Hosted by Janet Kohl
Hi, I'm Janet! I'm, a real estate agent and developer with 20+ years of experience flipping houses and I hold awards in both restoration and design. I'm driven by a single goal: to help people who've struggled with difficult challenges in life start over. After going through the highest of highs as a successful real estate developer to the lowest of lows as the market and my marriage both crashed, I discovered what it takes to rebuild your life and become truly happy and passionate about life. Now that I'm back in the game, my mission is to help others create a home and a life they love! I look forward to meeting you and hearing about your adventures and passions and I hope you love my home as much as I do! XOXO
Why they chose this property
I bought this house when I was 29 and spent 12 years meticulously restoring it back to its original splendor. When I bought it was totally uninhabitable! The roof leaked, there were holes through the ballroom floors and none of the bathrooms worked. However, all of the original features were intact such as the bathrooms with original subway tile, claw foot tubs and a full body spray shower in the master bathroom. Most of the light fixtures were intact as well as the original ice box in the kitchen. I kept everything and restored all that was damaged. The leaky slate roof was repaired, all the brick was tuck pointed, all the paint was stripped (both inside and out), plaster repaired, floors refinished and all new plumbing and electric was put in. I designed a retro kitchen with all the modern amenities to look as close to original as possible but hiding the refrigerator and dish washer behind cabinet panels. The house is decorated with a mix of antiques and contemporary furniture and a vast art collection. It really was a labor of love. The house is a National Landmark and was voted an Evanston Landmark, too. It is probably the most authentically original house in Evanston as I have all the original features intact, including bathrooms. The house has been used for a designer show house and been featured on TV and in movies. The best part is the wonderful historic neighborhood, one block to the lakefront and beaches.
