About this property

Fish the "Little J" / Cozy Cottage convenient to Juniata College & Penn State

Step back in time, and enjoy a stay at our century-old family cottage, just minutes on foot to the Little Juniata River.

No "traditional" internet or broadcast TV -- so our home is ideal for guests who prefer to "unplug" from media distractions. Although...

Adequate WiFi service via the guest's own cellular data when tethered to a laptop or tablet has been reported by multiple recent guests, sufficient for remote network access and video streaming. (Experience may vary, however, according to the guest's cellular network. We will assist our guests in getting connected upon request.)

The cottage features a cozy living room with a CD/DVD player and flat screen TV. A wide selection of DVD films is available, or bring your own. Connection to video streaming services via cellular data with an HDMI cable connection is also possible.

Recent guests have reported good cellular service with Verizon and AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. AND as of October 16. 2023 a new signal amplifier is active that boosts cell reception with quite satisfactory results!

The "Little J" -- well known to fly fishers far and wide -- is one of Pennsylvania's best trout streams and popular with kayakers and river tubers as well; we are just a mile down-river from the village of Barree.

Built in 1902 on a wooded acre by 2nd and 3rd generation descendants of late 18th Century settlers of northern Huntingdon County, the home has been carefully maintained and fully modernized -- serving both as a seasonal and a long-term residence over the last 120 years. Expanded periodically since first built, the home retains many of its original architectural features together with some period furnishings.

Take your morning coffee on our all-seasons porch (screened in warm weather, enclosed with thermal widows in cold weather). Hike up the road into the Rothrock State Forest lands. Hike the Mid-state Trail from a nearby trail head with adequate parking.

The cottage comprises about 975 sq ft (90 sq m) and can accommodate 4 guests comfortably.

The kitchen is equipped with dish soap, dish cloths and dish towels, pots and pans, cooking utensils, toaster, toaster oven with broiler, microwave oven, plates, cups, coffee pots (French Press and Italian Stove Top Espresso), glasses, and flatware. The kitchen seats up to 4 persons, with a 1920s-era Hoosier cupboard and a professionally-restored, 1950s-era gas range, ready for stove-top cooking.

IF YOU PLAN TO ROAST, BAKE, OR REHEAT, ask us to set the oven's standing pilot for you prior to arrival. (Note that this model range did not include a broiler.)

The two bedrooms are in the half-story loft: one with a queen bed and the other with two twin beds.

While many of our guests prefer to bring their own BED and BATH linens, we can furnish these at the guest's request for a one-time $30 fee to cover our linen laundry costs and make up the beds for you. We furnish bed pillows. comforters and light blankets.

You can draw the privacy curtain between the rooms if needed.

The house has modular and window air conditioning units installed in hot and humid weather.

The full bath has a tub with shower.

Our cottage is clean but not fussy: a kick-off-your-shoes, settle-in-with-a-good-book-or-good-conversation kind of place.

We are about 50 minutes from Penn State University and about 20 minutes from Juniata College.

Convenience stores and gas stations (10 minutes to Petersburg or to Alexandria) and supermarkets (20 minutes to Huntingdon) are within convenient driving distances. Several local eateries are close by for eat-in or take-out, and some for delivery.

My grandson and i went to the little J area to experience world class flyfishing, mother nature was againt us. However the streamside historical cabin in itself lead us to enjoy the regions beauty , culture and history. It was a great fit. Everything about our stay was as discribed by previous reviews and our host. We enjoyed our trip immensely Thanks to all. Tom and Kevin

It was a pleasure meeting and hosting you at our cottage, Tom & Kevin. You were model guests. When things needed our attention, you reached out and gave us the opportunity to promptly address the matter. And you then let us know that all was in good order afterwards. We can't ask for any better communication than this. We are ten minutes from the property and always available to our guests 24/7. We look forward to hosting you again soon!

Three gentlemen looking for a nice place to stay while we fished the Little Juniata River. What an absolutely perfect place to stay! The cottage was 100 yards from a really good section of the river for fishing, and the host, Guy, was so courteous and informative, meeting us at the property when we checked in, giving us tips for our stay, explaining nuances of the property to give us the best stay possible. He lives very nearby, and made certain that we understood that he would be responsive to anything that we needed. The cottage is a throwback in time, appointed with lots of historical notes and interesting stories. We were so glad to have a place so close to our fishing, and we cooked breakfast and dinner each day. The entire cottage was clean, lots of hot water, well supplied with kitchen dishes and cookware. We will definitely return for another fishing trip next year.

We make it a point to personally greet our guests whenever possible and to be available to them 24/7 for any needs that might arise during their stay. Our cottage is a third-generation legacy home that we love to share with family, friends and out-of-town guests--preserving it in much the same style as I have known it since the 1950s and continuing our decades-long tradition of hospitality. Thank you for appreciating this property as we do. We look forward to hosting you again soon.

Reflecting on the many years we have been sharing our century-old legacy property, I think our greatest pleasure has been in meeting each new guest in person. We find it only right that, whenever possible, we take the time to briefly introduce ourselves to each new guest--adding a face and a voice to what might just otherwise just be an impersonal commercial transaction. Whether it be for a local family event needing extra housing, a memorable fishing experience on the Little J or a campus event at Penn State or Juniata College, we have so much enjoyed meeting the nicest folks. We look forward to serving you again on your next visit to our region.

