This is a gem. Idyllic, breathtaking scenery..about as close to Mother Nature as you can possibly get while in a house versus back country camping. All we heard the entire stay was insects, birds, deer foraging and an occasional prop plane. I am so refreshed. I already rebooked!

This was our fourth stay (Mar. '24, Jul. '24, Mar. '25, Sept. '25) at 'The Farmhouse' we always enjoy the time to unwind, relax and take in the clean country air. Enjoyed time down at the river, around the camp fire and, of course, the hot tub. Got a relaxing walk in on the Hawksbill Greenway Trail in old town, and lunch at A Taste of Home. Two trips to Castle Vineyard capped off a great relaxing, long holiday weekend.Looking forward to possibly a winter stay in a few months.

We stayed here over the 4th of July and had a wonderful time! The property is very private and quiet. It was nice getting away from the hustle and bustle and enjoying the beautiful scenery. This is a wonderful place to go to get away from it all!

Best of the Shenandoah River and Mountains.

Had another wonderful stay at the farmhouse. You can't beat the scenery, sunsets over the Shenandoah River with the mountains in the backdrop. You can canoe, fish, swim, hike right on the property. Lots beautiful trees and wildlife. Thank you Nina for being a great host and sharing this with our family!

Great location for a quiet getaway, clean, and easily accessible. The only thing we would recommend is having at least one king size bed at this location.

Rustic old house for a quiet get away with a great location

Overall, we had a great stay and would go back! The location is very quiet. It was great with our 2 dogs, as they had space to move inside and out. We went out hiking every morning and this was a great middle of the Skyline Drive location to go to any of the trails. But also all of the other sights and to different towns for restaurants. There is also a grocery store and a Walmart close by in Luray. You can't really see the river from the house in the summer, but the mountain view was gorgeous. And it's pretty to walk the trail down to the river. We saw deer every morning and evening in the fields as well (and twice right outside the door to the grill). Some things to note (and maybe I missed on the description):The rock driveway (which was noted) is long and narrow. The last half has a lump in the middle, and our van was dragging rocks with it, even at 5mph. We did try to ride the edge from then on, but there isn't much of an edge. It was better once there was less weight in the van. If you have a low riding vehicle this may not be the place for you, unless the the lump is fixed. The split units did a pretty good job of cooling the house, during a heatwave. They ask you to keep the temp at 75, which was OK for us. There are no units in the bedroom, so we had to use fans which were provided and keep the door open to blow the air in.The spot down by the river is not private. I assume it was people from the other houses on the driveway that came down to use it.

Lovely getaway

This spot is really lovely. Not too far from the DC area, but far enough that it’s away from the hustle. Easy drive to a Front Royal. We had the best time just sitting on the screened porch, drinking coffee and talking. The kids kicked around their soccer ball in a little grassy area near the driveway. The cabin itself is the perfect size for our family of 5.

Honeymoon get away

Warm feeling of close to small town but close to bigger shopping if needed. Absolute quite and peace. Very clean and old time farm living. The screened back porch in the morning with the view and coffee was heaven. The only thing the place needed was better light bulbs in some of the ceiling fans but that is so minor. A must stay place if you want peace and quite with total seclusion.

Very secluded and quiet

Nina was at the cabin when we arrived, and showed us how to get to the river. The cabin was very clean and cozy, with plenty of space to unpack and settle in. The cabin is easy to find (just follow Star View Lane all the way to the end), and a short drive away from various attractions. Situated about 15min from Luray/25min from Front Royal, we found gorgeous views, lovely sunsets, and lots of places to hike. Our pup especially loved exploring the farm and river, and relaxing on the porch watching critters in the fields.

The perfect getaway.

We have been coming to the farmhouse for 10 years! It is our family's favorite retreat. The sunsets by the river are gorgeous. The wildlife is plentiful. This summer, we barely left the property. From the farmhouse, you can hike, swim, bike, canoe, fish, and most of all relax. The house is clean, roomy and comfortable. Kitchen is well stocked. There is a fire pit by the river for grilling and s'mores! The farmhouse is conveniently located near Luray and there is easy access to tons of outdoor activities as well.

wonderful farmhouse

My family has rented quite a few wonderful properties (and a few duds) over the years. I am pretty particular. This farmhouse is among our favorite rentals of all time. It is secluded but not so much that you feel too isolated. It is clean and cozy with lots of character. This is truly an old farmhouse with all of the character that comes along with an old farmhouse. I truly appreciate the feel of this home and all of the thought which has gone into making it cozy, from the fireplace to the piles of quilts. We enjoyed the river and exploring the property. The river is a bit closer than I expected (you can see it from the house this time of year) and the boys enjoyed fishing. The property owner is very friendly and helpful. We definitely enjoyed this as a winter getaway and would love to return in the summer to play in the river.

