Originally established in the 1860s during the Central Otago gold rush, Arrowtown was once a bustling mining settlement. Today, it offers visitors a charming blend of history and modern tourism, with cobblestone streets, heritage cottages, boutique shops, cafes, and museums. The Lakes District Museum provides a deep dive into the area's history, including the lives of early European settlers and Chinese miners, whose restored settlement is a popular attraction.
Arrowtown is also known for its stunning natural beauty, especially in autumn when the tree-lined streets blaze with vibrant red and gold foliage. It serves as a gateway to outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and golfing, and is a peaceful retreat compared to the more bustling Queenstown nearby.
