What a wonderful vacation we had! The kids and adults had the best time. So many activities here to do, the Oggs really thought of everything. The boat was a bonus and you can fish right off the dock as we caught 3 pike.
We had a family vacation and had a great time. Lots of fun activities at the house and the boat was a hit. The first time going through the canal was difficult but then we knew where all the logs were located so it was much easier after. I would recommend this house.
Check in went very well. We were able to get in 30 minutes early. Everything about the house was just as described. We enjoyed fishing off the dock in the canal. We used the pontoon every day of our stay. Our family made a lot of fun memories.
We had an awesome time. The house was clean and well maintained. Being able to use the boat was awesome too. Overall just a great experience and would stay here again!
The entire family enjoyed our stay. Lots to do for all ages. The house was beautiful, and we also had fun on the pontoon boat. I would definetly recommend this house. The host was easy to contact and responded quickly.

Thanks a lot Lisa. My cleaning crew said you left the house spotless and it was the cleanest and nicest anyone has ever left it at check out time! I very much appreciate it as does she. You all are certainly welcome back anytime and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your stay! Hope to hear back from you again next time. Thanks again.

Thank you Ashley! I'm glad to hear we exceeded your expectations. We work very hard to make sure every guest says the same thing. We'd be happy to have you back again sometime.
We had the most wonderful time at this property! Very clean, great communication, friendly neighbors, and everything we needed! We had so much fun on the water, and Randy was very helpful with the boat. There were plenty of activities provided to keep us busy! 10/10 recommend!
Property manager was very easy to talk to and answered all of our questions. We were very very relieved to find baby/kid accommodations like a pack and play and tons of toys. There were plenty of outside games for every age group to play. We loved the property and will definitely be back.

Thank you Erin for the kind words. We too have younger aged children and know how awesome it is to not have to travel with a pack and play or a high chair and things like that. Glad you were able to utilize everything from the yard games to the young children's toys. I'm also happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to having you back again sometime. Thank you!
Great stay at Houghton’s Cove on canal at Houghton Lake. Spacious home, well equipped, and lots of great seating areas. Kids and adults enjoyed the game room. I enjoyed large kitchen. Want to return in the summer to enjoy water toys. Great communications with owner. Highly recommend.

Thank you Lana for the nice review. I’m glad you enjoyed our house and all it had to offer. My wife worked hard and utilizing all the space and different seating areas you mentioned as I’m sure she will be happy to hear you noticed & pointed it out. We’d welcome you and your group back anytime. Hopefully we’ll talk to you again soon. Thanks again!
Been renting VRBO for 9 years. This home by far has been the best yet. Tons of extras like games and kayaks. Best stocked house for blankets, kitchen supplies and so on. Owner was easy to communicate with and everything was in place as promised. Definitely recommend.
We had an amazing time here! We had all ages including small children, teens and adults and there was plenty to keep us busy for 4th of July. We didn’t feel crowded and the extra space in the sunrooms was perfect. The pontoon was a blast as well as the kayaks, canoes and paddle boards made for a fun trip down the canal to Houghton Lake. Thank you so much for hosting this awesome home!

Thank you Stephanie for the review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and want to welcome you and your family back anytime!
I expected to play air hockey at boat on the lake during down time with my daughter, but the weather and our energy levels didn’t cooperate. Still, we were so comfortable and relaxed! Outstandingly appointed kitchen!! Very comfortable beds- I slept great! Natural light, convenient to everything but also private.
We loved the accommodations, and the hosts and manager were very nice. This house was well equipped with everything you would need. The pontoon was very nice and spacious.
The boat ride through the the canal to get to the main lake can be a bit challenging for someone that isn’t a frequent boater.
The driveway is very spacious. The garage is well equipped and has lots of fun stuff.
I highly recommend staying here.
This property exceeded all our expectations. It is easy to get to, in a beautiful location and has absolutely everything anyone could hope for in a vacation rental. It is lacking nothing. They have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. The owner is always available if there are questions and he responds immediately. We cannot say enough about the wonderful week we spent at this beautiful home. We recommend it highly and wouldn’t hesitate to book another vacation here.

