The Old Farmstead

The Old Farmstead is a lovely historic home build in 1937. It has been renovated and refinished in 2021 without losing the charm of its origins. The house is completely surrounded by farmlands for a quiet and relaxing place to visit. It has unbeatable views of the Bitterroot Mountains, a breathtaking location to enjoy the sunrise and sunsets of the Valley.
Centrally located it is only 7 miles for downtown Stevensville and 3.5 miles for the town of Victor. Only a 5 minute drive for a wonderful access point to the blue ribbon Bitterroot River.

This serene property was perfect forbour girls' trip! The views were beautiful. There is privacy, yet still a short drive to the lovely towns nearby. There is immense charm in this updated farmhouse. Yes, as others stated, there are some squeaky spots with the hardwood floors, but only noticeable on late-night restroom trips. We had no issue with having only one shower with four of us. We would recommend lamps in upstairs rooms. Otherwise, it was bucolic. (My friend came up with this perfect description!) It was so good for our souls and we'd stay here again! Lovely, lovely property!

The overall location was amazing…. Only one shower for 8 guests…. I missed that in the description, the floors were annoyingly squeaky, both upstairs and down and the coffee pit had not been cleaned prior to our arrival. A cooler would have been handy to use for the time and even a few beach type chairs…

Dear Guest, The charm of the Farm Stead is that the house is over a 90 years old! It has been restored with modern conveniences but care has been taken to retain the homestead feel. Squeaky floors and a single shower/tub are part of this original charm. The beauty of the home and surrounding land is something we take pride in maintaining. As for the coffee pot, we apologize for this and will be sure to check its condition in the future.

The farmstead was an amazing property! We came to MT from TX to escape the heat and leave our home responsibilities to someone else, and we won big! The weather was lovely; the front patio saw hours of daily use; the fire pit at night was peaceful. The owner was friendly (not a corporate manager! a real property owner!) and there were working, family-owned fields surrounding the property. (It was hay-mowing season -- fascinating!) Our favorite things to do during our week-long stay: stay up late and sleep late; eat at interesting, nearby restaurants that satisfied our amateur-foodie palates; shop for used books; ride innertubes down the river; some fly-fishing, birdwatching, and easy hiking to beautiful overlooks; occasional visits from the owner's very friendly doggo. We cooked a little in a well-equipped kitchen. Breathtaking scenery, so many mountains, including a snow-capped mountain we could see from the patio.It's very likely we'll visit the Farmstead again! We loved it! (four adults, no young kids in our group)

Beautiful Bitterroot Retreat!

We loved the entire stay - from booking to check in, to the stay, to the check out. The host, properly manager and care taker were great. Beautiful old farmhouse. They allowed us to walk around the property. We made a campfire. We made smores. It was a wonderful stay.

The Farmstead was beautiful!

We all really enjoyed our stay at the farmstead. It was really nice to be in a secluded area. The views are spectacular and we got to experience the local wildlife. The house was very comfortable and the amenities made it even better. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Fantastic time in Western Montana!

We recently concluded our stay at "The Old Farmstead" and found it fantastic. The quiet evenings, visiting White Tail deer every morning and Great Blue Herons were a relaxing change from our city life. Be sure to visit this retreat, you won't be disappointed.

Slice of heaven in the Bitterroot!

This old farmstead was exactly what we were needing for the weekend! The host was amazing and very accommodating. The location is amazing, very reminiscent of visiting grandma's house. Couldn't have asked for a better place. We will be back for certain!!

5 of us stayed in this beautiful home as our good friend was getting married nearby. The place was perfect, exactly what we were looking for. Laurie Sutherlin is the home owner. She is a Montana native and respected member of the local community. She runs the farmlands (with her husband) that surround the home and lives full-time near by. Laurie has worked hard to restore his historic home and property.

Why they chose this property

The farmlands surrounding the home have been worked by the Sutherlin family for over ten years. They only acquired the home in 2020, when the previous family owners decided that the restoration project was to much to take on. Bringing back this home has been a labor of love and Laurie Sutherlin is happy to share its history with the visitors to the area.

What makes this property unique

Staying at the Old Farmstead allows for a unique opportunity to stay in a historic home. Updated with modern conveniences it is a relaxing property to come home to after a day of adventuring in the Bitterroot Valley. It is a very private and quiet setting with only the occasional farm equipment passing by during the day to remind visitors of the amazing farmlands that keep Montana a vibrant place to live.
