About this property
At The Edge Of Solitude Where Stars Are Bright And The Air Is Fresh
Fortunately, some of the most beautiful places on earth can be experienced without the cost and responsibility of actually owning them. Red Canyon Ranch in the Black Hills is no exception. Situated high atop the Black Hills historic red-limestone and sandstone canyon, the location of the original route into the Hills for both Native Americans and the white settlers that followed, Red Canyon Ranch is a monument to the cowboy lifestyle, with elements of luxury and style that most cowboys have probably never seen. The cabin is a lodge-pole pine dwelling, in the tradition of an aged lodge. The cabin sits on 110 private acres and offers full views of Red Canyon from three sides, rustic floors and cabinetry with natural dry-stack, slate fireplace in the living room, and master bedroom, and sleeping accommodations for 6 people. An outdoor hot tub that nearly floats above the canyon’s edge makes soaking under the stars a life time memory.
On a clear day, Red Canyon offers extraordinary views to its east, where sheer red walls accentuate the awesome powers that went into its creation, as well as the intricacies of its meandering path. To the south, across the canyon, the dense clustering of centuries-old Ponderosa pine easily explains how the area came to be known as the “Black” Hills . To the west, the canyon continues with steep rock walls, dramatic outcroppings and a long distance view to Wyoming.
You'll Love Our Neighbors: Red Canyon is home to one of the most diverse wildlife populations in the Black Hills. Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Eagles, Mountain Lions, Bobcats and Turkeys.
Explore The Best Part Of The Black Hills: The southern Black Hills holds something for everyone and every taste. Nestled among the rolling hills are quaint towns offering shopping, dining, and tourist attractions that could easily fill your day with smiles. The area also hosts some of the country’s most beautiful parks and well-known monuments, all within a short and scenic drive from each other.
At the Founder's Cabin, you'll have thousands of acres to explore whether hiking or horseback riding across this historic property.

The cabin at the edge of solitude where the air is fresh and the stars are bright surpassed our wildest dreams. It was absolutely gorgeous! The gardens, the canyon, the hot tub, the wildlife, the beautiful artwork in the cabin, and so very comfortable and clean. The kitchen was outfitted with pretty much everything you need. Only thing to be aware of is that Custer and a grocery store is about 45 minutes away, but if you plan ahead it's not a problem. And our hosts were FABULOUS! Very responsive and helpful. Our vacation was a delight and wished we could have stayed longer.
This property is truly special and an incredible opportunity to have serenity. The hot tub at the edge of the canyon is so unique and special. The grilling station, picnic table, and deck are all first class. The home has been stocked with all of the necessary amenities. The dining room table is wonderful to enjoy the view while enjoying a meal. The stars on a clear night fill the sky with very little distractions. Would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys nature, privacy, and doesn't mind a long ride on a dirt road.
Beautiful view. My husband grew up in the hills and had never seen a view like this one. Cabin stocked well and clean.

Thank you for your review. I also grew up in the Black Hills and did not know this huge canyon existed!
In the 1990's we purchased the land from a rancher. Very few humans have ever seen this canyon.
We are so blessed to be the steward of this beautiful spot with such amazing views.

