The small village of Arès is located north of the Bassin d'Arcachon, between Andernos and Lège Cap Ferret.
Its little oyster-farming village with its white and blue huts is typical of the basin. It marks the start of the Prés Salés, a marshy area at the bottom of the basin where it's great to stroll, hike or observe the local flora and fauna.
Following the basin along the coastal path, you'll reach Andernos via the natural site of the Quinconces.
Next to Arès, you'll find Andernos les Bains. Andernos les bains is a town of over 12,000 inhabitants, with 1 cinema, an indoor public swimming pool, 1 skate park, 1 city stadium, several children's playgrounds, a climbing gym, a laser game... You can stroll along the pedestrian street for a spot of shopping, eat an ice cream or a crêpe, stroll along the jetty (the longest in France, offering a unique panorama of the Bassin, the cabanes Tchanquées, the Île aux oiseaux...) or eat oysters in one of the many tasting rooms in the port.
Not forgetting the Domaine de Certes (Audenge), the Teich bird sanctuary, the Aqualand park (Gujan Mestas), the Parc de le Coccinelle and Kid parc Gujan mestras).
1 hour to the south, you can't come to the basin without visiting Arcachon and the winter town, then climbing the Dune du Pilat.
30 minutes to the north, you can visit the Cap Ferret peninsula, with its 10 villages, oyster-farming ports, Cap Ferret lighthouse, panoramic view of the Pointe du Cap Ferret, Frédhélian ice cream parlors, Bélisaire jetty, little train...
The vast network of cycle paths in the Gironde allows you to cycle around the basin, to the ocean beaches, Cap Ferret or even Arcachon for the more motivated.
UBA maritime shuttles run from Andernos to Arcachon and from Cap Ferret to Arcachon.
The Passe Marée (tidal pass) also allows you to reach Arcachon by sea, even at low tide, but it also offers walks around the basin, starting from Andernos.
On the Basin side, you'll find a multitude of small beaches between Arès and Andernos, but you'll have to wait until high tide to swim there, except at Lac de Saint Brice (Arès), a small reservoir in the Basin, where you can swim whatever the tide.
With children, you'll love the Betey beach (Andernos), where you can enjoy a children's playground right on the beach, sample ice creams, crêpes, etc. in the small beach snack bar, picnic in the shade of the pine trees and swim at high tide.
On the Atlantic Ocean side, the Grand Crohot beach is the closest ocean beach to Andernos (about 15 minutes by car), but you'll find a multitude of more or less frequented, more or less accessible beaches along the kilometers of coastline offered by the Atlantic Ocean.
In summer, CAP 33 offers a wide range of free sporting activities open to all (see online program).
If you like local markets, here's a list of nearby markets:
Marché d'Arès: every Tuesday morning
Marché d'Andernos: every Friday morning, open-air and covered market (open according to season).
Lège Bourg market: every Saturday morning.
Cap Ferret market: every morning from mid-June to mid-September, then on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays the rest of the year.
Piraillan market: every morning from mid-June to mid-September.
You can do your shopping in the Arès supermarkets: Leclerc, Lidl and Carrefour City.
In summer and winter alike, the basin is alive with local events all year round:
The Arès oyster festival on the weekend of August 15
Cabanes en fête on the 1st Saturday in December
The Andernos jazz festival at the end of July
And let's not forget Lacanau, Soulac-sur-Mer, Bordeaux, the Médoc vineyards and its châteaux...
Sun or rain, hot or cold, high or low tide, as a couple or with the family... you'll always find something to do on the Bassin... and you'll always want to come back!
