About this property

Cozy Medieval Village House in Domme, Dordogne

Picture yourself waking up in this two-bedroom, two-bath, 14th century house! Domme, a wonderful medieval bastide town in Southwest France, holds the honor of being voted one of France's most beautiful villages. Ideally situated on a quiet street, this charming stone house--'La Belle Petite Maison'--and streetscape appeared on the cover of Travel + Leisure magazine in 2003 for a cover story entitled “The Heart of French Country.” The house has been furnished using a mixture of both antique and new French oak furniture.

Dine in the kitchen at the large table or enjoy outdoor dining just out the glass door which opens onto the very private garden patio. In the second floor salon, a glass door leads to a lovely balcony with table and chairs, providing a stunning view of the ancient Delbos gate, and the hills to the South. The balcony makes a lovely spot to relax and enjoy coffee, tea, or an apero.

Given the location of the house within Domme, visitors can easily walk to the tourism office, the cave, gardens, wonderful restaurants and shops—as well as enjoy the village market on Thursday mornings! Fresh croissants for breakfast are only a few steps away. Stroll along the esplanade in the evening to watch the sun set over the valley below or walk the ancient ramparts around the village.

Domme provides an ideal location to visit the Dordogne’s many places of interest such as the numerous chateaux, prehistoric caves, spectacular gardens, museums, churches, villages and artisan’s studios--all an easy day-trip away!

Lovely place to stay

The property was very nice. The location was excellent, everything was within walking distance. The only negatives were: directions could have more clear as to the location of the fire station and recycling.

Magnificent facility and location to explare Dordogne Valley

We were two couples who spent a week here. The facility is charming, well furnished and perfect for us Being right in the middle of the bastide town we were able thoroughly enjoy just walking around the town at different times of the day (especially enjoyable were the evenings after all the day tourists had left). We had several meals on the patio. The town is ideally located to explore the Dordogne Valley from Bergerac to all points east. What was especially appreciated and most impressive was the property manager's instant response to making a small but important repair in the bathroom. We have nothing but wonderful memories. We laughed a lot, drank and ate a lot, and thoroughly absorbed the Dordogne Valley from this wonderful house. Two couples could not ask for a better place.

So thrilled you enjoyed the house and all the delights Domme has to offer! And happy to hear our manager was able to fix the little problem in the bathroom right away. There should be no worries on vacation! Please come again!

Fantastic Retreat

Our family of four stayed here for five nights and had a memorable time. The house is very peaceful, well appointed and yet close to the lower square. We loved the kitchen and 1st floor family room. One of our daughters slept on the day bed the entire stay and was more than fine. Domme was the perfect location to stay - central to the Dordogne attractions, good restaurants in the village, Thursday market was excellent. Two items to keep in mind - parking in the square and on the streets is very difficult between 9am-8pm but after that, no problem to find a spot steps away from the house. Second, the door lock is tricky at first so be sure to get instructions from the management. The owners and local management are very helpful and a pleasure to work with.
Response from VrboOwner on 1 April 2020
We are so glad you enjoyed the house and Domme. Our normally brilliant brother-in-law has trouble with the lock--he forgets to turn the handle in the correct direction, but we will have our manager check to be sure the lock is working properly. On the parking side, July and August are the busiest tourism months in the Dordogne so all is crowded. Fortunately, as you note, most leave Domme in the evening! Other times of year, parking is easy.

Domme House

The house was an interesting home with a lot of character - a very traditional village home. The location was good - close to municipal parking and many of the village amenities. It was also a good base for exploring the Dordogone Valley. There were several English language books on French cooking and the regional wineries that were very helpful. Two suggestions are to include more information on the history of the house and to upgrade the furniture on the patio off the kitchen. Overall - a wonderful visit.

Lovely location. Property sub standard

We were disappointed with the property. We felt that the outdoor furnishings were cheap and outdated - a green plastic table and chairs and torn umbrella in the courtyard , and dead plants, for example. A lot could be done quite easily to make it a more pleasant stay. The lack of air conditioning in the top bedroom made it unbearable to sleep in (to use the fan the main light had to be left on). Cleanliness in the house was below standard. The bedrooms were covered in dust, outside bin was left full of rubbish. The kitchen shelves had obviously not been cleaned for a long time and the rugs not shaken out since before the pandemic. I would advise not to look under the beds! There was no Wi-Fi for the first 5 days of the holiday and we had to call the letting agent several times which impacted on our relaxation time. Great location but sub-standard accommodation which could be sorted with a little care.