Our group really enjoyed staying at Lori’s cabin. You are literally away from it all at this remote cabin. The cabin is very well stocked, and uniquely decorated. Everyday, I was seeing some other detail that made me smile. The views from the cabin are outstanding as you are right at the edge of the canyon. We enjoyed the hot tub and grilled on the high quality outdoor grill. Lori was very responsive answering our questions. The weather was nice enough for us to hike down into the canyon following the supplied directions. I highly recommend staying here!
Cabin was everything we had hoped it would be. The view of the canyon through the big windows were awesome. The stars seemed extra bright out there, especially from the hot tub! The only minor point is the size of the bathroom. It was a little tight for two people. Other than that, we will definitely stay here again!
The Edge of Solitude is a beautiful cabin with an amazing view. It is a perfect place to stay for peace and solitude. It's like a little piece of Heaven. We enjoyed our stay immensely!
The cabin location was amazing and well maintained inside and outside. It was private and the views were gorgeous. Would definitely stay again. Hosts were responsive and had good communication.
Our stay here was absolutely amazing! The cabin was clean and cozy. This well taken property offers unbelievable views. The hot tub was very clean and perfectly placed as well! Would recommend to anyone!
11/10 easily! The view here is a million dollar view! The host is more than accommodating, the cabin was so clean and fully stocked. You can tell this place is cared for andoved for by the owners. The view from the hot tub at sunset was to die for. It's got a rustic cabin feel, yet all modern amenities.
The cabin was spectacular and the view was amazing. Once in a lifetime experience. It was further off the main road than we anticipated, but we were not familiar at all with the area.
If you are looking for beauty & serenity this is the perfect place. The location and view’s couldn’t be more beautiful. The cabin is laid out quite well & offered everything we needed. We found it was convenient for our day trip adventures and we loved the birds.
This property is AMAZING! It is a beautiful home with stunning scenery, incredible views, and extremely peaceful. The sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking. Our host made us feel like valued guests --- truly a trip of a lifetime! Grateful guests.....Jo and Chris
What a beautiful location. We enjoyed meandering around the property and hiking to the bottom of the canyon several times. The views are just spectacular, sunrise to sunset. Tall timbers, whispering winds, owls hooting goodnight, and coyote howls greeting us in the morning. Solitude at it's finest. Thanks for sharing your piece of nature with us. We didn't want to leave, and we will be back!
We booked it for my in laws anniversary getaway. They LOVED it! Perfect location to sneak away for some peace and quiet.

Hi Elizabeth
What a nice present to give your in-laws. We are very happy they loved their stay! I was at the cabin the week before, and the canyon was spectacular. The Black Hills are getting some nice rains, and the grass is so green.
Lori
My sister and I stayed here for 3 glorious nights. Got up to see the sunrise and hear nature wake up each morning and have tea on the deck. The gardens were really nice and the smell of sage all around the property. The views were breathtaking, the cabin had all the modern conveniences, the master bed was incredibly comfortable. We’ve already talked about coming back!!
Beautiful canyon home with breathtaking views. House was clean and well stocked and very comfortable. Sitting on the porch was extremely relaxing. Our host was very helpful and quick to respond to any questions we had.

I am a Rapid City, SD native. My mother and her family are from the area and lived on the edge of the Badlands. Back in the mid-'90s, I purchased the land the cabin sits on and the surrounding 3,000+ acres from the ranchers who had the property in their families for over 100 years. We put almost all the land into two conservation wildlife developments with a very limited number of home sites and strong covenants to protect the land and property owners' privacy and views. I built the cabin in 1996 and for many years used it as my personal cabin. I now live in Minneapolis and get back to the Black Hills about three times a year, mainly to do garden and maintenance projects!
This portion of Red Canyon is dramatic and wild with 200+ vertical red rock cliffs and a canyon floor inaccessible to vehicles. The canyon is pristine. Very few people have ever had access to it. No one has plowed or even lived here except for the Native Americans who set up their teepees at the bottom. (Teepee rings sometimes appear in the Spring grass on the canyon bottom directly below the cabin.)
I love the Black Hills, and Red Canyon, and am blessed to be able to share them with guests who stay with us.
Why they chose this property
The cabin sits on 110 private acres. It is located on the rim of Red Canyon, South Dakota's most historic canyon with unparalleled views, privacy, and diverse wildlife ranging from elk to pronghorn to mountain lions.
What makes this property unique
The cabin sits on the edge of a canyon cliff on a promontory providing views of the bottom below, the canyon to the east, south, and west, and the cliffs on the south side of the canyon. All renters say the pictures do not do it justice.
Light pollution is virtually non-existent. One of the best places on the planet to see the milky way.