Wow Connie, thank you for the great review. I’m glad to hear how much you enjoyed your stay. We do work hard trying to make sure everything we do to the property is with a renters point of view in mind. It’s good to know it doesn’t go unnoticed. We’d be more than happy to have you and your group back anytime. Hope to see you again in the future. Thank you again!
Wonderful, clean house with lots of great amenities! We loved being on a quiet part of the lake with two young children. We utilized the pontoon boat everyday we were there - that was another awesome perk. Communication with Joe, the owner, was easy and everything was well organized. Randy met us at the house shortly after arrival to explain the rules for the pontoon and how to operate it - he even went out of his way to drive my husband to the boat ramp to drop off our fishing boat. Perfect weekend, wish we could have stayed longer!! We will be back.
Was a bit apprehensive about the time of year coming from the CA desert I do not like cold. The house and boat were everything they advertised and very clean.
The weather was perfect and very few bugs/mosquitoes so I was very happy.
Everything you could possibly need was on site and the garage would be a child's dream with all the games and activities there.
Over all the house and boat were awesome (ride out to the lake can be a challenge (we had an extendable 8ft plastic gaff with us) wich made it much easier. The weather and Location was perfect for our needs and the Restuarant just down the street has amazing food. Great time and great place would highly recommend.
This was our second time at this home. Unfortunately this time was disappointing. The best part was the boat. Apart from that the home is not well maintained with old fixtures and old furniture inside - old patio furniture and rusty/dirty grill outside. Leaky kitchen ceiling and kitchen sink. Also ants in the 2 bedrooms. Sadly these conditions made the stay unsatisfactory.

I'm sorry to hear you felt this way about your stay, especially as a returning guest. However, I feel it’s necessary to address a few key points you left out. First, you never reached out to mention any of the issues during your stay, which could have been quickly resolved had I known. Instead, we only learned about these after you left the property in poor condition, with numerous damages, including a bed frame held together with black duct tape and bricks, a patio chair that had been broken through, a damaged front door latch, and a completely broken shower head. None of these were reported during your stay, which is puzzling given the extent of the damage.
Additionally, the entire house smelled strongly of both cigarettes and marijuana, and ashes were found in both sunroom patios—strict violations of our house rules. My cleaning team had to deep clean and air out the home for the next guests. We also had to make emergency repairs, including replacing the bed frame and shower head and hiring a locksmith to fix the front door before the next group checked in.
I’m sorry if you felt the property wasn’t as expected this time, but the condition you left it in tells a different story. I also find it concerning that none of these issues were mentioned until after I filed a damage claim. It’s disappointing that you would resort to a negative review as leverage in response to being held accountable for these damages.
Our properties are consistently well-maintained, as reflected in hundreds of five-star reviews (with some even mentioning how quickly an issue was resolved and how easily I am to reach). I always encourage future guests to read through the other reviews to get a more accurate sense of what we offer. We are always available to address any issues during a stay, but clear communication is key.
We are from California and 1st. time visit Houghton Lake, Michigan for our family reunion. We are so impress with Houghton Cove property that our family stayed at. This property was very clean, quiet and so much games for our grand children to play in the play room. Even though we have 2 days with bad weather, rain and high winds. But we have the last 3 days with very nice weather. We took a pontoon to cruise around the Houghton Lake, took many pictures and stop couple spots to swim.
Make our comments short. We would highly recommend this Houghton Cove property to anyone if you planning to visit Houghton Lake. You will not regret for anything around this property. Our family has so much memories and fun’s during our stay at Houghton Cove. Will be back in next year without a second thoughts….

About the host
Hosted by Manager - Joseph Ogg
My wife Sarah and I have been in the vacation rental business for many years now as I have been a property manager who has managed VRBO & Airbnb properties for several years before we purchased one of our own. We just purchased this property at the end of 2020 because we just love the Houghton Lake area. We have twin toddlers that are 6 y/o later this year and they keep us busy. We grew up together and have been married for 12 years but together for 20+. Growing up in Southeast Michigan just north of Detroit we have been around lakes and the water for all our lives so when the opportunity to get another property on the water presented itself we couldn't help it and jumped right in and so far so good. We look forward to hosting other families that can enjoy the lake and boating in our new pontoon boat just as much as we have and will in the future. This property can hold medium to larger size groups and family gatherings are perfect for this property as we have already begun to make memories here as well.
Why they chose this property
We used to spend a lot of time on Houghton Lake in our younger days staying with friends and family before we had the twins. As soon as the opportunity presented itself to move up on the lake ourselves and add another vacation rental property we couldn't help ourselves. We love this area as it feels a lot like up north but also has the city/downtown feel just a few miles away. Did I mention the lake? Because that is another main reason for coming back to Houghton and that's that we LOVE Houghton Lake!!! How could you not?
What makes this property unique
One of the nice things about our place is its just far enough up the canal to be away from the wind and choppy weather but still close enough to see the sunset. If you love boating and being out on the water this is where you'll want to be as we just purchased a brand new 2021 Sweetwater 2286 SBX this winter and cant wait to take it for a spin on open water as well as shared the fun with our renters as well.
