Wonderful vacation in beautiful place

This was one of the most impeccable places we've ever stayed in! Everything was perfect: the location, the layout of the place, how clean, cozy, and well stocked the house was, the beautiful surroundings, the wonderful hosts . . . The yummy gift basket was a wonderful surprise. We'll be back for sure :)

Will be back ASAP

There are thousands of places on VRBO, and I know I chose the right one. Stuart and Victoria have outdone themselves. If you need to recharge, this is the place. Quiet comfort is the style here. I am so thankful we had the opportunity to experience it.

Livingston Getaway

This property is beautiful. The home is fully equipped and decorated nicely making it feel that you live there. The grounds are well maintained and a bonus if you like to river fish. Just far enough from town to be private but close enough to enjoy the many restaurants Livingston has to offer. Just a 1 hr drive to Yellowstone Park. The owners are easy to talk to and always available when you need them. You can't go wrong with this property.

Peaceful Week in the Mountains

The property was extremely clean on arrival, and Victoria's gift basket is such a great touch. The Anzac cookies were so good, they didn't last long! We were initially unclear about where the property lines were, but once that was figured out, we enjoyed fishing the river, climbing the hill for some great views, and playing with the kids in the absurdly lush lawn. The house set up is simple, and worked great for us, with a large kitchen/dining area, and some very comfy couches in the living space. The pictures really don't do it justice. The property is private, however, you aren't extremely secluded, if that's what you're looking for. Location was out of the way, yet close to town, great hikes, fishing, and other recreation options. Would certainly stay again.

No complaints, only praise

The house did not disappoint in any way. There were four of us, two couples. The floor plan of the house was perfect. The master bedroom with ensuite is at one end of the house, the other two bedrooms are at the other end of a long hallway. Those two bedrooms share a hall bathroom. The property is quiet and private. It's a short walk to the river on a mowed path. We did not wade the river, simply by choice. We did catch a fish or two. That number may be simply lack of experience. LOL Victoria and Stuart were great hosts. Check in, check out instructions were clear and simple, they answered any texts (questions) we had very timely. Book it, you will not be disappointed! Thank you Victoria, we hope to be back someday.

Better than expected

There are way too many examples of why this property is so special. So the highlights: meticulously clean: beyond well stocked with anything and everything you could need; decor is perfect for the location; deer grazing out front and back; the river is easily accessed and you can hear it particularly at night. I could go on and on! The hosts Victoria and Stuart are welcoming and quick to respond to any questions. Victoria provides a welcome basket with wine, homemade cookies (be careful, they are addicting), and homemade jam. Then she dropped off peonies from her garden a few days later. We were unable to start the grill one night and Victoria came over immediately to fix the issue (not enough propane so she brought us another one). This is the perfect house in the perfect location (10 minutes to get into the heart of Livingston) for any vacation. I highly recommend this property and can’t wait until we return.

Exemplary property and amenities

This property ranks at the very top of all of our rentals over many years and across the world. Victoria and Stuart were courteous, prompt and thoughtful in all of their interactions with us and, especially in their provision of amenities and supplies in this relaxing home. We spent a wonderful week at the Hideaway and in the surroundings. The Shields Valley is an unspoiled and quiet corner of this region and we had fun exploring the area, making trips into Paradise Valley and even attending church in little Clyde Park. We love to cook and did a lot of cooking in the kitchen, and found a full supply of cooking utensils and dishes both there and for the outdoor gas grill which we used to grill the lake trout we caught in Yellowstone Lake one day. Even when the hot water heater stopped working one day, V & S quickly came to the rescue with an alternate bathroom on the property. All-in-all, we can't compliment the owners enough - it was truly a treat to spend a few days in a home which felt just like our own. One last note - if you can, make time for some stargazing at this property when the skies are clear. It's hard to put into words how incredible the night sky from the front or back yard. We will be back!

Shields River Stay

Property owner, Victoria was very accommodating with flight disruptions due to COVID. When we arrived, this by far is the cleanest well-kept property we have ever stayed at! Beds, pillows, and linens were comfortable in all rooms. The area is very quiet and secluded, we couldn’t see or hear any neighbors other than the deer that wandered in the woods behind the house in the morning. Victoria left a thoughtful welcome gift basket for us on the counter with local goodies! You can tell she is very passionate about what she does! The property is big and we absolutely love the mowed trails through the woods down to the river… great for a short hike. The water is very clean and easily accessible for fishing. We hiked up the Massacre Hill on the property… very challenging, but definitely worth the view once you get up there! We spent some time at Yellowstone, about an hour drive from the house to the north gate. The lines are shorter at the north gate, the weekday wait is only about 5-10 mins. Compared to other Yellowstone gate entrances, you probably save 30 mins! Buy your park passes online to save time too. We grocery shopped at Albertsons and Town & Country in Livingston. They were both priced similar to the Bozeman Walmart. Thank you Victoria for a great stay!

You should stay here :)

Victoria was very accomodating and helpful with my many questions as this was my first cabin type rental. The property was better than I expected. We had excellent fishing and the daily wildlife was an extra bonus. My girls loved the swimming hole. It's a very short distance to Livingston. I recommend Gil's Goods for eating, The rib and chop restaurant was always busy we just never made it there. We ate on the patio and simply enjoyed the little bit of heaven around us. The washer and dryer were a huge bonus. The beds were very comfortable and the fresh air made for very restfull sleep. The kitchen is very ample. I enjoyed the jetted tub after a day at Yellowstone. The north entrance to Yellowstone is a nice drive and takes an hour give or take, depending on traffic. If you stay here, take some time to visit the boiling springs with your kids. It's a popular swimming area south of the north gate that is warmed by a geyser. There's a very nice reservoir in Bozeman with a really great waterfull that's only about 45 mins away as well. The hike is easy enough that a 4 yr old could do it. On a personal note, if you drink whiskey as my man does, He highly suggests trying the local made Neversweat. In his opinion it's "amazing". Our time here went by way to fast and we all miss it!!!

