A romantic seaside getaway with 360 feet of private ocean frontage, it enjoys an ideal vacation getaway location in the unspoiled community of Summerville Centre on the shore of Port Mouton Bay. To the south-east are the open Atlantic and Port Mouton Island. A few minutes walk to the west lies the mile-long sandy beach of Summerville Provincial Park and the delectable Quarterdeck Grill seafood restaurant. To the south, across the bay, historic lighthouses, fishing boats and more sandy beaches await. If you are looking for the sights and sounds of the ocean right at your door, without giving up 'the comforts of home' this premium destination is one of the best on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
Within Walking Distance: Start your day on the deck overlooking the waves. It spans the full width of the house with 350 sq feet fully enclosed, insulated and heated for year round use. Facing south west, it gets lots of sun even in winter. Retractable electrically operated awnings together with the latest in mini-split air-conditioning technology keep the house cool and provide welcome shade during the hotter days of summer. After breakfast the sandy mile-long beach of Summerville Provincial Park is a six minute walk away. Here, aside from having a leisurely stroll on the sand, you may rent a kayak or surfboard then enjoy one of the 'Taste of Nova Scotia' featured restaurants - the popular Quarterdeck Grill. At the far end of the beach, the Broad River presents a hiking opportunity: it is crossed by a trestle bridge of the abandoned Halifax to Yarmouth railway, which is now maintained as a trail through rugged, forested countryside.
If you enjoy clambering over rocks, that is also a great way to explore the immediate shoreline on which the house is located.
A stay at Ocean Surf Cottage can include dining at White Point Beach Resort (5mins drive away) as the Resort's dining room and lounge are open to the public, and well worth a visit, no to mention their on-site therapeutic massage services.
Within a Fifteen Minute Drive: Head south down Hwy 103 through Port Mouton to one of Nova Scotia's finest beaches: Carter's Beach - a series of three crescent shaped beaches with offshore islands reminiscent of the Caribbean (minus the palm trees of course). If you like quiet and natural, this is it, though it has become a favorite stopover for sailboats and the occasional tall ship. Head east 5 minutes along the Lighthouse route and you'll find White Point Golf Club. Continue to the Town of Liverpool, one of the oldest towns in the Province. Noted for its colorful maritime history, it is a treasure trove of historic homes, many of which date back to when captains of industry and of the sea vied for the most impressive homes. One of them is now a fascinating museum of local history.
Within a Forty-five Minute Drive: To the south (a twenty-minute drive) is the wild rocky coastline and surrounding natural splendour of the Seaside Adjunct of Kejimkujik National Preserve and its seal colonies. A 'must sea'. In the opposite direction, the Town of Bridgewater sits on the LaHave River. There are wonderful scenic drives on both sides of the river down to the sea, from where you can follow the coast by road. Have lunch at the LaHave Bakery where they bake their own breads and pastries and continue on to the LaHave Islands, Crescent Beach and Petite Riviere. Just beyond Bridgewater are quaint Mahone Bay and Unesco World Heritage sight, Lunenburg. The latter is home to the Bluenose a beautiful tall ship in port for daily excursions.

Absolutely Breathtaking!!
Absolutely breathtaking. The weather was 17+ degrees (Celsius, about 65F) in October and we were surrounded by incredible views. We were looking for a relaxing getaway and that is exactly what we received. The cottage is beautiful and had everything we needed. Thanks for sharing your piece of paradise. Thank-you Nicola and Paul. It's great to be right on the ocean. Regardless of the time of year, and the weather, it is always a treat. We get so upset if we are away and miss a storm.
We had one of the most enjoyable vacations of all time. The location and fantastic accommodation really could not have been better. This property fully lives up to its claim. It is absolutely beautiful and incredibly peaceful. The accommodation was of a 5 star quality. This property is extremely well maintained and was a joy to stay at. Many many thanks!!! We look forward to renting this property again.

