About this property

Rustic Beach Retreat — 100 Yards from Beach— Dogs Welcome!

You can hear the ocean from this excellent island location that's just a 100 yard walk down a dead-end street that ends at the beach! The entire ground floor of the home is where you’ll be. The space is cool as an oasis with tiled floors offset by the warmth of vintage California redwood paneling and exposed brick walls. It's not updated and decked out with all the latest gadgets or appliances and is very simplistic, rustic, and kind of quirky. To offset what it’s lacking, it does have a great beach-y vibe and a primo location. *NOTE: There is no washer /dryer. You will only have access to the ground floor of house.
The space is suitable for 2 people, or 3 if the third person wants to sleep on a small couch, or you're welcome to bring a blow-up mattress – there is ample room for one. (see photos). It has an open floor plan with a queen bed, small primitive kitchen with an adjacent little sunny sitting room, and a windowless bathroom with a tiled shower and a large cedar lined closet area to store your bags.

**Guests do not have access to AC/Heat controls. This house is equipped with a geo-thermal unit. If you desire a certain temp, please let us know and we will adjust the thermostat to your desire. However being an older home located in a subtropical climate, it’s never going to be 65 degrees inside during the summer months.
The property was once a huge sand dune. It is very shady with lots of live oaks and palm trees and has wild, unkempt vegetation everywhere – there is no manicured lawn here. (FYI: this is what this end of Isle of Palms looked like before it was developed with all the houses and their unnatural manicured lawns). We have chosen to have a sustainable yard – no watering required – and provide an ecological oasis for native plants and animals. If you're lucky, you will see the small herd of white tail deer that call a corner of the yard home. PLEASE NOTE: We are surrounded by lots of trees and unkempt vegetation; therefore, there is not a lot of natural light on the ground floor, so it may be too dark inside for some people’s taste. We have ample lighting and lamps throughout to compensate for the lack of natural light coming through the windows and doors. However, this can be beneficial especially during the hot summer months after being out on the beach all day.
So, if what you’re looking for is a place with all the bells and whistles of a newly renovated home or an airy light-filled modern beach house with all the latest appliances and perks, please look elsewhere – you’re not going to be happy here. We want our guests to be happy and comfortable during their stay and enjoy their time in our ocean playground.
**FYI: there is no dishwasher. And the washer/dryer in the apartment do not work. If you need to do laundry, there is an IOP Laundromat about 2.5 miles away in the Harris Teeter shopping center.

PETS: We do accept friendly, housebroken dogs only – Limit Two (2) Dogs – preferably smaller dogs, but will accept large dogs depending on breed. ALL DOGS MUST BE PRE-APPROVED PRIOR TO BOOKING. We charge a pet fee of $20 per dog. This fee is included in your quote. Also, when outside, your dog will have to be on a leash and all pet waste will have to be picked up and disposed in the trash can outside by the curb. We do not accept cats.
City of Isle of Palms Dog Rules: Dogs can run off-leash on the beach every day from 5a.m. to 9a.m., after that, they must be leashed at all times.
If you would like more info, please inquire via email and I’ll be happy to answer any of your questions before you book. Cristina

Accurate Description on IOP where we wanted to be...
This Rustic Beach Retreat location on IOP was exactly what we wanted! We Read and Reread the absolute narrative description of this "very simplistic, rustic, and kind of quirky" home. The absolute description says it all, as the explanation is indeed absolutely accurate. To offset what it’s lacking, it does have a "great beach-y vibe and a primo location". As stated: the "cottage" "may be too dark inside for some people’s taste", however for us this simplistic, rustic & quirky abode was a reprieve from ALL of the other homes that are exactly alike! Great location and where we not only wanted to be, BUT where we needed to be! Thanks for letting us stay!

Cozy winter beach stay
This was our third time staying here in the winter, although the weather is always pretty nice. It's a great spot for our dog to enjoy the beach. We had everything we needed and enjoy the architecture. Will be back again!

2 minute walk to the beach and only 25 minutes to Downtown Charleston
“Apartment” is the basement of an older house in a very nice area. Super close to the beach and nice and quiet. Outside area needs some fixing up but overall the property was unique in a good way. Close to restaurants and downtown Charleston is not far at all.

Relaxing stay!
We were traveling through Isle of Palms on our boat. We enjoyed the change of pace on land. The internet allowed us to catch up on work responsibilities. I appreciate that pets were welcome.

GM, or "X" as we call her, is the property owner. She moved to Isle of Palms from Germany in the 1967. She is a retired architect with 55+ years of experience. Her designs are inspired by nature and using natural materials. She has designed many architecturally beautiful and unique properties on both the Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island, including this house.

Why they chose this property

The house is on a dead end street that is very private because, well, there is not a lot of public parking.

What makes this property unique

This house may not be the prettiest on the street, but it is very unique and vintage. It's not a shiny white beach house, but it has been here the longest. It survived Hurricane Hugo in 1989 with minimal damage while a lot of other houses on the island were totally destroyed. It sits on top a huge half acre sand dune with a heavily wooded lot. Some people might say that it looks "unkempt", but the owner wants it to be an undisturbed natural habitat with all the flora and fauna that once was present on this South Carolina sea island. So if you want to stay in a fancy modern beach house with an unnatural manicured lawn, then please look elsewhere. We are definitely not where you want to be.