Great place and great host

The place was very clean and stocked with everything you could ever want. The host was great and the location was very nice. Our only issue was that it was unseasonably warm for Montana (in the 90s) and there is no A/C. Not a problem 11 1/2 months of the year but something to keep in mind if you visit in the summer. Other than that, great little quiet place to stay. Close to Livingston which is still a nice quiet little town and about 30 minutes from Bozeman. Loved it.

Perfect base for exploring Montana

Enjoy stunning views of the mountains from the front of the house and the beautiful Shields River in the backyard. We enjoyed swimming and fishing in the river. The property provided the perfect base for exploring Montana. It is within a reasonable driving distance to Yellowstone NP, Beartooth Pass, and many other adventures. The house was equipped with everything you could possibly need. The large cooler and ice packs were a much appreciated bonus for packing food for day trips. The kitchen was equipped with pantry staples and most any kitchen gadget or appliance you might need. The property was exceptionally clean and well-kept. The host provided everything we needed and was available at all times to answer our questions. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful property with us!

This property did not disappoint. It had everything that was said and more. Very cleaned home. Had many informative books about the region. Their yard was greener then mine. Only thing I wish is they would have fishing pole you could borrow. My family enjoyed this property even with the 140 year old flood there was more to see and do then just Yellowstone.

Idyllic Montana Retreat

Everything about this home comes through as promised n the VRBO descriptions. It is clean and nicely appointed. Everything you need is right there. The views in every direction are spectacular. We’re bird watchers and were pleasantly surprised by the numbers and variety of our feathered friends. Nearby Livingston has a lot to offer. Fishing opportunities abound. The owners are nearby and happy to help. Everyone in our party loved it.

Peaceful country retreat with every amenity

We stayed at the property for 6 days as part of our trip to drop off our son for college. The house was very, very clean and well stocked with just about every item you would ever need. Victoria provided a wonderful gift basket full of goodies for us when we arrived: homemade cookies and jam, wine, coffee, and huckleberry licorice. Yum! Being right on the river provided us with lots of wildlife viewing opportunities. Deer frequented the property and we especially loved the mama and baby deer that wondered through the yard. Victoria is a friendly and accommodating host who worked with us to check in early on our arrival day. We hope to stay here again the next time we come to visit our son. Thanks again for a wonderful stay!

Awesome hosts

Stuart and Victoria were amazing! Awesome property with great access to what the beautiful state of Montana has to offer. We took a couple with us that had never been to this amazing state, and they were in awe! The first three days were kind of warm, but the fourth day we received about 4 to 5 inches of snow which our friends were loving. Stuart was shoveling it of the front and back porch in the morning. Being from Florida we almost wished he hadn’t. Very accommodating hosts there’s no way you can go wrong with these people!!!

About the host

Hosted by Victoria Schilling

Host profile image
We are a young family of four living in paradise..

I am a transplant to Montana from Sydney, Australia via London and New York. Despite having grown up in a large coastal city in Australia, and worked most of my career in the corporate world in big cities, life in the country was the dream - a place to breathe fresh air, take things a little more slowly, appreciate nature, enjoy quality of life and raise a family. My husband is a local - he grew up here, was educated here, runs a business here and his family all still live here.

It was an easy decision for us to start our family life here together and create a home for our two wonderful children. We love and appreciate where we live and hope to be able to share it with you someday.
Victoria Schilling

Why they chose this property

We knew this was the place for our family when we found it - properties like this in the Shields Valley of this size, with private river frontage and still close to Livingston, are hard to come by.

The Shields Valley is a magical place. Picturesque, undeveloped, with the river, the mountains, the wildlife and birdlife, the warm glow of the rising sun on the Crazy Mountains, clear twinkling night skies - it is hard not to feel privileged to live somewhere so special.

Being right on the Shields River we enjoy all it has to offer including swimming, tubing and fishing in summer, and in winter we are able to ice-skate on our own frozen pond and cross-country ski through the wonderful walking trails through our woods.

Also for us the convenience of living in the country, just 10 minutes from the historic town of Livingston, is the perfect balance.

What makes this property unique

The guest house is the original ranch house on the property, all on one level it is ideally laid out with the master bedroom and en-suite at one end of the house, the second bathroom and two bedrooms along a hallway at the other end, and the kitchen and open dining area and living room in the middle. It is set up as we would like it set up for ourselves, our family and friends, so there are a lot more of the little extras and conveniences that make it even more like a home away from home.

Right on the Shields River, fishing access doesn't get much better. River access also provides ample swimming and tubing opportunities. With stunning views of the Crazy Mountains and surrounded by a huge expanse of lawn, it is ideal for outdoor relaxing and games. There are private woods, walking trails and a riverside path to stretch your legs and explore.

The property has all the benefits of a country hideaway, yet is barely 10 minutes' drive to the historic town of Livingston with all its amenities, services, outfitters, shopping, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, museums and galleries; 40 minutes to the larger town of Bozeman and Bozeman Yellowstone International airport (BZN); barely an hour's drive to Yellowstone National Park; and less than an hour to the nearest ski field.
