Outstanding location and very well equipped home. Everything you need to enjoy an effortless stay! Fireplace well stocked, hot tub easy use, well supplied linens. Extremely comfortable beds! Views are incredible!
This is the best house rental my husband and I have had. This house has everything to make your vacation special. If you think it, they, have it. The house is not only extremely well equipped it is very clean. Carla and Chris are easy to work with and we will definitely stay there again. If you want to go to Harsen Island do your best to book this property! 5 Stars!!!
The owners were very responsive to all of my questions. The house was perfect! The location was perfect. We had two families and seven kids staying in the home, the bunk room was perfect for that. Loved all of the amenities. We will definitely stay again!
We stayed here with my father and mother in law along with my husband and 4 kids (3, 5, 7,10). We booked it for a 3 night getaway during spring break to view the freighters and it did not disappoint. It felt like the freighters were on top of us. The kids and my father in law stalked the marine app and would yell and run outside whenever a freighter was coming past us. To quote my father in law - this would never get old. The house was perfect - smart TVs in all rooms, amazing bunkroom with individual lights and charging stations, plenty of space, large kitchen and comfy electric fireplace for the cool days. We used the hot tub and tried our luck at fishing in the canal and river. Got takeout from two restaurants on the island and cooked the rest of our meals. The entire family loved it!
Loved the house and the layout with all the bunks in one room. Spacious throughout. Parking is a little tight with boat trailers but for the average renter it would be perfect.
I was fortunate enough to find this location on VRBO to rent for my bachelor party weekend. Everything was wonderful! Carla and her husband have an amazing rental property that’s extremely well kept and in such an amazing location. Being right on the St. Clair River/Lake St. Clair made for some great fishing and scenery. I would highly recommend this location when considering a spot to rent for whatever the occasion may be.
The house was amazing. It’s a lot bigger than it looks and it had a lot of space. The bunk room was a bit with the kids as they loved making forts in that room. The side beach outside was awesome as it was a fun place to float and cool off. The neighbors were friendly and we had no problem with them. The boat docking could be better or update but it worked out. Overall, I would definitely stay here again with the family!
The house was very comfortable and a great place to stay. The kitchen was well stocked with cookware and even an assortment of spices. The outdoor area included furniture and the fire pit was a nice place to sit and watch the freighters go by. If you plan to bring a boat taller than 7 feet from the water line, have a backup plan for docking as water levels change from year to year. But Carla was a great host and was quick to answer any questions and very accommodating. We had a great vacation. Thanks again for hosting us.
We always try and rent a house on the water for a family summer vacation!! Captain’s Lookout was truly one of the best!! Pictures do not do it justice!! Beautiful home and very comfortable!! We did have a severe storm one evening and lost power!! To our delight in less than 3mins the whole house generator kicked in!! We would HIGHLY recommend this property! Also if we had any questions or issues (had no issues) response was super!!!
Putting together a last-minute family vacation when we found the Captain's Lookout. We couldn't have asked for a better place. It was well-appointed, spacious, with scenic views (especially for those of us who enjoy freighter activity along the river!), and many comfortable places to just "be present" with one another. The grandchildren had great success with their fishing (the prize being a 5lb bass) and enjoyed swimming right next to the house. Our daughter's dog was welcomed as well, playing and swimming with the kids. Really a good time for all.
There was a problem at first with a/c, but Carla and Chris' personal response and quick actions made sure the issue was addressed and taken care of without delay. They were quick with information to answer questions and went out of their way to ensure our time there was memorable and problem-free. They really are great hosts, with much to offer their guests. We're looking forward to going back next year!

About the host
Hosted by Carla Longerbeam
My husband Chris and I have been married for 7 years and we are a blended family with 4 kids (ages 13, 10, 6, and 5). We have started a small business specializing in making amazing memories and housing opportunities available to other families. We have a 36' RV that we also rent out for people to take cross-country. We buy and flip starter homes for new families. Finally, we also have several rental houses that we rent out long term. The only thing that was missing was a vacation home that families could rent out short term and enjoy all the amazing nature that Michigan has to offer. We found our home on Harsens Island a year ago and have loved sharing it with people from all over Michigan and all over the country since then.
Why they chose this property
We had never been to Harsens Island before and went to visit a home for sale on whim. The proximity to Detroit with the feel being up north was instantly appealing to us. Harsens Island is a very unique place with a ton to offer. The summer is filled with water fun and festivals and the fall and spring are a mecca for fishing and hunting. Winter offers a whole different experience to just relax and enjoy the freighters pass by. The location of this house offers a ton of privacy and our own little beach area as well. We loved that it was big enough for a few families to share the space and still felt like a cottage by the river. We hope your family enjoys it as much as we do.
What makes this property unique

We even have a boat well where you can tie up your own fishing or rec boat too.