Great house, great stay!

La Belle Petite Maison is a charming house in a pretty perfect location! My husband and I have been to Domme several times, but this was our first stay in this house. We will go back! The house is just as described, only better. We were surprised at the size - it's not so petite! It's very comfortably furnished and pretty, with everything you could need - including full size washer and dryer, and WIFI! (Not every place has that). The house also has a wonderful feeling of privacy, with a locking courtyard gate. We were there in the middle of July, and were a bit worried about parking, but the local management lady, Melanie, showed us her "secret" parking spots. So not a problem. This house gets a total thumbs up from us!

La Belle Petite Maison

A lovely cottage, perfect for two couples, although we were only one. The kitchen has everything you need to cook up a storm and all the rooms are nicely furnished and comfortable. Lovely to sit on the terrace at the end of the day and watch the hot-air balloons rise over the valley. Domme is a perfect bastide village with several good restaurants and bars. It has a small grocery store with the basics, but Cenac at the foot of the hill has a Carrefour with everything you need. Great spot for checking out all that the region has to offer. We would definitely recommend it. The only (minor) drawback was that there were no English-speaking channels on the TV. However, there was a good supply of DVDs and, after all, we didn't go there to watch TV.
Response from VrboOwner on 1 April 2020
Thanks so much Jo. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Sorry about the French only TV channels--we use them to practice our French! Glad you enjoyed the DVDs. We hope you accessed any local or world news in English via the internet using the house Wifi.

Fantastic house, near everything in a lovely village. We just loved everything, the house vas very clean, with really nice furniture and beautiful view. Everything was perfect, bedrooms are really nice. It's surely one of the best house to rent in Dordogne Thank you M. et Mrs Madsen to let us use your beautiful house in Domme

CHARMING AND COMFORTABLE

We loved the Petite Maison of Domme. It was an excellent base of operations and suited our needs to a T. We wished we could have shared the experience as the house easily accomodates more than 2 but we felt so comfortable and enjoyed the evening birds wheb we had drinks on the deck and the beautiful colors of the tiled and slate roofs that surrounded us. We would go back in a minute. The town patisserie was very serviceable and everyone we met was pleasant. IT was not crowded which we really appreciated. We could see that in summer months it could be a different experience. Parking our rental was simple on the side streets and the restaurants that we visited were quite nice and very charming. I am hesitant to recommend it because I don't want to give it up! THe rental company was very helpful whenever we called. The services- internet, electricity, water, dishwasher, washer all worked well. There were many stairs, some without railings, not a problem for us. The top floor bedroom does not have a close restroom, again, not a problem for us but something to consider. We loved Domme, the area, the quiet, the beauty, the food, the foie gras, the ....

Thank you for your kind review! One of the things we like most about Domme is its convenient to so many different sight-seeing and activity opportunities. Any high summer visitors should ask our property manager about her "secret" parking places. We are both in our mid-60s and have no problem with any of the stairs, but have warned a shakey relative and some 80-year-olds before they made any decisions to stay! We enjoy sleeping in the top floor bedroom as it is such a cozy aerie and the views of the stars from the windows at night (if you get up to visit the restroom downstairs) are truly spectacular. It is so clear and without light pollution!

Our words can not sufficiently describe our wonderful experience here in Domme. The house was everything described on the website, and its location was terrific... just a few blocks from the main market place, but on a quiet street. The property was clean and orderly, with all of the convenience of a thoughtful layout. We would definately return to this property on our next stay in Domme. Thanks to the owners for keeping such a great property.

Patti and Les, delighted to hear that you enjoyed the house and Domme. We've always loved that the house is wihin the village walls and one can walk to restaurants in the evening, drink wine, and still walk safely home. Healthier, too! We would welcome your return. Bonne journee et merci beaucoup!

