As the bay is shallow at low tide, 25 square kilometres (10 square miles) of sand is uncovered. This allows opportunities for bathing, swimming and fishing to take place, plus for walkers there are many delightful paths. Red Wharf Bay attracts many birds and waterfowl. From shell duck and purple sandpipers to curlew, dunlin and grey plover, this makes the bay a haven for bird watchers. Less then five miles away is the wonderful historic town of Beaumaris which offers a 13th century castle, shops, pubs, restaurants, museums, a golf course and boat trips.
