About this property
Family house near Elie, golf, beaches, sea view, great base for the East Neuk
Large family house available with stunning sea and hill views, perfect for families and friends, plenty of space for 7 or 8. This lovely family home is much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside! There is plenty of space over 3 floors to spread yourself out, as well as a sunny garden.
The name Steamdrifter comes from the kind of steam powered fishing boats once built in the village and used by the locals for fishing around the coast of Scotland. St Monans is still very proud of its boat building and fishing heritage.
The ground floor has an open plan living room with wood burning stove, smart TV, kitchen with huge island with bar stools and a solid oak floor. This leads through to a huge conservatory which contains the dining table, as well as a sofa and comfy chairs for relaxing and enjoying the view over the garden. There's garden furniture and a barbecue set for al fresco dining.
On the first floor is the master bedroom, a very large room with views over the harbour and the village, with an ensuite shower and toilet. Next door is a sweet twin room overlooking the back garden, beside the family bathroom.
Up the next staircase are 2 more bedrooms, a single room with great sea views, and a lovely double room looking over the hills and farmland to the north. There is also another sitting room facing south, with an open fire, and the best views of all, uninterrupted views over the Firth of Forth to the Bass rock, Berwick Law and the coast of East Lothian. Watch the ships going up and down, keep an eye out for dolphins!
The wifi signal is excellent on every floor, perfect for keeping in touch with family on Zoom or if you have a bit of work to do on Teams.
Rental includes basket of logs for wood-burning stove, coal for open fire on top floor, fresh eggs from our own hens when available. All towels and linen provided. Large shed at the bottom of the garden is perfect for cycles or canoes.
There is a grocery shop in the village and local supermarkets are well stocked and uncrowded. There are plenty of cafes and takeaways in the area if you don't want to cook.
This pretty village is a great base for exploring the East Neuk, with the beaches of Elie for swimming, sea-kayaking, sailing and canoeing, golf courses at Elie and Charleton, and of course St Andrews only 12 miles away. There are quirky shops, fine dining, historic sights and countryside walks all within a few minutes drive. Trips to the Highlands, Perthshire or Edinburgh are all easy from here. The village is about an hours drive from Edinburgh airport.
The East Pier Smokehouse and the Giddy Gannet provide good food all day while award-winning Craig Millar's seafood restaurant is there for fine dining. Pittenweem has galleries and cafes including the outstanding Cocoa Tree, with fabulous hot chocolate, and the best fish and chip shop in the area. The Cheese Farm is just along the road, for more than cheese, great lunches too. Ardross Farm shop can supply every need and Barnett's artisan breads are justly famous - feta and beetroot is one of my favourites. Kellie Castle with its wonderful garden is well worth a visit. Genteel Crail along the coast tempts with teashops and souvenirs. There's fresh and smoked fish from St Monans, and Balgove Farm Shop on the edge of St Andrews.
The house will be sanitized for each new set of guests and check-in is via a key in the key safe so no need to meet anyone unless you want to.
