About this property
Historic Schoolhouse in Rural Vermont Beauty Spot
This is a historic 19th century schoolhouse full of character with original blackboards and maps, but with all the creature comforts, including a brand new fitted kitchen fully equipped for fine dining. The schoolhouse is near to our farm with 250 acres of woods and open pastures which is stunning during the Autumn foliage. The area provides some of the top mountain biking and hiking trails in New England plus fishing, tubing and swimming in the local rivers. Vermont's renowned craft breweries and distilleries are in easy driving distance, as are foodie havens such as Stowe and Waterbury. Remote, restful but connected with our high speed fibre optic internet so also good if working is necessary.

About the host
Hosted by Philip Stoltzfus and Terrie Alafat
Terrie is a born and bred New Englander having grown up on a farm in nearby N.H., and is an avid skier, hiker and maker of blueberry jam. Her husband Philip is a certified flatlander born abroad to a U.S. diplomatic family, who fell in love with Vermont at an early age. They live part of the year in London, England, but increasingly gravitate to the farm and are always there when the schoolhouse has visitors.
Why they chose this property
We bought the adjoining farm 25 years ago to ensure that our London raised children retained a connection with our US based family. Over the years it has proven a place of refuge for ourselves, our children, and our friends, enabling a reconnection with nature and rural ways that are quite remote to busy urban lives. When our neighbours asked us to buy the School House with its particularly deep history in the local community, we jumped at the chance as we saw it as a way of introducing others to this unique part of the world.
What makes this property unique
We were first drawn to the School House because of our desire to preserve an example of that iconic American rural institution, the one-room school house where a teacher taught children from kindergarten to 12th grade. We have kept the old blackboards, pre-WWII roll down maps, sandbox, calendars, and encyclopaedias which recapture that bygone era. The building now has an added bedroom, bathroom, and beautiful fitted kitchen, but the old school room itself is the magic of the place, with its big square space and many windows looking out to the surrounding farms. The area is covered with hardwoods so in Autumn the house is bathed in the spectacular fall colours that bring so many of us to Vermont.
