Unique History & Pet Policy

This beautiful and interesting property was once a church camp and sanctuary. Before its rebuild, the home had 13 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, which gives the space a truly unique character and a sense of community spirit.

The property was purchased with a dream to one day become a large breed dog rescue. During the summer months, the second unit is occupied by me and my dogs. For this reason, travelers who wish to bring pets must obtain approval prior to booking. If you have pets, I also have other pet-friendly properties in the area and can happily share those listings.

Farm Life Charm

You’ll also get to enjoy the company of our hobby farm pets: a rooster, several chickens, 2 guard geese. The chickens produce fresh eggs—just ask, and we’ll have some waiting for you in your unit upon arrival!

A great place for home base.

4 adult family members in the area for a wedding. Having 3 great bathrooms with showers made getting ready a breeze. The area is very quiet and peaceful. Susan is an excellent host - even welcoming us with homemade cookies!

Great Place

Great place to stay and was just what we needed. Would highly recommend this place over a hotel and seeing how there is only 1 hotel in Cambridge. Susan was great with communication and the place was very well stocked with what we needed and very clean.

Susan was fantastic! Her home and surroundings were amazing. Went for a walk every day. The goats and chickens and dogs were a huge bonus!! Lots of Christmas shopping checked off the list too!!

Country oasis!

6 of us spent the weekend for our son’s wedding, would love to come back without an event to attend! It is spacious with plenty of room (and bathrooms!!) . The property is so quiet and peaceful. Aside from issues with the code on arrival everything was perfect, and Susan was so kind and responsive to all our questions. Highly recommend!!

Hi, my name is Susan. I was born and raised here in MN, from a family of 9. In 1992, I moved out west for work but visited MN often as possible given that 100% of my family resides here. My son, now 34, moved back here about 10 years ago to raise his family. Coincidentally, right before the pandemic hit, I decided to buy The Rum River Retreat here in MN to live out my retirement dreams and enjoy the summer and fall months with my two grandsons.

Why they chose this property

As a true animal lover....My childhood dream was to earn enough money one day to purchase a property with acreage that would be large enough to open a dog rescue so that I could open a dog rescue. So, when I happened upon this property, I was amazed that that it was everything I hoped for. My goal as it relates to my vacation rental is to raise the money I will need to make it a spectacular playground for dogs. I intend to build fencing, a heated and cooled kennel building, turn my pole barn into a training facility and then my land into a large park setting for my dog guests to run and play until a suitable forever home can be determined for them. I retire in 5 years so I have a lot of hosting to do until then!

What makes this property unique

My guests to date have commented how peaceful and relaxed they felt during their stay here, so much so that many are planning future visits back here. Others have asked if I would rent out the property for them to have events such as weddings and family reunions. I feel so blessed to have found this place and the opportunity to use it to help me fulfill my future dream to open Shaggy Acres Dog Camp. I really hope that you enjoy your time here during your stay in MN.
