About this property

Live In a Traditional Irish Pub

At Herlihy’s, there is an opportunity to play “mine host” in your own pub.

Yes! You will live quite literally in the pub. Herlihy’s Bar ceased trading as a licensed premises in 2017.

Since then the bar and ancillary areas have been re-commissioned into wheelchair friendly self-catering accommodation.

The bar counter is now home to a bespoke fitted kitchen, featuring all “mod cons”, the bar back remains in situ and the bar floor area has been transformed into living/dining space complete with up-cycled bar furniture and a sofa bed. In contrast to the traditional bar ambience, the remainder of the unit is ultramodern and encompasses a double bedroom, bathroom, complete with wet area and utility room. A private wheelchair accessible entrance leads into a hallway and a patio-door gives direct access from the bedroom to a beautiful garden (where one can barbecue weather permitting!), terrace and car park.

There is a lovely atmospheric ambience to the accommodation, making it perfect as a cosy welcoming venue for a totally relaxing break. It is the perfect location for a Kerry holiday just 1.5 km from Kerry Airport and 15 km from Killarney town centre. Plus a first rate taxi service. Being in the village, there is a supermarket, pharmacy, post office, takeaway and bar/restaurant on the doorstep.

Proprietor, Marie (whose family have owned the property since 1912) is a professional archaeologist, with a deep love of Ireland's rich and varied culture and heritage. She was the recipient of the 2015 Kerry Heritage Award. Marie is editor of The Kerry Magazine and current president of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society. Marie continues to live in the building and is happy to engage with guests and offer advice on what to see and do in the Kerry. She has a family of two cats, who can be guaranteed to socialise with her guests should the opportunity arise.

The magnificent Irish coastline of West Kerry, the Wild Atlasntic Way and Dingle are accessible by car in 30 minutes. Farranfore is also the ideal point of departure for a trip around the Ring of Kerry. The Counties many golf courses (Killarney, Killorglin, Dooks, Barrow, Castleisland and Ballybunnion) are easily accessible from Farranfore. For those just wanting to get away from it all, there are some lovely rural roads to be explored in the vicinity of the village. Herlihy's Half Way House, provides the ideal base for those wishing to experience the natural beauty of Killarney, with its spectacular mountain and lake scenery. The town itself is picturesque and offers an exhaustive selection of bars, hotels, restaurants and shopping experiences. Tralee the County Town is world renowned as home to the Rose of Tralee International Festival. It is also home to our national Folk Theatre, Siamsa Tíre. The town also boasts an aquadome and wetlands. Kerry's County Museum is to be found in Tralee town centre. Whilst on the outskirts of the town is Manor Shopping Centre. Castleisland a traditional Irish market town and Killorglin (home to Puck Fair) are both just down the road from Farrranfore.

Loved it!
We had originally only planned 2 days at this location, but it has such a convenient location to explore the SW part of Ireland by car, we ended coming back and booking for 3 more days! Marie is wonderful hostess! She was a great source of information about the area and her beautiful country.

Great base from which to explore SW Ireland!
It was first fun to stay in a place that was once a pub! Beautifully decorated and very well situated. We rented a car and we found it to be very nicely located to explore and have a place to return each evening. Marie was a delight and patient as we learned about plumbing fixtures functions we had not been familiar with. We had a lovely kitchen to cook our breakfast and with a store right across the street, it was quite convenient. There was parking off the road. Marie also let us know the train was within walking distance if we chose not to drive. Thank you again Marie!

About the host

Host profile image
Herlihy's, has been in the family since 1912, when Marie the current owner's grandfather, bought it as a wedding gift for his eldest daughter. Tragically, she died in 1925, at which time Marie's grandparent's took over the property. From 1925 until 1962, the pub was run by Marie's grandmother Kathleen. On her death Marie's mother Maura, took on the running of the business and Marie ran Herlihy's from 2006 to 2017. The business originated, as a Coaching Inn in the 1830s and in the 1870s onwards accommodated the villages first post office. With the exception of a very brief period in the 1880s, this business has always been run by a female.

Why they chose this property

Herlihy's, offers its guests, the unique opportunity of quite literally "living in and experiencing the atmosphere of a traditional Irish Country Pub. It is decorated with memorabilia collected by Marie's family down through the years, therefore it is akin to living in a pub museum. As a professional archaeologist, with a deep love for Ireland's cultures and traditions, Marie is a font of knowledge for her guests and is always willing to chat. Marie has also worked in the world of genealogy, therefore for an additional fee, she is quite prepared to help you find your "roots".
