About this property

Step back in time at Clarence's Place retreat, our little farm in the woods.

We invite you to stay at our little farm in the woods. It is a quiet and serene setting in the town of Aurora, Florence County, a very rural area in northern Wisconsin. We have over 100 acres, which you are welcome to explore. In the winter, we have sleds and sledding hills; there are always a couple sets of snowshoes available for your use. Weather permitting, you will be our guests on a complimentary horse drawn sleigh or wagon ride, which winds down through the fields and virgin timber forrest. There is a fire pit in the woods, which is a stop on our winter rides. We also have a fire pit near the house which is available for your use during seasons when burning is permitted. Our working farm is adjacent to Clarence's Place and you are welcome to observe and/or participate in activities which are going on there, so pack your "play clothes" if that is of interest to you. We make maple syrup in the early spring (guests receive a complimentary bottle); calves arrive a little later in the spring. We have cows, horses, mules and a donkey named Clover. There is a pond where the little "peeps" (frogs) can be heard singing. Wildlife is common here and we can always count on deer and turkey sightings. Eagles are not uncommon. From your windows you will see horses grazing in the nearby fields.
In addition to farm activities, we have an abundance of beautiful water falls in the county. There are also many lakes for swimming and fishing.; You can "float" the oxbow on the Pine River, which is about a 10 minute drive from Clarence's Place. Bring your own tube or rentals are available at the landing. The float is free. There is great trout fishing on the area's many wild rivers and streams. In winter, we have nearby downhill ski hills as well as cross country ski trails. We boast of many fine restaurants in the area.
You'll take a step back in time when you walk into the 3 bedroom, one bath home, which we refer to as the "Retreat at Clarence's Place". It is a very peaceful home. Although it has a large TV and WiFi, you may find that you prefer to relax, pick up a book to read or just sit on the porch listening to the birds sing. We are often frustrated when we visit "museum homes" with rope barriers, as we can only look into the rooms. In the Retreat, you may go right in and make yourself comfortable. The house was built in 1920 and is much the same as it was 100 years ago. We encourage you to use and enjoy the antiques which you will find throughout the home. There are furniture, dishes, magazines (some dating back to the late teens of the 20th century), which we think you'll be interested in.
We are sorry, but this home is not suitable for those who have trouble getting around. There are steps to get in and out of the house, as well as a second floor. The tub/shower is an antique clawfoot. The downstairs bedroom has a queen size bed. One bedroom upstairs has a queen and a twin, while the other has two twin beds.
all bedding is furnished, as well as dishes, pots and pans, coffee pot, blender, microwave, tv and wifi. You'll have to wash your dishes in the antique cast iron sink. There is no washer and dryer but a laundromat is available in nearby Kingsford, MI.

Clean, Quiet, Private Throwback with Modern Updates
We enjoyed our stay. The house and property are very well kept. The owners have the house set up to feel like a '40's farmhouse, yet also provide modern conveniences like AC, good internet, shower, comfortable beds, etc. The owners were very friendly and responsive to requests. We enjoyed learning about their life on the farm. Highly recommended.

Like stepping into history but with Oatmeal Cookies!
Imagine the warm and cozy feeling of stepping into your grandmother’s home in 1930. Now imagine the same place but it is immaculately clean, has abundant hot water, soft towels and brand new mattresses. Our party of 6 all remarked this home had incredible attention to detail from the nightlight placement to the treads on the stairs. We were welcomed with freshly baked oatmeal raisin cookie and a jar of maple syrup that was processed on site. Sandy answered every question and provided detailed directions. Bob gave us a tour of the Maple syrup operation. Deer and wild turkeys provided the entertainment from our front row seats on the porch. Thank you so much Sandy and Bob and thank you too to Clarence who lived here as a beloved neighbor for 98 years.

Restful Retreat
Clarence's Place is a peaceful place. It was a place where recharging was easy. Our memories of old were rekindled as we immersed ourselves amongst the pieces of history that are so thoughtfully placed throughout the home. A ride in a 1932 Ford and a carriage ride capped-off a wonderful stay. Thank you, Sandy and Bob!

Step back in time
It was an amazing place and the old antiques in the house were great. But there were modern conveniences like air conditioning and a nice shower in an antique tub. We also enjoyed the wildlife with deer and turkeys in the yard and the horse drawn carriage ride.

We are a couple who are retired from the underground utility construction company we started in 1991. We raise beef cattle on our small farm, which is adjacent to Clarence's Place. We enjoy traveling. We have 4 children, 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. We love to spend time with our grandchildren and have had many great adventures with them.
Bob has had horses all his life and participates in horse pulling contests. He also uses them for hunting in Colorado and sometimes goes pleasure riding at home.
Sandy enjoys cooking, swimming, gardening and doing just about anything that's fun!
We are active members of our church and enjoy spending time with our church family.

Why they chose this property

Clarence was my cousin and dear friend to both Bob and I. He was a bachelor with a unique little farm in the woods across the field from our house. He was a very dear man, loved by everyone who knew him. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 98. We had the privilege to purchase half of his farm. His house is as near to when it was built in the 1920's as you can get. We enjoy working to preserve the farm. We make maple syrup in the spring, give horse drawn sleigh rides in the winter and wagon rides in the fall. We love the serenity of the place and believe others will be blessed by it, too.
