It's the the perfect getaway for a couple, small family, group of 3, or an individual looking to experience the Maine coast in an idyllic setting. The lovely 2-bedroom cottage has beautiful, sweeping views of Machias Bay from expansive windows in the dining room, bedroom and even bathroom. An enclosed porch also has magnificent bay views and is always a wonderful place to relax. The Outdoors: Heron View Cottage is just a short drive from Jasper Beach, with its expansive, half-mile-long cobble beach and surf. There are several hiking trails located in Cutler that are only a 20+ minute drive from the house. The Bold Coast, Boot Cove and Hamilton Cove (among others) trails skirt along the edge of rugged ocean cliffs and scenic vistas. They are “must do” hikes when visiting the Downeast coast area.
Another “must do” while in the area is the Atlantic Puffin boat tours offered by Captain Cates of the Bold Coast Charter Company out of Cutler harbor. These beautiful and rare parrot-like seabirds only frequent a few of the rugged offshore islands along the Maine coast. Your destination of Machias Seal Island, only 9 miles off Cutler, is the largest puffin colony on the Maine coast, with thousands more birds than any other site. But if you want to do this, please book early!
Lobsters and Whales: The cottage is only a short drive to the lobster wharf in Bucks Harbor where you'll have the opportunity to pick out your own fresh lobsters near the pier. You can also hop on a whale-watching cruise departing from Eastport daily. The cottage is only 1 hour from this popular and picturesque whale-watching port.
The famous Machias Wild Blueberry Festival in August! You won't want to miss the Downeast event of the year – the annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival in Machias. This is a fun-filled celebration of the blueberry. The Downeast region produces nearly 85% of the world's blueberries. The residents of the area are proud of that fact and it shows. There’s no lack of exciting events for everyone at this event – a Main Street parade, blueberry farm tours, magic shows, fabulous food, fireworks, crafts and fine art by regional artists, live music and, of course the blueberry pie-eating contest!

We had a wonderful stay at heron view cottage. The cottage is quaint and comfortable and in a great location. We really enjoyed the sun porch - watching the birds and the tides. We even saw seals one morning! Overall a lovely stay.
Amazing location for a quiet vacation with my Aunt. Lot's of history in this area. Visited Eastport, Lubec and Bangor. The Lobster from Mother Shuckers was delicious!!
This lovely cottage served as the centerpiece of our week long vacation. No matter where we went, it was a pleasure to come back to it and just hang out there. We would do it again!
Was everything we had imagined. We both love antiques and older homes, and Heron View didnt disappoint. Ed was easy to comunicate with, and eager to make our stay enjoyable. We loved the experience.

We had a great stay at the Heron View cottage.! We would sit on the porch and deck every morning and evening, it was magical watching the seals splashing and playing, all the shorebirds, lots of herons, a family of bald eagles, and many many more birds! The cottage was beautifully decorated with antiques, we love old houses and antiques, this did not disappoint. The house was well stocked with the necessary provisions. We visited some of the places Ed the host had suggested and had an enjoyable experience at all of them. We definitely would stay here again!
We had a lovely stay at the Heron View cottage. The weather was great. The view from the back deck and most windows was amazing. Our only complaint is the rickety bench facing the tv. We worried it might break. Great place to stay to visit the highlights of this area. We visited Eastport, took a whale sighting trip from Lubec, a coastal cruise from Jonesport and traveled to Campobello Island to visit FDR’s summer home. We would stay here again in if we travel back to Maine.

Hi Alane,
Thank you again for choosing Heron View Cottage, and I am so glad you had a nice stay and enjoyed the beautiful Downeast Coast! I am disappointed that you did not enjoy the sofa in the living room. It is my favorite piece of furniture in the entire house and we (my family and I) always look forward to relaxing on it! (The sofa is definitely is not the way you describe it.) It is exactly as pictured on the listing for the cottage. Take care and wishing you safe travels! Ed
I love this cottage! The placement , the age, the ocean! Everything about it is amazing! If you are looking for a quiet ocean vacation , this is the perfect place! Nothing but ocean, birds, and tides going in and out!! I will be returning many times as I can!
The location of the Heron View Cottage was perfect. Every morning, my husband and I awoke to a beautiful sunrise, and we enjoyed seeing the herons fishing for their breakfast. We spotted several eagles, which we loved. While paddling the kayaks, a seal was very playful and kept following me and popping his head up. We were close to several hiking trails, taking us out to beautiful vistas of the ocean waves spashing against the rocks. It was very welcoming to come back to the coziness of the cottage after exporing for the day. The cottage had everything we needed to cook several of our meals, especially "Lobsta".We had perfect weather all week. We hope to be back. Thank you, Ed, for sharing such a lovely part of Maine!
Weather, birds, herons , egrets magical disappearing birds, sand pipers, cormorants, so manny different kinds of birds!!!! Turkeys goose. Just sat on deck or porch watched the tides and birds!!! It was awesome and amazing! Hope to be able to spen 2-3 weeks next year!!!!!
We absolutely loved this little 200 year old cottage and the whole historical area. It’s off the beaten path but close enough to civilization to get things you really need. It’s a great place to just relax- read a book or two and just sit and watch the tide flow- the birds forage and the breeze cool your day. If you love the outdoors- it’s a great landing spot for day trips to great places to see the beauty of the area. Ed is a great host- available and helpful when or if he’s needed. We enjoyed every minute!!
A cozy place to stay with amazing views of water, hills, and sea birds. In a convenient location near Machias and Machiasport. The cottage is filled with antiques, which makes the place charming and pleasant. However, there is an overabundance of bottles on the windows, so many that they have dried bugs and cobwebs, and opening any window requires the removal of many of these bottles. This is not a big deal, but it may not be to everyone's taste. We enjoyed the back porch as it's the best place to sit and enjoy the the view.