Kitchen is small but quaint. It was great for cooking breakfast before we started our day. We had a dinner one night and ate on the 4 seasons porch everyday
Stayed 3 nights in Oct 2025
Response from VrboOwner on 12 October 2025
Yes, Colin... My grandfather was not a man of great means -- lots of struggles just for life's basics; and this home was the crowning achievement of his life in his 40s. He lived there the last 10 years of his life. So there was just enough space in the design for basic life functions--cooking, eating and sleeping. His brother added the small panty sometime before 1920, and in the 1940s my dad created the pine paneled living from from the original two 12x12 bedrooms, adding the second floor in the 1960s. I closed in the front screened porch a few years back to make the 4-seasons porch you enjoyed so much. Thanks for loving enjoying our cottage as we have for so many decades.

Great place, too bad about all the rain
Stayed 7 nights in May 2025
Response from VrboOwner on 26 May 2025
Thanks, Don! Sorry too about the rain, Don... We know you were counting on some good fishing last week. When the river gets high at the last minute, as it did this week, we can sometimes work with VRBO to make a calendar adjustment and reschedule a booking upon request--even last minute. Alternatively, there are a good number of local and regional attractions that can make up for the disappointing weather: --an historic iron furnace in a local state park --the Altoona railroad history museum --an excursion on the East Broad Top steam train --hiking the Lower Trail or up the road into the Rothrock State Forest --or just enjoying the stillness of our cottage, listening to the rain on the roof I know you enjoyed several of these, and we were pleased to help with some ideas; it's what we do. We look forward to hosting you again soon.

We had a great time here, picked this location for the Little J River and fishing. Very accessible to the river! Just a short walk. The house was quaint with a lot of neat history you get to read about. Only downside was the kitchen was pretty tricky so don’t plan on cooking large meals, and it was pretty expensive for what you get. Overall had a great time and will definitely be returning.
Stayed 3 nights in Aug 2025
Response from VrboOwner on 2 September 2025
Thanks, Emily, for trusting us with your young family. We look forward to welcoming you back soon for another fishing adventure on the Little Juniata. Our home is a 3rd generation, 120 year old family legacy property (albeit with some basic modernization--like electricity, plumbing, a/c and central heating). And yet we have deliberately preserved many of the original architectural features in the same state as they existed between the 1920s and 1950s--features that many of our guests tell us they find charming and fun. And so, yes, we acknowledge that kitchens of that era were not nearly as efficient to work in as we might be used to in 2025, and we can certainly appreciate that not every guest will be charmed by the opportunity we offer them to "step back in time", Your observations are still of high value to us, nonetheless. Thank you! Thank you, as well, for your observations on cost/value. This is helpful to us, given that our nightly rates currently vary semi-automatically by the season and in relationship to similar properties and regional market demand. (Mid week stays tend lower. Weekends and *especially holiday weekends* tend higher.) We suspect that you may well find our off-season, non-holiday and non-weekend rates a better value for your budget, as your travel schedules permit.

The cottage is very nice and clean. It is a throwback to mid 1900s! I loved everything about it. Its like living history with all the decor and the pictures with all the history attached. It is secluded but near alot of things like restaurants and small towns. I came for the fishing and was very successful and the cottage is 2 min walk to the river… highly recommend!!!
Stayed 2 nights in Oct 2025
Response from VrboOwner on 6 October 2025
Thanks, Douglas. Your description captures precisely what we have set out to achieve with this family legacy property. The cottage is functional, close to (almost on top of) fishing opportunities, and a 1950s era period piece--almost exactly as I remember it as a child when I first stayed there myself with my parents in 1958--although with lots of essential modernization since. I lived in this house as a graduate student in the late 70s, commuting daily to class at University Park. Wrote my dissertation in that living room. Thanks for your booking. We look forward to hosting you again soon.

My husband and I loved the cabin and beautiful area around! Waking up to the sounds of birds and the babbling brook in front of the cabin was divine, and the rich history of the cabin present in pictures and snippets made our visit feel more like coming home than being on a trip. Guy was a fantastic host who communicated wonderfully and even gave us fantastic restaurant recommendations for the area. We will definitely be back to enjoy the cabin again!

It was our pleasure to meet you both and to be your hosts. Our cottage is a legacy home now in the third generation of our family. Built as a very simple family residence in 1902--indeed not much more than a cabin then--it has undergone substantial transformation over the last 123 years--but without detracting from its original character. We are so happy that you found yourselves comfortably at home, and we look forward to hosting you again soon.

We look forward to hosting you again, Dick. And, yes indeed, we have bald eagles nesting now along the Little Juniata! Pretty thrilling to see them and no longer a rare event. Sorry about the high water. I wish we could control that, but there are good fishing options close by when the Little J is raging, and given sufficient notice, we're always open to working with our guests to reschedule a booking for a later available date on our respective calendars.

Why they chose this property

Our home is a 120+ year old family legacy that we love to share with family, friends and responsible guests (both US and internationally).

The location is ideal for fly fishing, tubing and kayaking enthusiasts on one of the best trout streams in Pennsylvania or for just relaxing without major media distractions over a long weekend.

As a "market experiment" in late 2018, we first listed the property under a property management contract with an area realtor with whom we have long done business and whose professional attentiveness on our behalf yielded encouraging results. This afforded us the requisite knowledge and confidence by January 2021 to now manage our guest house ourselves.

Whereas our guests' entire stay can be achieved without any personal contact with us, we enjoy meeting our guests in person (following current CDC guidelines, of course)--always by appointment--either upon arrival or after they have settled in.

What makes this property unique

We are convenient to academic and cultural centers (Juniata College and Penn State University), recreation (Raystown Lake and Rothrock State Forest, Mid State Trail, Lakemont Park), shopping and services (Huntingdon, State College, Altoona), yet secluded and private enough for those who just want to get away and unwind without major media distractions.