Magical as always !!!

3rd year in a row at the Farmhouse , and many more to come , it’s become our family’s oasis to recharge the batteries and reconnect as we are in a very hectic season of life with 2 daughters finishing up high school , starting college , and starting to work and all that comes along with growing up ... Some times we are like ships passing in the night at home but again NOT HERE !!! Something so special about floating the river , morning coffee walks on the property , just sitting in the ri we in chairs , and crawfish hunting with my girls like we did when they were younger , this place is really good for our Souls ! The week we come every summer happens to be my birthday week and this year was awesome , my wife and girls took me on the canaopy tour at the state park and got me my very own GoPro to document it as it’s on my conquer my irrational fear of heights bucket list (next month I’m skydiving so the GoPro will come in very handy) keep in mind a year ago I wouldn’t climb a 6’ step ladder . Enough of my rambling , rent this place , we plan to come back year after year and as our family grows we will rent both places on the property to accommodate grandkids and spouses . Also ... the 1st year we stayed in Starview and it sparked our love of the property and is every bit as great we just love the character and charm of the Farmhouse ! You won’t be disappointed, owners are fantastic, though we’ve never really needed to contact them with the exemption of booking and dates and such . Have fun , thank me later !

Ok but dirty

First, once you turn off the main road to the right, just take your first left and go to the end of the road. We were allowed early access by an hour or so, which was gracious. It was very cold inside , so we lit the fireplace in the L/R because there were no instructions as far as heat otherwise. We did see heaters in each bedroom and figured that out. A couple hours later the owner showed up with a comforter and admonished us for smoking on the porch. Granted, we had the B/R door open that led to the porch so we could charge bluetooth, and we closed that when she mentioned it. We had not thought about it in the wide open space, but ok. The owner went on and on about smoke in her house and that she was going to post no smoking signs all over the porch so no one can smoke there anymore. That should not have been an issue since smoking outside was ok according to the listing. We were all made to feel uncomfortable immediatly. As I walked inside with her she asked me why I had the L/R fireplace on while we were outside. I told her because it was freezing inside. She immediatly turned the fireplace off, told me it was ornamental only and tried to start a heater in the kitchen. That never worked, although she did try to get someone out. I saw her turn the fireplace back on and then off again before she left. I had to sleep in the L/R on the futon and it was really cold. The place is also dirty. The toilet may be clean, because it's up to you to clean it and everything else, but when there is bird**** on the inside of the windows, that's just nasty. Old fake plants with layers of dust, filthy windows and doors, scum on dishes and glasses. Great views of the mountains, can't really see the river, but easy walk. You can make do anywhere, but for the money, I'd rather spend the extra and not be cheaped out.

Moldy Mansion, Sept. 18

Yep...that's what my teenagers named it -- "moldy mansion". It's an old, neglected farmhouse that seems to have been in the owners' family for a while and they have grown accustomed to its...peculiar qualities. That's all we can figure, as to why someone would feel comfortable renting it out without maintaining it. My 16 year old son was quiet as we walked in. After a long pause, he said, "Isn't this how most scary movies begin?" We're very down-to-earth people who can be comfortable in basic accommodations or even camping, but when you walk into a house that is so moldy/mildewy, so full of cobwebs, bugs, and dirt and such dusty old furniture...the place named itself. Every dish we took out of the cabinet had dried food on it. It's as if the previous renters never even rinsed the dishes, much less, washed them. Clearly, no one checked the house before we rented it. The hot tub -- a requirement for a Luray rental-- was not usable. It was murky and smelly. I looked around and found some tablets to put in the tub, but they never cleared up the smell and murkiness. I did discover why the place is full of bugs and mold -- while you're in the basement, which is open to the outdoors, you can look up and see the light of the living room through the floorboards. This place needs a serious renovation. I am sure it is not up to safety codes. The bathroom fixtures and the kitchen fixtures were just gross. Also, they should tell you the actual address and provide clear directions. Everything about this rental experience was horrible. The bright side is that we were all so happy to get home. I feel misled by the previous renters' comments. Maybe they're city dwellers who don't have a nice, quiet neighborhood and are impressed by the quiet. You will have quiet. And there is a large, stone fireplace, but I'm not sure it even works, and we weren't about to take our chances, given the sad state of the place. Do not expect to be near the river, and do not think there will be anything such as a canoe or tubes or anything of that nature. It had recently rained and we walked through a very mucky field. It's a bit of a hike to the river. My coworker asked for a recommendation for Luray, which reminded me I should write a review. Do not rent this place. There are so many other nice places to rent in Luray. Keep looking! I must have been misled by the picture of the rockers on the front porch.