Perfect, private, waterfront getaway.
This cottage in Summerville Centre is pretty remarkable. If you are looking for a private getaway, in a truly unique setting, you'd be hard pressed to do better than this location. "On the water" is no exaggeration. At high tide, it's just a few feet away, gently lapping at the rocks, which line the shore. The deck, fire pit, grill, and overall landscaping just make for a beautiful surrounding. And you have zero visible neighbors, so it really does feel like you're all alone. There is a decent clam shack a mile up the road in one direction, and a fine seafood restaurant an easy walk in the other. And groceries 12 minutes away in Liverpool.
We only had two full days, sadly, so we weren't able to take advantage of the gorgeous beaches a short walk away, but we'll be sure to on our next visit, which we are already planning.
And the cottage itself is in great shape, and very comfortable. The kitchen has everything one needs.
Highly recommended!

Jeff's lovely house is beautiful, very clean and comfortable. The views are stunning as is the quiet and calm of the property where this house is built on. The fire pit is a wonderful addition for gazing at stars outside as you hear the waves. Jeff is a wonderful host, and very helpful & kind...

Thank-you Prema. We'd love to have you back.
Speaking of the stars, you have reminded me to let fans of dark nights know how beautifully located the cottage is for star-gazing - far enough from light pollution to make clear, moonless nights, particularly good. Try our telescope!

Perfection!
This property is everything the posting describes and more!. The outdoor space is amazing:
we sipped our morning coffee on the deck watching comorants diving for their breakfast, enjoyed afternoons under the shade of the awnings, and spent evenings by the firepit listening to the surf. Inside the house is very spacious and comfortable, with a variety of well-appointed eating, social and relaxing areas. The beds were very comfortable, with quality linens and pillows. There were so many thoughtful touches - like pantry items, initial paper supplies, stacks of soft towels, plenty of firewood. The location is great - very private, easy walking distance to the gorgeous Summerville beach, and a mid-point for visits to Halifax, Digby and Yarmouth - as well as many lovely points along Nova Scotia's south shore. The owner Jeff was extremely easy to work with, and providing great information and prompt responses. Thank you - we could not have asked for a better place for our getaway!

Thank-you so much Kimberly. We moved 1200 miles from Ontario to live in this wonderful location. Most summers we make it available for three to five weeks (last year being a year off). If we ever do start to take it for granted, however, we can always read reviews like yours to snap us out of it. Cheers!

Loved it!
This house was an outstanding scene, with the views of the sea and the landscaping to explore. We enjoyed the patio with the yellow chairs, the seats under the trees, and we made a fire very night in the fire place outside.
We also enjoyed the house itself. With all the seating arrangements, we were able to take in all the views from inside the house. While we were here we also visited Peggys Cove among other interesting places. We found Ocean Surf Cottage to be the perfect place for us to meet and visit with our family here, and we hope to return next year.

Simply Awesome
When you first enter the house you are taken in by the spectacular ocean view through each of the windows and sliders facing the ocean. It's the type of view where you can just sit and take it in all day.
The house is nicely furnished, well maintained and comes with everything you would need for a comfortable stay. At night relaxing on the enclosed porch with the sliders open and listening to the waves is the perfect end to each day. If your looking for a place to get away, unplug and relax look no further.
One of the great things about the area is how un-touresty it is. No crowds, no traffic, no souvenir shops.
A nice and useful touch that the owner Jeff provided was a list of things to see/do in the area. This was very helpful in deciding a days activities. The nearby beaches (Carter's and the Kejimkujik Seaside Park) are a great afternoon activity. If you go to Kejimkujik bring a jacket (even if its 80 degrees out), it is a spectacular beach.
We have already recommended this to friends and hopefully we'll have a chance to visit again some day.

Thanks Jeff. Something else for visitors to keep in mind: this summer we got our ferry service back - between Portland, Maine and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. You can exchange ten hours of (not-unscenic) driving for a mini-cruise on the brand new "Nova Star" - casino, multiple restaurants, ocean-view cabins etc. Like you need another reason to visit our unspoiled shores. Idea for a tee-shirt design: "I went to Nova Scotia and couldn't find a tee-shirt shop". Cheers!

Excellent experience!
It's a rare experience when the description in an advertisement is a 100% match to what you get; but that was exactly the case with Ocean Surf Cottage. We were looking for a quiet place to relax by the sea, that had all of the comforts of home, and that was what we got. The cottage is clean, beautifully appointed, spacious, and at such a great distance from our neighbours that it seemed at times as though we were the only ones around. It was a perfect spot for exploring the southern coast of Nova Scotia, from Liverpool through to Annapolis Royal. Jeff, the owner, was always accessible and consistently helpful and pleasant. We really can't say enough about how satisfying the whole experience was, including walks on Somerville Beach and the incredible food at the nearby Quarter Deck. When next down in that part of the province, we hope it will be available again.

