About this property

At The Edge Of Solitude Where Stars Are Bright And The Air Is Fresh

Fortunately, some of the most beautiful places on earth can be experienced without the cost and responsibility of actually owning them. Red Canyon Ranch in the Black Hills is no exception. Situated high atop the Black Hills historic red-limestone and sandstone canyon, the location of the original route into the Hills for both Native Americans and the white settlers that followed, Red Canyon Ranch is a monument to the cowboy lifestyle, with elements of luxury and style that most cowboys have probably never seen. The cabin is a lodge-pole pine dwelling, in the tradition of an aged lodge. The cabin sits on 110 private acres and offers full views of Red Canyon from three sides, rustic floors and cabinetry with natural dry-stack, slate fireplace in the living room, and master bedroom, and sleeping accommodations for 6 people. An outdoor hot tub that nearly floats above the canyon’s edge makes soaking under the stars a life time memory.

On a clear day, Red Canyon offers extraordinary views to its east, where sheer red walls accentuate the awesome powers that went into its creation, as well as the intricacies of its meandering path. To the south, across the canyon, the dense clustering of centuries-old Ponderosa pine easily explains how the area came to be known as the “Black” Hills . To the west, the canyon continues with steep rock walls, dramatic outcroppings and a long distance view to Wyoming.

You'll Love Our Neighbors: Red Canyon is home to one of the most diverse wildlife populations in the Black Hills. Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Eagles, Mountain Lions, Bobcats and Turkeys.

Explore The Best Part Of The Black Hills: The southern Black Hills holds something for everyone and every taste. Nestled among the rolling hills are quaint towns offering shopping, dining, and tourist attractions that could easily fill your day with smiles. The area also hosts some of the country’s most beautiful parks and well-known monuments, all within a short and scenic drive from each other.

At the Founder's Cabin, you'll have thousands of acres to explore whether hiking or horseback riding across this historic property.

The cabin was spectacular and the view was amazing. Once in a lifetime experience. It was further off the main road than we anticipated, but we were not familiar at all with the area.

This cottage is simply amazing. I went to South Dakota for the Sturgis motorcycle rally but was so captivated with the tranquility and views that I spent most of the vacation relaxing at the cottage. Waking up with 5 deer just outside the door to all of natures creatures and views surrounding me, I didn't want to leave. I couldn't have imagined anything more stunning. Thank you Lori!

House was great the gravel road was a little long but we new that going in, and the stairs to the loft are very steep need to come down with caution but overall very good experience.

Cabin in the pine trees

We stayed at the cabin and listened to the wind in the pine trees over looking the canyon. We saw turkey, and other birds, the cabin is well equipped to just stay there and enjoy, and the views are amazing. Shout out to Nina, the Thai food is the best. Highly recommend this cabin and already thinking how nice it would be in the winter.

Breathtaking

The cabin and the view is beautiful but the 11 miles of gravel is a big drawback. If you’re going to stay at the cabin the whole time the gravel road isn’t bad but we went some where all three days we were there. We did see Buffalo and antelope.

Just WOW!

This was an amazing place to stay! We enjoyed hiking, hot tub, bird watching, enjoyed the sound of the little water fall feature and relaxing on the deck! Everything was super clean and neat. I loved the landscaping around the cabin. The view from the cabin was breath taking. Thank you for sharing this amazing place with us. Oh, Nina's Thai food was so good too!

The Best

My wife and I couldn’t have enjoyed our stay anymore than we did. We had a lot planned for our stay and cancelled a couple of the plans because we wanted to spend more time at the property. The views, the cabin, the hot tub, the garden, the solitude, Nina’s Thai Food, I could keep going on and on! This was a world class place to stay and to enjoy everything that the Black Hills has to offer, but in the privacy of your own space. We loved it!

PERFECT

We could literally make this review as long as a novel, however, we wont. Let us just say everything was beyond wonderful, from the booking, the directions and drive to the location, the cabin and all things in and around it, the views, local day trips, Nina's food, and the checkout! If you would like an amazingly, fantastic and tranquil weekend or longer, do not hesitate to book!!

Perfect

This cabin made me absolutely fall in love with South Dakota. It was pretty and well taken care of. I dropped one of my AirPods under some furniture—when I looked under to grab them, there wasn’t a spot of dust! It was also easy to drive to. The road was well maintained. Definitely worth ordering food from Nina! She cooked some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had!

