. Great place.

Our parents first came to this area deer hunting in 1937. From then on it was a love affair that captured their hearts and finally moving here permanently in 1972. For the 8 of us children it was a vacation paradise and has become home for 7 of us.
Our parents taught us many strong family values and maintaining their home for others to share has become a priority since their deaths in 2005. You get a real taste of local history and the dedication to family and life that they shared.

Why they chose this property

If you enjoy watching birds out your window, deer grazing by the water, eagles flying over the water in search of dinner, watching the beaver swim, and the sound of a Sand Hill Crane, you will love our location. The rolling lawn is adjacent to the woods and gives a sense of privacy. This is truly a home to relax and enjoy your vacation, away from the busyness of the city, yet close enough to enjoy the highlights of Marquette and natural beauty of Big Bay.

What makes this property unique

There is plenty of room and all the amenities of home. Lake Independence is only a mile away and is known for its perch, walleye and northern pike. McKenzie Bay offers solitude and fun catching perch or pike - in the warm months. The ice is not safe for winter ice fishing.