Refreshing Retreat
My wife and I rented this property and invited a grade school friend and his wife to join us. Jeff's directions were spot on and the tip about the driveway correct especially if driving a truck.
We had threee amazing days and the breeze off the ocean was perfect. The awnings were very suited for the house and make the outdoor experience in the high temperatures a must. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to enjoy your stay.
Now the best part of the house the sun room. No hotel deck or private cottage owned by a coorporation will ever in the area give that room a run for its money. It will become your social haven for eating, drinking, laughing and lounging when not on the deck using the BBQ. You just want to spend all your time in and out of there coupled with the outside.
The beach is very close by, but i will say avoid a walk to it for the simple reason that there is almost no shoudler on the road to walk and the speed limit is 60 or 70 around there which most seem to drive. We will definetly try and stay again. Jeffs home is worth every penny. Thanks Bill and Paula

Response from VrboOwner on 26 June 2023
Thanks Paula and Bill. Turning a chunk of our outdoor deck into an enclosed sun-room worked out great. We also appreciate having the beach, and its neighboring Quarterdeck Grill and Bistro, so close by. Our outings in that direction - with or without the pooch - are preferably on foot (the 60kph speed limit equates to about 35mph). If our walk is to the Grill for dinner (highly recommended by the way), we particularly enjoy the stroll back: no worries about driving after that glass of wine or two (or three). Always walk on the left and save the texting for later. Cheers!

Special places leave bookmarks in one’s book of memories.
Ocean Surf Cottage is one such place.
Unique in its location with a view seldom found.
What makes it stand out is the outstanding rock landscaping done to the exterior of the house that hugs and shoulders the wave line. Seldom could you find a location fit for a movie scene such as this. Placing a concrete statue of a surfer searching for a wave looking into the horizon, in the right spot dramatizes the Imax vision concept of this unit. You could simply spend hours listening to the waves pounding the rocks on the patio grilling you seafood.
The house in itself has been modified from its original design embracing the patio within a glass cladding to embrace the outside placing the inside out into the scene. Fit with all that you need, you could spend weeks without wishing to leave short of the need for groceries that could be brought in with a 10 minute drive to Liverpool. With all necessities provided and air-conditioning for the summer the owners have provided for your rest and calm.
Halifax is a 2 hour drive away so if the intention is to be near a downtown, this is not the place. However, this is the place to tear you off the hectic daily routine into a restful relaxing soul nourishing locale. With sand beaches, park trails nearby. It is a good location for outdoor activities with 1-2-3 hour excursions to neighbouring little coves and villages.
A highly recommended unit for those desiring rest and relaxation.

There are a great many excellent vacation options within Canada's Maritime Provinces and lots to choose from in accommodations. We take pride in being a repeat destination for some of those making, perhaps the best-informed choices for Atlantic Canadian holidays: the people who live here already. We are looking forward to welcoming Bonnie and Hugh back to Ocean Surf Cottage come August,

Great house, even better location!
This is a wonderful house, immaculate, roomy, very nice kitchen and living areas, the porch is fantastic and the deck is great too. The location really sets it apart. We stayed here in October when it was starting to get just a little chilly. During the day we'd eat breakfast on the porch or lunch on the deck before heading out to sight see. None of the pictures do the place justice, on a sunny day it is absolutely breathtaking. At night we sat in the comfy chairs on the porch, opened a few of the many sliding doors to let the sound of the water in, poured ourselves a drink or hot chocolate, and watched the lighthouses blink on the distant shores. Even when the water was calm and just gently lapping on the shore you could hear the sound with a few doors cracked open, it was as relaxing a spot as I've ever visited. Once you head out, wherever you are along the coast, when its time for dinner just find the nearest town and you are sure to also find a seafood restaurant with a deck overlooking the water. The home itself is very well decorated and they provided a comprehensive list of local towns, attractions, and insights you could only get from a local resident. This was a great place and we would definitely stay here again if we are fortunate enough to return to Nova Scotia.

