About this property

Oceanfront Bluff Home - Whale Watching, Redwoods, Wood Stove & Pet Friendly

Welcome to Sunset Sanctuary — a coastal retreat designed to calm the mind and recharge the spirit. Perched above the Pacific on the Crescent City bluffs, this is a place where the ocean is never out of sight or earshot.

Light a fire in the wood stove, pour something warm, and watch the sun melt into the sea from the deck. Gray Whales migrate past seasonally, and Pilot Whales cruise these waters year-round — keep your eyes on the horizon.

Beach access is just a block away, where a short walk leads down to Preston Island — a dramatic rocky shoreline with sandy stretches perfect for a stroll with your pet (who we’re always happy to welcome). For swimming and surfing, Crescent Beach is a easy 5-minute drive.

The old-growth redwoods of Jedediah Smith are 30 minutes inland. The harbor, restaurants, coffee, and everything else you’ll need are within 10 minutes. And when the day is done, the wood stove, the sound of the waves, and a sky full of stars will be waiting for you.

One more thing — you’ll notice a vintage Airstream parked on the property. She’s stationary and being lovingly restored as an optional guest add-on launching Autumn 2026. Something special is coming.

Check-out instructions

The host requires you to complete the following before checking out:
Load and start the dishwasher
Gather used towels and store extra beds
Remove personal items, remove leftover food and drinks and take out the rubbish
Turn off the lights and lock the doors
Starting a load of dishes before you leave is appreciated. One important note: please HAND WASH the cast iron skillets only — never the dishwasher (it ruins them). Rinse hot, scrub, towel dry.
Please leave towels in a pile on the floor in front of the washer in the kitchen pantry and please bring garbage and recyclables to the bins behind the house. If full, use the large bin in the garage.
Check your car for forgotten beach towels before you leave — and please add a note to The Sanctuary Journal on the piano if you haven't already!
Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.

Amazing ocean view, cute vintage cabin, everything was clean (if older, which matched the vintage beach house aesthetic very nicely). The porch had unparalleled sunset ocean views and the location was great for both beach access and getting to explore the redwoods

This house and location are wonderful. I could have sat on the patio and looked at the ocean the entire trip. It’s very dog friendly. Communication with the host was great. The master bedroom is on the main level so that was great for us. I really hope to go back.

We loved staying at Sunset Sanctuary. The home was well stocked with everything we could need from kitchen dishes, pots and pans to beach towels. There is an amazing coastal view from the back patio and also from the comfortable living room. The beds were comfortable, the house was clean and communication with the host was quick and easy. About the host

Hosted by Shawn Lyons

Host profile image
I’m a creative soul and lifelong traveler with a deep love for wild places, good music, and genuine connection. I fell in love with this stretch of the Northern California coast years ago — the dramatic cliffs, the ancient redwoods, the way the light hits the ocean at sunset — and eventually decided to share it. Hosting gives me the chance to introduce people to a place that genuinely moves me, and I take real pride in making sure every guest feels taken care of.

Why they chose this property

Only 20 miles south of Oregon, Crescent City is one of California’s best kept secrets. The northernmost lighthouse in the state — the 1856 Battery Point Lighthouse — sits on a tiny granite island only reachable on foot at low tide. Walk the causeway, climb the spiral staircase, crawl through a trap door, and you’re rewarded with a 360-degree view that stops you cold.

A few miles offshore sits St. George Reef Lighthouse, built after the 1865 wreck of the Brother Jonathan — rumored to have gone down carrying 1.5 tons of gold coins and bullion, much of which was never recovered. See it from the bluffs at Point St. George; its original Fresnel lens is on display at the Del Norte County Museum.

Wander the waterfront and take in the fact that this entire city was rebuilt after a devastating 1964 tsunami — the warning signs around town are a striking reminder. Stop by Ocean World to watch sea lions play catch with visitors, or visit the Northcoast Marine Mammal Center where injured seals and sea lions recover before being released. Call ahead for feeding time.

Pebble Beach Drive is right around the corner from Sunset Sanctuary — one of the best places on the coast to hunt for agates and semi-precious gemstones.

Drive inland 30 minutes and you’re in another world — the ancient old-growth redwoods of Jedediah Smith State Park. The Grove of Titans contains trees so massive they weren’t fully documented until 1998. Howland Hill Road winds through the heart of the forest and is the kind of drive that makes you pull over every hundred yards just to stare.

And yes — this is Bigfoot Country. The forest here is dense enough that you start to understand why. Keep your eyes on the tree line. The locals have stories.

What makes this property unique

Sunset Sanctuary sits at the edge of one of the most extraordinary ecosystems on earth. Just outside your door, a spectacular network of parks protects nearly half of the world’s coast redwoods — the tallest living things on the planet, some reaching over 350 feet. But the redwoods are just the beginning.

Roosevelt elk — genuinely massive animals — graze in open prairies along the parkway. Wild beaches stretch for miles with barely a footprint in sight, framed by weathered driftwood and rivers tumbling into the sea. Gray whales migrate past seasonally. Pilot whales cruise these waters year-round. On a clear morning from the deck, you might spot both.

Three state parks — Jedediah Smith, Del Norte Coast, and Prairie Creek Redwoods — work alongside Redwood National Park to protect this remarkable region, offering hiking, kayaking, tide pooling, wildlife watching, and some of the most humbling scenery in North America.

There are places that remind you how small you are in the best possible way. This is one of them. Sunset Sanctuary puts you right at the threshold.
