Wonderful place. The location is ideal. Walking distance to both the nice little town of Thomas one way down a river path and water falls the other direction. Easy drive to Blackwater Falls and everything else this hiker's paradise has to offer. Would definitely come back here again.
We were in the area for a family event and stayed the weekend. Nice property away from it all. Enjoyed the much needed peace and quiet. Would definitely stay here again.
We had a great stay at Rex's place. It was exactly as described and perfect for our family of 2 adults and 2 small kids (4 and 2). Rex was super responsive to questions.
We took a somewhat spontaneous trip to this house. We've rented in the area many times, but we really loved how comfortable the house was and the location. We took our pups and really, really appreciate the house being dog friendly. We will be back soon. This is our new pick for our trips to this area.
This house is charming, well spaced and comfortable, with all the necessary amenities. If you look for peace and quiet- yet close to all main state parks trails and attractions - this is it. The nearby little towns of Thomas and Davis were a pleasant surprise with so many good cafes, restaurants, farmers market and gift shops. We had a wonderful time and recharged.
Our family of six had a really nice time at the house. We skied one day and sit by the fire and played board games the other. Great kitchen also!
We are going back!
The house was pleasant to stay in. We had a nice fire. The kitchen was well stocked. We enjoyed visiting waterfalls and skiing at Timberline. It was a really good experience.
It was secluded and well appointed. Not fancy, but comfortable and relaxing location. Centrally located to the Memorial weekend Art festival, town of Thomas, Blackwater Falls and town of Davis. If you enjoy the peace and quiet of WV, this is a great place to stay.
Private, close to Blackwater Falls, perfect hiking, several cute towns with great local food and shops - couldn’t experience some of the shops/attractions due to COVID but still very charming.

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness, listing accuracy
Negative: No A/C. and broken ceiling fan in the bedroom.Dead rat and rat droppings in the kitchen area. Every untencil and dish that was used had to be prewashed. No hot tub or jetted tub, although they are listed in the accommodations.Main bathroom showerhead broke the first night, and we had to buy a new one. Smoke detector was laying on the bedroom nightstand and not usable.Positive: location to the town and waterfalls was great!
The property was outstanding. So beautiful. There was an apple tree which was a big hit with the Deer. A very cute town with some shopping and a few places for dinner.
The house was old and needs some updates however very clean and well stocked.
Host was very responsive to all inquiries/very communicative. Great area with lots of paths, activities, and restaurants. Property as described. Upstairs was a little hot, but otherwise Family had a great time. Property as described and recommend.
The property is close to major attractions but away from town. It's the last house on a dead-end street with only one other home. Note: the neighbors have two off-leash labs that came to the property daily. Be mindful if your dog is also off-leash. I was not concerned they would bite or attack, but they barked a lot when out. It was quiet (when neighbor dogs weren't out) and secluded. The place was nicer than the pictures. The kitchen was stocked (just bring cooking oil or butter). I would stay here again if I were visiting. Bring tissues and soap/toiletries.
We stayed here for 2 nights and had a lovely stay. Rex was a pleasure to work with. We enjoyed playing games and CDs. We ate at the Mountain State Brewing Company and the Smokehouse at Blackwater Falls. Would recommend both. We were in the area to do the sled run but would have been content to relax at the house all weekend with the winter storm. It was beautiful.
Always loved this area of West Virginia so we decided to stay one month with our pets, which the owner of the property had no issue with. The house was extremely clean and comfortable. The house was loaded with all kinds of cooking ware and utensils Location was everything to us, easy drives to all the wilderness hiking and mountains, The owner was a great guy, easy to talk too. Ice cream at the Davis Ice Cream parlor, go get it crazy good. This was truly a home we felt extremely comfortable in. Yes we will return.

Good location but house needs some TLC
Very close to trails and we enjoyed adventures right out the front door. House is large and easily accommodated our family of 3 adults. House needs a good cleaning and updating, especially the kitchen. Some of the pots, cookie sheets and glasses were dirty/greasy and the overall place needs some TLC . Bathrooms were clean but had a lot of wear and tear. Lovely views from upstairs windows.
Five of us ladies who have been friends for over 30 years visited Westwood 2/23-2/26 2024. We had a fantastic time! The house was great for our size group and was full of amenities. The kitchen was completely stocked with dishes and cookware along with other items like spices/salt/pepper and things of that nature. The beds were comfy and the wifi worked great. Checking in and out was a breeze and the few questions we had prior to the trip, Rex answered almost instantly. The home was absolutely spotless from top to bottom as well. The only thing that could make it better is a hot tub on the back deck ;). The location is close to everything yet very private and quiet. We had a marvelous time and would absolutely stay here again!
We had a great time at the house! Absolutely loved the wood fireplace and location. The only drawback was the internet was not adequate to do anything on my laptop and barely on my phone. AT&T also barely has service, we had enough in certain areas in the house to get calls out but that was about it. Other than that the house was clean and super comfortable. Love the large yard that we could play with our dog in. The neighbor does have dogs but he made an effort to keep them on his property. All in all, I would definitely go back. The owner was great to work with!

About the host
Hosted by Rex Phares
Michelle and Rex Phares live in Elkins, WV, about a 40 minute drive from Westwood. We've spent many weekends and holidays at Westwood as have many of our friends.
Why they chose this property
It's the location. Close to Thomas with all its artsy and antique shops and the Purple Fiddle. Yet Westwood is all about privacy. It's a great place to explore the Cannan Valley and Thomas/Davis area. There's a lot to do here, world class mountain biking, x-country skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, bird watching. The Blackwater Canyon rails to trail is at the bottom of our driveway. There is the Mountain State Brewing Company, Sirrianis Pizza, Hellbenders Burritos and Stumptown Ales all with a 3 mile drive. If your visiting between March and November, by all means, bring your mountain or road bike. December thru March bring your skis or snowboard. There's always something to do.
What makes this property unique
Just a great place to be in the mountains and enjoy what the area has to offer.