Domme in the Dordogne

Our visit to the Dordogne this past May (2010) was our first to this part of France. This property was everything it was promised to be... and more. The unit was very clean upon our arrival and the village offered everything you'd want to experience in the Dordogne region. It's central location was very convenint for hitting many of the local markets, one of our favorite activites in France. The market in Domme itself, of course, was very convenient, but the other markets we visited in Cenac and, especially, Sarlat also did not disappoint. You will need a car to get around the Dordogne from Domme but with that flexibility, you can visit any number of the numerous nearby cave sites, canoe the Dordogne River (a must !) and even sample some of the inexpensive (but way under publicized) great wines of the Bergerac wine district. We also enjoyed hiking to any one of the dozens of castles along the Dordogne that are within easy driving distance (Beynac, La Roque and Castelnaud). And finally, our days were capped each night with a walk up to the ramparts with bottle of wine in hand to watch spectacular sunsets over the Dordogne River valley. These sunsets even rival the ones we have here in our home in Colorado ! If you truly want to know what the Dordogne region is all about, Domme will NOT disappoint !

Dordogne in the Fall

This lovely house is a tastefully decorated tri-level that is well represented in the pictures plus it has a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable couches to sink into after a full day excursion. Domme is a small, centrally located bastide that is unique to itself with many shops, a cave, central square and several restaurants within its hilly terrain as well as beautiful views of the valleys below. Day trip adventures are easily accomodated in all directions to nearby open markets, pre-historic caves, several medieval castles overlooking the Dordogne, quaint and unique hilltop villages, grottos, through beautiful rolling hills with dramatic river views and picnic spots, and a large selection of restaurants (La Belle Etoile in La Roque Gageac beside the river, and Hotel Belvedere in Rocamodour at sunset). The Office of Tourism in Domme was also very helpful and friendly and suggested several visits off the main tourist maps (Coremonte, Museum of Man, Monpazier). Don't miss taking a gelato stroll in the park at the top of Domme under the chestnut trees at sunset.

I just wanted to tell you...

I just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed the house in Domme. It was more lovely than I expected and all too short. Much as I tried not to do too much, we did do a lot. How could we not visit the Lascaux caves or canoe up the Dordogne (an interesting experience in family relationships). Our last night was at L'Esplanade restaurant, overlooking a beautiful sunset. My husband had the truffle menu and thought he was in heaven. I enjoyed going to Mass in French. Oh, and we attended a very nice evening of classical music in the church. --H.M.

About the host

Hosted by Stephany Madsen

Host profile image
Domme is a lovely village for strolling almost any time of day or evening. Lovely gardens, charming old homes, delicious restaurants, and special shops all beckon. Buzz and his wife Stephany have never tired of walking the streets and lanes of Domme in nearly 20 years!

Why they chose this property

In May of 2005, my husband and I finally returned to Europe after an absence of nearly 20 years. Neither of us would have imagined 20 years ago that our return would be to Southwest France—we would have been certain that it would be to Cornwall or Denmark (both homes of our ancestors). In the fall of 2004, we received a travel brochure from one of the universities I attended which invited me to join a tour of village life in France. I was stunned by the beauty of the photos. I was compelled. I was also sure that we did not want to be loaded on to buses morning and evening to be trotted about the countryside. But I was sure that we must see Southwest France, the Dordogne, Perigord Noir—all quite unfamiliar to us.

With an adventurous spirit and the Internet at our fingertips, we booked ourselves nearly three weeks in France, ending in Paris, of course! But we spent two weeks in Sarlat-la-Caneda near Domme. Each day was more awesome and beautiful than the last. It took our breath away. The history! The food! The French people! The wine! The extraordinary natural beauty…. The place had utterly captured us. We returned to France in the fall and found this lovely village house!

What makes this property unique

Great local restaurants and shops within walking distance of the house (the entire village is in walking distance). Excellent wine recommendations from the local merchants. Fresh bread, elegant pastries and croissants every day. (Please say 'bonjour' or 'bonsoir' when you enter any village--or any French--business!) Enjoy the local market in the Place de la Halle on Thursdays, plus large markets in Sarlat (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and St. Cyprien on Sunday morning. Fresh fish at the market in Cenac on Tuesday mornings! My husband says the oysters are the best in the world. Canoe or kayak on the Dordogne. Tour gardens and castles. Indulge in a wonderful selection of places to visit and things to do within easy day trips from Domme. Relax on the terrace at sunset with a fine glass of local wine!