Thanks for your review, Deborah, and I'm so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Heron View Cottage! Still, I'm disappointed that you didn't appreciate the collection of wonderful, small antique bottles on the window sills. All other guests have marveled at them and the atmosphere they bring to the cottage and its spectacular view of the bay. Once again, many thanks for staying at Heron View Cottage!
Unusually hot weather kept us from staying in the cottage. Even with fans going was impossible to stay inside due to the stifling heat. Sleeping was impossible We had to leave after one day of our paid week stay. A disappointment for us. Certainty not the fault of the owner

Hi Emma - I am so sorry that you were at Heron View Cottage for the one day this summer which reached 90 degrees - an ultimate rarity for Machiasport. The day you left and for the next 5 days of your reserved week, the weather was absolutely gorgeous, with comfortable average temperatures for the season. I am so disappointed that you left after one day, as I know you would have totally enjoyed your stay at the cottage for your remaining 5 days.
We loved our stay in Heron View Cottage! The view of the water was amazing and we absolutely loved waking up to the ocean right outside our bedroom window. The cottage definitely reflects classic coastal Maine and Ed provided us with plenty of guides and maps to aid us in our exploring. Ed was very communicative and whenever we needed anything he was ready to help. One thing we’ll warn you about is the bathtub/shower is more just a shower as the tub is old and has paint chipping off the bottom. So if you need a tub this may not be the place for you. However, this town and area is fabulous and definitely worth a stay! We’d recommend checking out all the local shops and chatting up the locals as they’re so kind- Coffee and Crisp was a great breakfast place! Thanks Ed!

Hi Ciel - thanks so much for your kind review and I am so glad that you both had a great stay at Heron View Cottage! I appreciate your comments on the bath tub. However, it is a ball-and-claw foot tub that has been refurbished and is in very good condition. And as noted in two places in the cottage's listing description, it has shower use only. Thanks so much again!!

My husband & I found our week, at this cottage, to be very enjoyable. The view of the bay, from the deck & enclosed back porch, was peaceful & beautiful. Watching the tide go on & out was interesting. We did see an Eagle a few days. The living room furniture is a bit uncomfortable, but the tv & cell phone reception were excellent. The bed was very comfortable. Getting in & out of the claw foot tub was a little tricky (we are both in our mid-60’s) but the water pressure was great. The yard, with roses & lupines was so pretty. The location is convenient to towns. GPS took us directly to the cottage.
We took a couple day trips to go on a Puffin watch tour, with Captain Robertson (Robertson Sea Tours) in Millbridge & then to Lubec to visit that town & to go to the Quoddy Head State Park, where we enjoyed a nice hike on the coastline & saw the lighthouse. We highly recommend both ventures.
Ed was very easy to rent from. He responded quickly to text messages.
We would definitely rent this cottage again & hope to do so.
We very much enjoyed our stay at the house. The view over the bay was better than I had expected. Bed was comfortable. The kitchen is very small. It was difficult for two people to pass each other in it. But it was extremely well supplied as was the whole house. The location is great for proximity to fantastic hikes, mostly along the coast. Highly recommend this home.
This is a completely charming, lovingly decorated historic cottage with an impressive view, which we enjoyed from the outdoor patio and indoor porch (with multiple windows looking out on the bay). There are lovely paintings and knickknacks throughout each room, which probably makes it less suitable for folks with very young children. The main bedroom was spacious and also has bay views. There is a very small bedroom upstairs, but that's seems not as usable. While the kitchen is indeed tiny, we found it to be very well-equipped, and we prepared several meals in it, including lobsters, which we steamed in the huge lobster pot thoughtfully provided by Ed. There were also lobster picks and crackers! The plumbing worked very well, and the soap and fluffy towels were nice to have. Ed's recommendations for nearby hikes and eateries came in handy. We strongly recommend Helen's. We did several hikes, including one at Quoddy Head Light and one on the Cutler Preserve. We also enjoyed an afternoon at Jasper Beach and trips to Canada--to Campobello and to St. Andrews-by-the-Sea. While there's no washer/dryer (something the listing was upfront about), there was an excellent laundromat a short drive away in Machias. All in all, we very much enjoyed our stay in this magical place!
The cottage was warm and charming, better than the pictures show. I went to hike, bike and paddle, and the location was perfect, it offered a lot more than I could do in a week without travelling very far. The only down-side was the road noise, it took away from the enjoyment of the cottage. Part of that is I live on a quite dead end street. Other than that, everything was perfect.
Spent the week on the deck or in the screened porch watching the river go in and out with the tides. The house was cozy, the bed was comfy and I liked its proximity to Machias for groceries and Lubec for hiking

About the host

I'm a "dyed in the wool" enthusiast of all things Maine - especially the Down East Coast. Of course, Machiasport - home of wonderful Heron View Cottage - holds a special place in my heart. As I love the outdoors, I hike the nearby spectacular coastal trails as much as possible when I'm there. For my livelihood, I'm a fine art and antiques appraiser, and I've thoughtfully outfitted the cottage with comfortable and fascinating country antiques. And as I'm also a historic preservationist, it's been a treat to restore and upgrade the charming, ca. 1800 Heron View Cottage. I know you will enjoy the cottage as much as I do!
Why they chose this property
The minute I laid my eyes on Heron View Cottage, I was smitten. A charming half-cape style house, it was built ca. 1800, and the location cannot be beat - it's close to the bay shore so that the views are absolutely spectacular! There are so many great things about the cottage and the area - the warmth, comfortableness and character of the cottage itself, the breath-taking views, the bird-watching right out the back, watching the sun rise and set - and watching the tides rise and fall! It's all good!