Little cabin that touches heaven

This cabin is exactly as it appears. Waking up in the morning with a light dusting of snow only adds to the magic. The views are unbelievable. The cabin itself is beautiful, cozy, private and the perfect place to escape the world. This really is a destination stay and is perfect if that is what you are looking for. If you are looking to be out and about running all over the Black Hills this is not the cabin for you in my opinion. My husband and I have have been to the hills many time so this special place gave us our own little piece of heaven for a few days. We really enjoyed the hot tub with giant snowflakes falling, sitting inside and out watching the canyon change with the movement of the sun throughout the day, having the wind and the birds being the only sound you hear. The cabin is well equipped and you should definitely plan to prepare meals, partly because this cabin is not close to restaurants and partly because you will not want to leave. This is a very special rental indeed

Peaceful, Private, Perfect

Extremely beautiful setting that automatically makes you feel relaxed! Extremely clean and gorgeous decor and furnishings. The communication between the owner and us was fantastic... Check in process very easy. You will not want to leave this little slice of heaven so make sure you bring all your provisions in with you. We spent mornings with coffee on the deck and spent evenings with wine in the same place :) Most evenings were spent grilling with our friends and making use of the hot tub overlooking the valley below. We did make a couple day trips into Custer and Hot Springs and this cabin is situated so close to so many fun places to go and shop, or eat, or enjoy some live music. We had six adults in the cabin and had no problems with space. The stairs up to the loft are pretty steep so that is something to consider when choosing who sleeps where. We've been here twice now and am looking forward to another return visit. You seriously could not ask for anything more!

Beyond words. A truly amazing South Dakota experience

We just got home, from our 9 day stay at the Red Canyon Cabin and it was amazing. I’m not sure who was more excited to be there, my wife and I or our high school age daughters. Their initial reaction was simply, “Wow”...and then silence. Lori was a fantastic communicator and never tired of our constant questions in the months prior to our visit. This was our second visit to the Black Hills, so we had done most of the touristy stuff and enjoyed hanging back at the cabin. As amazing as the picture are they do not do the views or the cabin justice. It is truly a very unique property and we are very grateful of Lori sharing it with us. We did one day trip to Keystone, and another to Sylvan Lake for a hike on Sunday Gulch trail. While at the cabin we did see the mule deer in the field to the North, Buffalo in the neighbors field as you come in. The birds playing along the canyon edge are a constant source of entertainment. I hiked down to the canyon below twice, and it quite an experience with refreshing untouched views of nature it’s awesome views of the cabin from below. The most rewarding hike was definitely the ridgeline to the west. If you follow out towards the logging trail west of the cabin you can cut through the woods up at the northern end of the ridge. There are a few steeper sections (about like climbing up 3 separate sledding hills from home), but much of the ridge is open prairie with views to the East, South and West. Amazing. Once out to the tip you can see the cabin in the distance. The hotub was amazing for after hikes and enjoying the view. The cabin is very comfortable and well stocked with plates, cookware, towels, etc. we bought gallon jugs of water from the Family Dollar in Custer. We brought a lot of food from home, and purchased perishables at Walmart in Rapid City on the way in. This cabin is very remote and highly recommend you come prepared as “popping out” for a coffee or gallon of milk will be a 90 minute round trip, that could be better spent on the deck. Kitchen table was fantastic for enjoying the views and playing board games. We wound down after dinner each night by taking a short walk up the lane to the gate, and usually got to see 2 mule deer each evening. If you are on the fence if you should do this, my advice, is do it. It is truly a bucket list vacation.

What a beautiful location. We enjoyed meandering around the property and hiking to the bottom of the canyon several times. The views are just spectacular, sunrise to sunset. Tall timbers, whispering winds, owls hooting goodnight, and coyote howls greeting us in the morning. Solitude at it's finest. Thanks for sharing your piece of nature with us. We didn't want to leave, and we will be back!

About the host

Hosted by Lori Lieberman

Host profile image
Owner Lori Lieberman I am a Rapid City, SD native. My mother and her family are from the area and lived on the edge of the Badlands. Back in the mid-'90s, I purchased the land the cabin sits on and the surrounding 3,000+ acres from the ranchers who had the property in their families for over 100 years. We put almost all the land into two conservation wildlife developments with a very limited number of home sites and strong covenants to protect the land and property owners' privacy and views. I built the cabin in 1996 and for many years used it as my personal cabin. I now live in Minneapolis and get back to the Black Hills about three times a year, mainly to do garden and maintenance projects! This portion of Red Canyon is dramatic and wild with 200+ vertical red rock cliffs and a canyon floor inaccessible to vehicles. The canyon is pristine. Very few people have ever had access to it. No one has plowed or even lived here except for the Native Americans who set up their teepees at the bottom. (Teepee rings sometimes appear in the Spring grass on the canyon bottom directly below the cabin.) I love the Black Hills, and Red Canyon, and am blessed to be able to share them with guests who stay with us.

Why they chose this property

The cabin sits on 110 private acres. It is located on the rim of Red Canyon, South Dakota's most historic canyon with unparalleled views, privacy, and diverse wildlife ranging from elk to pronghorn to mountain lions.

What makes this property unique

The cabin sits on the edge of a canyon cliff on a promontory providing views of the bottom below, the canyon to the east, south, and west, and the cliffs on the south side of the canyon. All renters say the pictures do not do it justice. Light pollution is virtually non-existent. One of the best places on the planet to see the milky way.
