About this property

Peacock Garden Cottage

2 bedroom, 1 bathroom cottage with eat-in kitchen, living room and sun-room.
Outdoor grill with large deck.

Master bedrooms with queen bed. Second bedroom with two twin beds, which can be combined to form a king-size bed upon request. Sofa bed in sun-room.

Relax with nature, sitting in an intimate outdoor sanctuary behind the house… There is a secluded back deck bordered by a wild hill garden that overflows onto it. Steps will lead you up to a leveled lawn with more native fauna and trees. A narrow-gauge railway had run through the property, bringing milk from the area’s once-plentiful dairy farms to the city.

Exotic and lush with both plants and sounds, this is not the usual upstate home. Picture this scene with the occasional peacock strolling through. The house sits amongst a natural habitat for birds and small animals, created by the canopies of black walnuts, tall spruce, maples and willows. Do not expect a manicured garden, it’s more of an immersion into nature.

The cottage is situated on a scenic country road, surrounded by horse farms and rolling hills. Great for strolls and bicycling. It is one of a small group of homes comprising the picturesque hamlet or more descriptively, the 'bend in the road' known as Shekomeko. The house next door is the owner’s.

The Peacock Garden Cottage can be accessed from NYC by a 2+ hour car trip OR a Metro-North Train to Wassaic, then taxi. The closest towns are Millerton and Pine Plains. Hudson, Rhinebeck, Red Hook are to the West and under 40 minutes drive. The Connecticut towns of Sharon, Lakeville and Salisbury are under 20 minutes away.

At the top of Dutchess County, this is Northern Hudson Valley and considered to be at the foothills of the Berkshires. On a map, it is the area of New York State where it intersects both corners of Connecticut and Massachusetts. Lots to see and do in all directions around the house, if you choose to leave the property.

2nd stay in this charming house
We stayed in this house last year and liked it so much we went back again. Three of us stayed very comfortably - two of us sharing a room with the twin beds, and the 3rd getting her own big bed. We spent time sitting around the kitchen table as well as hanging out in the living room. We had everything we needed, very easy and cozy. The countryside around is gorgeous, with the leaves changing colors. And the peacocks coming to visit is a bonus! Note that the house is a bit hard to find on the winding country roads, but look for the star in the window! (And Google Maps/Waze are super helpful, just make sure you put the destination into your phone before you get out there where there's no wifi signal.)

Perfect Country Getaway
We enjoyed everything about Peacock Cottage! The house is simple but very clean, comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. There are two private outdoor decks to enjoy surrounded by beautiful gardens, trees and wildlife. The hosts were very helpful and provided lots of information about the area. Fresh flowers in every room were so sweet and welcoming! We will definitely come again!

Bird Haven
Excellently located to all we wanted to do! The property itself was cute and quiet. We spotted some peacocks across the street, and off the top of my head I cannot recall another time I’ve seen as many native bird species! Watching the bird feeders while enjoying morning coffee was one of the best parts of our stay. If we are ever in the area again, we would be happy to stay here once more!

We even saw the peacocks?
My friends and I had a wonderful stay. The house was very well set up, with all the dishes, towels, blankets, firewood, and everything else we might need. The decor makes it feel very homey (we especially liked the wallpaper in the bathroom). We spent lots of time sitting around the kitchen table talking, eating, drinking, and looking out the back window at the trees and animals. We even saw the peacocks strutting around the house on our last morning! We hope to go back next year.
