About this property

Stunning Home in Uptown Detroit - Sleeps 6, close to everything!

Recently remodeled, professionally designed ground floor apartment in an uptown Colonial. Two minutes to the Detroit Golf Club, blocks to University of Detroit Mercy and under ten minutes to downtown.
Distances to all the things:
Ford Field - 10 minutes
Fisher Theater - 5 minutes
Detroit Golf Club - 5 minutes
Riverfront - 9 minutes
Belle Isle - 12 minutes
A two-minute drive to Avenue of Fashion and Woodward, where you can hang in the newly renovated cafes or go up to Ferndale and Royal Oak with their pretty downtowns and a ton of food and shopping options.

Our home is in the heart of a Detroit neighborhood that's just beginning to see some reinvestment. But we love this street. And our neighbors. This is working class, lived-in, old street. And this is an old (1925 built, to be exact) home.

Our home is one of those glorious old-era brick by brick put together structures. While remodeled from top to bottom, the original details we could preserve are all still there: from the intricate, beautiful tile work around the fire place to original (refinished by hand) hardwood floors, to the soaring ceilings boasting original plaster detailing. But with age, you'll inevitably hear some creaking. Our floors slope a bit in places. Our walls are mostly still plaster, and so you won't get the picture-perfect straight lines where the joints meet. We find all these imperfections endearing, but your mileage may vary.

We invested countless hours to turn this old beauty into an oasis of comfort and style, employing one of the most talented interior designers to bring our ideas to life. You won't see much Detroit-centric decor in our home. We wanted to create something that was welcoming no matter where you dwell or come from, and we felt that you came to Detroit for a reason, whatever it might be. And if you are traveling as a tourist to see our city - there are plenty of fantastic ways for you to find every bit of authentic Detroit that you crave. Our home, however, is a place of respite from those days of sight-seeing. Or work. Or visiting family.

And so what we created is just that: a comfortable place to rest your head. Every single mattress is 12 inch memory foam or hybrid, covered by luxurious bamboo sheets and down alternative blankets.

Our living room space is wide open and flooded with light. The dining room table comfortably sits 8 people, and we provide flatware and dishes (that match) for a group of 8.

The kitchen is fully stocked with every size pan and pot you'll need, along with a full set of knives, kitchen utensils, all the spices we thought you'd need, cooking oils & more.

And if we'd forgotten something, we live in the unit upstairs and if we have what you're missing, we'll gladly give it to you.

We want every single guest to feel comfortable. Whatever you may have heard about Detroit - to us, old New Yorkers, it applies to any large city. More so to a city that's been going through an economic downturn for decades, as Detroit has. With that said, our place might not be right for everybody. If you require a very quiet neighborhood where all the homes around you look well maintained, the streets are clean and the traffic slow - this isn't the right place. There are areas just outside Detroit that might be better.

Our home is on an active street - which is what makes it so easy to get around. We are a block from the entrance to John C Lodge Freeway - a main road that bisects the city and will take you downtown Detroit in under 10 minutes or downtown Ferndale or Road Oak in under 8. U of D Mercy campus is under five minutes away. So is the Detroit Golf Club. So we are central and convenient to everything. And yes. We are urban. With that comes noise, and some homes that have peeling paint, and a few barking dogs here and there. But most of our neighbors live here on our street, and some were born here. Most everyone you'll meet, if you choose to, is a fantastic and friendly human you just don't know yet. And our home has multiple secure access points (gated porch entrance, smart locks on doors), a monitored security system, and the owners living upstairs, comfortably, with our one wonderful dog.

Like in any big city, we'd simply say that no matter where in Detroit you choose to stay, be aware of your surroundings, and take normal precautions you would anywhere else. Lock your car doors. Don't go for a jog at 3 in the morning in a new to you area. Basic stuff.

If all of the above appeals to you, send us a message with "Detroit Blue House sounds lovely" and your reasons for traveling to the D, and your chances of getting approved will be a lot higher. It'll let us know you've read ALL of the above. And we'd feel better renting to you knowing that.

Thank you for considering our property.

About the host

We're Jon & Inna - recently empty nesters who desperately needed to get out of the South (which we had moved to for family reasons years prior, and it just wasn't ever our cup of tea). We were missing New York, or that city vibe in general, but alas, the New York of our youth was irrevocably gone. It was also prohibitively pricey. And oddly stuffy.

We wanted to be in a place that honored its history, its soul, but that also had the energy of rebirth, that youthful optimism about it. And we wanted a place where a roof over our heads wouldn't render us incapable of having some kind of a life. Detroit just seemed to fit, though neither of us had ever been there before.

We planned a trip in February of 2020, and by the end of the ten days we spent here, we had made an offer on our Blue House. The rest, as they say, is history. One we're still writing.

Why they chose this property

The windows got us. All that light flooding into the rooms. And then we walked in, and though the place needed work, it had that sparkle of a well-loved, well-lived in place. We could see the families that came before us cozied up next to the fireplace, sharing stories on those gray, gloomy winter nights, when the sun sets far too early in these parts. Kids sneaking in extra Christmas cookies. The smells of cloves and hot cocoa. We could just picture it, as it was, and then we could imagine it being ours. Renewed, younger but still glorious. And mostly, welcoming.

We felt a strange affinity for this home from that first moment. An affection one feels for certain pieces of art. Or a stray doggie that you just know in your heart, in your very bones is destined to become yours.

And so we did what came naturally. We named her. And made her ours.

What makes this property unique

Lots of natural light. Yes, we're dwelling on all this light - but it just feels great being in the space that's so sun-filled and warm and comfortable, even on those gray winter mornings.

Lots and lots of space. You'll never feel cramped here.

Original details - they just don't make them like that anymore.

Convenient open pantry shelves to store all your stuff in the kitchen. And a kitchen island to make it even easier for you to make any kind of a meal.
