About this property
Relaxing & Tranquil, the Ohiwa Gem - a true Kiwi beach bach experience.
A charming, simple Kiwi bach set in a private estuary setting on the edge of Ōhiwa Harbour. This compact 36 sqm retreat offers a peaceful escape year-round—ideal for a cosy winter hideaway or a sun-soaked summer getaway.
Tucked beside the Ohiwa estuary and close to the harbour’s main channel, the location is exceptionally tranquil, with ever-changing tidal views right at your doorstep. Enjoy easy access to fishing, shellfish gathering, kayaking on the harbour, surfing, bush walks, sailing, kite surfing, and even glow worms nearby.
The bach is also conveniently located near Onekawa Te Mawhai Regional Park for scenic walking, and the Waiotahe Beach Trail (part of the Motu Trails) for cycling enthusiasts. Watch birdlife come and go with the tides while you unwind in a truly natural coastal environment.
The bach is a compact, open-plan space with a separate bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen, including a dishwasher. Sleeping is located on a mezzanine level, accessed via a ladder-style staircase The mezzanine includes one double bed and two single beds (one stored underneath the other), and features a low ceiling due to the roof pitch—standing height is limited in some areas (please read special conditions about access).
A spacious wrap-around deck with outdoor seating provides the perfect spot to relax, dine, and take in the peaceful surroundings.
This is not a luxury beach house, but a comfortable and cosy kiwi bach in a stunning natural setting—perfect for those wanting to slow down and recharge.
Special conditions: • One-night stays incur a $40 surcharge. • Smoking permitted outdoors only. • In true Kiwi bach style, guests are expected to bring their own linen, clean before departure and take away all rubbish and recycling. • Please note: The mezzanine bedroom is accessed by a ladder and may not be suitable for those with mobility limitations. It is also not recommended for children under 5 due to fall risk. Guests use the ladder and mezzanine at their own risk.

Accused of smoking inside when we didnt, and charged an extra 100 for a deep clean the place was dirty when we arrived and needs a deep clean, food and rubbish between cushions, dust everywhere, couches dont look like they've been pulled out and cleaned under for years

This property needs to carry a safety warning for prospective guests...The sleeping area is in an attic/mezzanine accessed by a steep ladder over two metres high. The critical issue is at the top: ceiling height on entry is very low so you cannot stand upright when stepping off the ladder. It's not 1.6m as listed, but even that is too low anyway. At the top of the ladder, if you try to straighten up you will hit your head and could lose your footing at height. There is a section in the attic where standing is possible, but you have to crouch to get there from the top of the ladder. At night this becomes significantly more dangerous — if you don't know where the light switches are, trying to climb down while tired or carrying anything is a real fall risk. The listing does reference the sleeping area but the photos don't convey the practical hazard. Guests are being asked to assess a safety risk from images that don't show the potential danger accurately. Not suitable for children. Adults need to be reasonably agile and cautious. I've raised this with Bookabach directly. Consider carefully before booking.

Thank you concern noted and will update the listing to further explain mezzanine access.
It's a great old school batch. It has everything you need as a base of operations. There is nothing to do but enjoy the beach and bush. It was the best break from the rat race.Got to check out the glow worms!
