About this property
Anglers paradise and great family holiday place
The Stone House is a great family holiday house set in the amazing Makarora River valley surrounded by the mountains. The river is just a few minutes walk away for the keen fishermen or for the kids to swim in the summer, and the property has plenty of indoor and outdoor areas to enjoy and keep an eye on the little ones.
Boat launching areas at the lake and the river. Mt Aspiring National Park is just a short drive away with amazing walks including the Blue Pool Track for a gentle stroll or the whole national park for serious trampers. The Haast Pass is just a half hour away and you can do a day trip to the West Coast and Jacksons Bay. Wanaka is a 45 minute drive and the Cadrona ski field another 15 minutes from there for winter sports.
There is a cafe and bar a few minutes drive away in one direction and the tourist centre including bar and cafe, just a few more minutes away in the other direction. (May have seasonal closures in winter so check first)
The house has stone walls which are cool in summer and retain the heat from the big log fire in the winter. This is a family Bach that has been in the family for three generations and is showing a bit of wear but it is being renovated as we can get to it. So if you want to relax and not fuss about using miss matched plates then you will enjoy this place.
There is a deck from the upstairs living space with a view up the Wilkin Valley and a great fire pit in the back yard for sitting around on cooler evenings (fire warnings permitting)
There are spare mattresses if you need to put some of the kids on the floor and room on the grassy section to pitch a tent or two. There is only one bathroom but there is a second outside toilet. Special conditions: Suitable for couples, families with younger and older children, or groups. Pets allowed with prior approval, outside dog kennel.
Rate: $180 for first 2 people, additional adults $20 per night, additional kids free. Higher rates over Christmas and Easter check when booking Minimum stay 2 nights but call us to see if there is a deal available.
Extras: Cleaning NZ$50.00 per stay

Great part of the world for a weekend away if you are not into the city. Warm cozy log burner. Obviously a well-loved bach. We loved it too. Would go again
The bach was a comfortable family bach with everything you could need. The scenery breathtaking with lots of water holes to explore along the river. The owner was easy to communicate with and made sure we knew everything we needed to know about the bach and area.
We recently stayed at this beautiful home for a family weekend get away , was peaceful and beautiful location with a warm house close to all of our weekend activities , was perfect for us and our furry friends
Built of river rocks so a bit different. Great fire with plenty of wood.

Lovely stone cottage ..beautiful setting .. great open fire .. need to take food with you . Good kitchen .. bedding good .. lots of fire wood .. only downstairs bathroom ..
pretty waterfall walks .. tranquility
We loved this location, a few minutes' walk to the wonderful Makarora river braidplain. The house is unique: rustic and a little run down. Comfortable enough if you aren't expecting luxury. Some things could use a little updating (i.e. floors and bath fittings) but all this is secondary to the stunning landscape. We enjoyed our 10 days exploring the area--be sure to check out The Craypot fish and chippie at the end of the road over Haast Pass and the Wilkin Jet Boat tours.
This is a wonderful holiday home with a lot of atmosphere. The house is built with love and one can feel that. We spent 2 weeks there and we loved every minute. The owners are super friendly and helpful, they made us feel at home and very welcome. It was always lovely to chat and they helped us with what to do and where to go and how to catch that big trout.
The house itself is beautifully built, close to the river, but also close to shops and everything else you need.
We loved it so much we're thinking of going again.
Thanks for everything.
The house is a unique stone bach with all of the necessary essentials for a great stay. Great location in the country with amenities around and 40 min access to Wanaka area.
Comfortable accommodation with outside areas and nice walks near the property. Extras like games, DVD, extra blankets, toys for kids (we didnt need them but they were there), games and other things to pass the time. The kitchen had all of the required items including lots of cooking and serving options... well suited for family dinners.
Autumn is the perfect time to stay, a log burner and interior stone wall cottage what more can one wanter the ambient fell. We had a relaxing time soaking up the rural life, a short drive to the blue pools and Haast further up the road for some coastal fishing. Mount Shrimpton walk a couple of kms up the road, due to time unfortunately didn't get to walk the whole track but definitely worthwhile to add to your itinerary if you like a bit of a climb. Beautiful lake access to Lake Hawea 15minutes up the road and lovely to be away from the rat race of Wanaka. Dog friendly and the host dogs had plenty of play time with ours. For some good earthy time out a magic spot.
Good staying experience except very noisy water system
This bach provided great facilities:
great beds, electric blankets, great kitchen setting, good shower, close to Makarora.
The only downside: If you are a light sleeper like one of us, you might not get much sleep. My partner she didn’t get much over three days staying as the water system kept making insane noise throughout the nights.
If this issue can be solved in the future, we would definitely go back as such a beautiful area to travel.
We stayed in a 3-bedroom stone house, which was advertised as a 4-bedroom stone house. This was really the only thing that made our stay disappointing as the "4th bedroom" was not a bedroom at all, just a games area which led into a bedroom, which gave no privacy for whoever was to sleep in the room. One of the electric blankets had exposed wires, so that was a slight concern. We hope this gets fixed. We couldn't get the tv working after following the instructions, as sateltite errtors came up.Other than this, things were as expected - a peaceful area, a comfortable house, once the fire had been going for sometime. The host did have the fire set when we arrived, but sadly she had attempted to light it, but it had not lit. Once we had it going for a couple of hours the house was comfortable.Overall we were ok with the stay, but had it been advertised as 3 bedrooms (which it was) rather than 4 bedrooms, then we would have been less disappointed. It was advertised as sleeping 10, but there was only a couch and two chairs (seats for 5) besides the wooden dining chairs.Very misleading with the online advertisement.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that the description of 4 bedrooms was misleading and have amended that to 3 bedrooms and another sleeping space.
All cables and plugs have been checked and replaced or repaired as needed. The satellite tv receiver had gone out of date without us realising it and has now been replaced with the new model.
We had a lovely 4 night stay in Makarora at the Stone House. This is a great, out of the way location if you are looking for peace and quiet.
The rural and rustic setting was just what we were looking for.
We did have a few hiccups with the property and surrounding area.
The house was incredibly cold when we first arrived (we could see our breath in the house) and the pellet fire would not turn on at the wall, so we had to quickly build a fire in the fireplace, which took a while to warm the house. There was ample firewood to keep the house warm, which was needed, as we had to keep the fire going the whole time we were there, including getting up during the night to stoke the fire.
This was a minor issue as it was cold out and we were prepared for it to be.
Also the cafe and shop in town nearby were closed fully for the season, so bring what you need otherwise you’ll be making a trek. Again not a huge deal for us as we had what we needed.
The bridge to the Blue Pools is currently closed as it’s reached the end of its lifespan and not sure when it will be replaced or fixed, sadly we weren’t able to see them.
The beds were all phenomenal and cozy. The electric blankets were much appreciated! And the toilet in the laundry room has one of the best views that I’ve ever witnessed whilst taking a dump.
We would definitely stay again!

We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful stone house. It was perfect for the kids, lots of toys and games to entertain them and a nice peaceful spot. Lots of room for everyone even our dog was welcome. We will definitely return!
A great, memorable stay. The location is amazing. Could see the milky way at night, surrounded by snow capped mountains on both sides of the valley. Wow.
