History of The Wheeler-Farley House: Be swept back in time to when ?Timber was King? when you stay at The Wheeler-Farley House?
Purchased in 1929 by our great-grandparents, Joseph Allen and Rachel Wheeler Farley, The Wheeler-Farley House is located on land that was once owned by our great-great grandfather, Nelson Platt Wheeler. His company, Wheeler & Dusenbury, was a major player in the timber industry during the 1800s through the early 1900s. At one time, Wheeler & Dusenbury owned 55,000 acres in this area of Pennsylvania now known as ?The Pennsylvania Wilds?. Just about all of the land was sold or donated and is now incorporated into The Allegheny National Forest. As fate would have it, The Wheeler-Farley House came up for sale in the spring of 2006 after being out of the family since 1978.
We are so excited to have it back and hope that you will enjoy the land our ancestors loved, as we do, when you stay at The Wheeler-Farley House.
While there, look at pictures of days gone by, read about the logging camps of the area and the adventures on The Allegheny River, rafting the logs downstream. Visit an Old Growth Forest at Hearts Content, once a Wheeler & Dusenbury logging camp and now part of The Allegheny National Forest.
Referring to The Wheeler-Farley House, the son of the former owner said, Your ancestors sure knew what they were doing, they picked the prettiest place on The Allegheny River. We whole-heatedly agree with him and now want to share this beautiful land with you.
The Wheeler-Farley House is in The Allegheny National Forest in Forest County, 10 miles north of Tionesta and 4.5 miles south of Tidioute on Route 62.

This house was extremely clean, well stocked with everything you could need to cook with. It was spacious with an open concept. The view was great and the outdoor fire pit was great with a lot of benches. There were many beds and bottom story was nice for extra privacy. The hosts were very attentive to all of our needs and made extra helpful suggestions for us in the area.
We had a wonderful stay here. It is an absolutely beautiful location and the house is very spacious but still has a cozy, wood-cabin feel. Great communication with the hosts as well.
We had a wonderful time at this property. Communication with the host was A. The property is as described. The host was very clear about what to bring, and that info was helpful. It was one of the most relaxing vacations we’ve had in a long time. Campfires, fishing with the grandkids, canoeing and hiking. The home was spacious enough for everyone to gather together, but we also weren’t on top of each other. We loved our stay.
Stayed for an extended weekend with some friends. The place was great for getting together and had ample space for food and relaxing. There were many AC units which helped with the heat. The river location was unique and made an excellent quiet place for morning coffee. Frank was very responsive and helpful.
This was the second year I have taken my large family to unwind at this beautiful gem on the river. It’s a perfect spot to take off on the kayaks and canoe, then play evening kickball games in the nice large yard followed by grilling dinners on the old but glorious stone grill, and don’t forget the evening fire with smores at the fire pit. The views are spectacular and we just can’t get enough of it all! Frank is a wonderful hostess, thank you Frank!

Wheeler Farley house
We had a wonderful time! We are a group of women in our late fifties early sixties. The steps were a bit of a problem for us but we sure got our exercise! The river front was just beautiful! The house was fully equipped and very clean. I would recommend it for families with kids or family reunions the grounds are just beautiful.

thank you for the nice review, Linda! We are glad you had a nice girls trip and enjoyed our property. We are not suited for people with disabilities as the walk down to the river does include many steps! The trek is fine for people without disabilities and worth every step to enjoy beautiful sights, sounds and river activity!
This is the 5th year we have made our annual fall trip with out boys. 4 dads and 6 boys, 12 -16 years old.
Great field for football, whiffle ball, kickball and riding mini bikes. Also space for shooting BB guns and all outdoor recreation.
The river front was awesome for fishing. Caught a few small mouth bass and kept the boys fishing for 3 days.
The owner was responsive and the house was perfect for us. Spacious, clean and has a great cabin/ lodge feel. Exactly what we were looking for!

Property was great, owners not so much
The property & location are great . However there is no central air, there are mobile units throughout the house, when one of these units defaulted and we were forced to sleep on an air mattress in another room the husband assured me this has happened before, apologized many times & stated I would be reimbursed for this, now I am getting emails that they are keeping my deposit due to their faulty unit. Also on a different day breakers were popping so we kept losing power.

It is unfortunate that this guest has misrepresented what had happened and what was said. Every room has either window or free standing A/C units. Both issues were resolved within 15 minutes.
Issue One: The room A/C was reported on Saturday and the unit was replaced Monday. In order to accommodate the guest we gave them an option (not forced) to use a queen sized air mattress, that we kept locked in our owner’s closet, so they could sleep in a cooled room. What has happened before is we did have another A/C unit break which was replaced promptly. That guest was OK staying in their room until the A/C was fixed.
Issue 2: To our knowledge, one breaker tripped once during their stay and we guided the guest to the breaker panel to reset the breaker.
The reason for this bad review is that we had to keep their deposit due to damage. It is the first time in our 10 year existence that we kept any part of anybody's deposit.
Very nice. Very fun! Beautiful scenery and landscape. Plenty of green space for outside games. Plenty of parking. Beautiful outdoor fire pit and gorgeous large stone burnable indoor fireplace. House was very comfortable for 15 people. Very, very clean. Super stocked with necessities and kitchen equipment. Hosts have thought of everything! Nothing missing. We lacked for nothing.
Only major concern was open space near stairs landing. Could be dangerous with kids. Some railings seemed a little loose. Easy fixes.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommend!
This is the 2nd year in a row we've stayed at the property and it's perfect for groups. Great river front access along w/ plenty of yard space to throw the ball around or play cornhole.
The property also has a magnificent fire place for the evening time and the kitchen is well stocked to cook big group meals.
Easy access/ 10 minute drive to a market to get all of the basic needs.
The pictures don't do the house justice. The outdoor space is fantastic, includes 3 seperate decks and 2 porches in addition to the river front. The cumbersome check-in/reservation forms and lack of notification about blankets- bring your own, that wasn't on the listing although the practice is 3 years old, could be refined. Ths hosts communicated well, the house was immaculately clean, 3 total refrigerators, a large wood fireplace, the list goes on.
What an excellent place to stay to unwind, relax and enjoy the outdoors from a family kickball game to daily river trips on our kayaks and canoe ending evenings with cookout on the large stone grill followed by camp fire and s’mores. So enjoyed this property! Thank you Frank and Laurie
Absolutely incredible. Frank does a great job with communicating, and the cabin is absolutely incredible. the views of the river in the morning are unmatched.
We converged on the Wheeler-Farley house from California, Ohio and Pittsburgh to celebrate a few birthdays and family and friends in general.
It was a perfect property with spectacular river access and private seclusion.
The family is already talking about making this a yearly tradition.
My siblings and I gather for a week each October in a different location for a week. This year, the weather, location and accommodations were outstanding!
This house is the perfect get away in the beautiful foothills of the Appellation Mountains in PA. The house was spacious, kitchen is fully equipped with necessities, there was enough bathrooms and bedrooms, multiple indoor and outdoor seating, and the riverside views and splashes was the cherry on the cake. Highly recommend!!
Our family enjoyed a much needed weekend break at the Wheeler- Farley House. The home was both extremely clean and spacious. The location on the Allegheny River was both beautiful and secluded. The owners were very accessible and even reached out to us during our stay to ensure we had what we needed. My children are already asking to go back. I would most certainly recommend this rental for persons of all ages!
This property was perfect for our stay. Plenty of room for our group, we had ample space for everyone. We loved the decor and the history behind the property was very interesting.
The owner was just a phone call away when we had a small issue with the ice maker.
I would rent this property again.