It is always rewarding to hear how much our visitors enjoy their time at Ocean Surf Cottage as they explore the beautiful Nova Scotia coast. It is also true that pictures only capture a snippet of the spectacular vista that awaits us each morning we awake and look outside. On the bright side , that means no-one should be disappointed.

Amazing Location and Fantastic Property
An absolutely unbeatable location RIGHT on the beach! Fantastically equipped, spotlessly clean, and well-maintained property with two big and comfy beds. Jeff provides all the information you need, is easy to get hold of, will help you out with anything, and is just fantastic to deal with. BBQ dinners on the deck right next to the ocean is a must every night you don't feel like eating out.
Great location for walking, relaxing, and serves as a great base for exploring the south coast. If the weather plays ball there's plenty of opportunity for surfing at Summerville Centre or head up and around Western Head. Don't think about it, just contact Jeff, book and then go and have a fantastic time.

Wow. Great review. Thank-you.
Ocean Surf Cottage was our first Nova Scotia home - we uprooted and moved 1200 miles for the opportunity to live here on the ocean. Being only a 15 minute drive from our house in town, the cottage is always ready for us. It remains as well furnished and equipped (minus the personal stuff) as it always was. Right down to the egg cups, garlic press and all those wine glasses.
The Cottage gives visitors the opportunity to experience what it is like living on the ocean in an unspoiled natural setting. Judging by this, and previous comments, they seem to like it.

Hard to leave.....
It wasn't easy leaving this cottage at the end of a much-too-short week. Frankly, it wasn't easy even leaving the deck lounge chairs when necessary! :) We never expected such a large, private and quiet site; that was a VERY pleasant surprise. Ocean on one side and trees/hedges all around pretty much assure total privacy. Lots of light and sunshine as the cottage faces south.
The cottage is extremely well stocked with many spices, condiments, kitchenware, books, mags, local info, linens, towels and even terry robes. Laptops work well outside on the deck. Summerville beach is a very nice sandy beach that's about a 10 min walk away.
Sleeping with the sounds and sight of the ocean so near was extraordinary...this is a very special place we hope to return to.
Thanks for the opportunity to share this wonderful spot!

Great Vacation Home and Location
My husband and I just returned from spending a week at Ocean Surf Cottage. We have not had such a restful vacation in a long time. We enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the waves, a seal play, a dolphin swimming by, the sailboats coming in for the night etc. The cottage was great with everything you would need provided. We also made use of the flyers, brochures for the area that were available. Jeff recommended 2 restaurants close by and they were also excellent. We played golf on the Atlantic shores at a nearby resort. Again we could not have asked for a better home, location or trip :)

A Great Start to our Trip
> We arrived back in NC yesterday afternoon. Five weeks is a long time to be on a motorcycle, but we had a great time. Our time at your home on the ocean was a great beginning and we were sorry to leave. We're so glad the railings were down, we viewed a whale, several seals and enjoyed the ocean so much better without the railings. We certainly appreciated the garage for the bikes. We spend 2 additional weeks in Nova Scotia and PEI.I know that we will never return to your home, (this was a vacation on our 'bucket list") but we have lots of great memories. We absolutely loved your beautiful home – it takes maximum advantage of the stunning, natural surroundings and you obviously put a lot of love and great energy into your place. Our daughter is 22 months old and she was asleep when we arrived, when she woke up, all she could say was “wow” as she ran from room to room, looking out the sliding doors. Thank-you for sharing this spectacular home with our family. The children (aged 9 and 12) enjoyed climbing the rocks during low tide and listening to the surf. This was our second time in NOVA SCOTIA and by far our most relaxing. The accommodations were wonderful.
About the host
Hosted by Jeffrey Percy
Ocean Surf Cottage is owned by a retired couple who moved to Nova Scotia from Ontario after careers in the business, education and civil service fields. We are now enjoying life in an unhurried, tranquil part of the world that is very close to nature.
Why they chose this property
We were on vacation in Nova Scotia and just happened upon this oceanfront property which was on the market. It was only after buying it that we discovered its wonderful surroundings - miles of empty and near empty beaches, hiking trails, and the ever-changing ocean right on the doorstep. Not to mention endless interesting drives on twisty roads to scenic area attractions.
