Perfect Family Getaway

Wonderful property out of the way of the main hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor. Travel to mainstays are within 45-55 minutes. Loved the pond - plenty of time kaiaking and hanging with the ducks in the area. No shortage of memories to be made here - cannot recommend enough!

Secluded beauty

This home is secluded,. If you're looking for conveniences in proximity, this location isn't for you. Closest town with stores and restaurants is Ellsworth, about 24 miles away. Bar Harbor and Acadia, 40 minutes away. However, the home is light and airy, clean and has plenty to do there. There's a game room and kayaks for the pond, which is right in the back yard and beautiful! My husband and I stayed a week and split our time between Bar Harbor and Acadia, and just staying at the house. We loved it and hope to go back again!

Excellent Getaway with everything you need!

The Loon house was an excellent getaway and an excellent vacation. We had everything we needed! Beautiful, huge pond filled with fish, a peddle boat, several kayaks, a great walkoff dock. The swimming was great. The water temp in July was fantastic! Pristine area. Very quiet but only 45 mins from Bar Harbor and about 50 mins from Bangor. Ideal for our family!

Maine escape

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The location of the house is perfect. The pond is wonderful, the area is quiet, and there’s lot of space outdoors to spread out and enjoy. The living area inside is on the small side but the bedrooms and screened porch are all good size.

Great place for families to stay!

Well maintained property with great extras like Wi-Fi and jacuzzi tub. The kids enjoyed running on the lawn and playing on the dock. They also enjoyed the game room and dollhouse. Everyone liked being able to kayak out onto the pond. Wonderfully relaxing week - wish we had more time to spend there!

Hands down 5 star!! We have never stayed at the same VRBO twice but when we come back to Maine, I will be staying here again. Great location, had all the amenities we needed, and very clean. The boys loved the fishing. They didn't even want to leave and go to Acadia! If you are looking for a nice quiet retreat this is it.

Great family vacation camp

We loved our stay here. The weather was perfect, although the mosquitoes will carry you away. They can’t control that though. Having the screened in porch was awesome as we could enjoy being outside. Convenient to so many things. If you are traveling with a family this is the place to stay.

Relaxing place

The house is very big with nice-sized living room, master bedroom, kitchen and reasonable accommodations for additional guests upstairs. Many thoughtful touches, for example a heating fan in the bath. Very few mosquitoes (unusual for the area). No motorized boats on the lake. The lake is not huge but pretty suitable for swimming. Overall, a wonderful place

Memories were definitely made here

This property is so relaxing and tranquil that you'll never want to leave. The house was clean and comfortable with all the modern amenities as well as some welcomed additions like the ping pong table and air hockey table. We saw a bald eagle everyday and sitting down on the dock was so relaxing; especially in the morning when the loons were the most active. My husband enjoyed paddling out to the middle of the pond to do some fishing. He caught lots of bass. The weather wasn’t the greatest when we stayed (obviously not the owner’s fault), but we were able to make the best of it and still enjoyed our stay very much. I highly recommend this hidden gem.

Needed less of Lee

Property, neat, had everything you could possibly need, just as advertised. Heard Loons at nite, pond is peaceful and pretty. If you want to cook Lob stah-well you in right place! Perfect pot, many different “shell crackers” we loved it. Unfortunately hurricane Lee shut down our trip early-only was to get out was to leave Thirsday. This vrbo restored our faith in the company as a whole. The last few we rented had issues. None whatsoever here. Beds comfy, plenty o hot water. Huge kitchen, porch awesome for morning coffee. Did Arcadia, Bar Harbor, Canada including St. Andrews which was charming! Ate nothing but seafood for five days! Still didn’t try it all! This is a top notch place for families, great for me and wife who are both in 60’s too.

Great location

First time being on a private pond and it was great. With limited access, the people in the houses on the pond get it mostly to themselves. That said, we were surprised when a sea plane landed on Sunday - how exciting! The fishermen among us caught lots of sunfish and a perch off the dock, and many more large perch, smallmouth bass, and even a largemouth from the kayak supplied with the house. We enjoyed using the paddleboat too. Morning walks down the dirt road past the ripe blueberry fields were very tranquil. It is Maine, there are bugs outside, bring high-DEET bug spray. The screened porch provided a mostly outdoor and mostly bug free compromise. Firepit was great - first fire was built and ready to light. Inside, fresh flowers on the table when we arrived and everything clean. Great water pressure in the showers. It was good to see how the owner noted upgrades to the property over the years in their coffee table notebook showing continuous improvements. We had a little trouble with the clothes dryer, but the owner was responsive. I could see a few more items added to the upgrade list soon such as retiring at least one of the twin mattresses and maybe the well-used but still functional gas grill. The other nice thing about the location is it makes a great jumping off point for day trips. We went to Acadia and Bar Harbor twice, and even up to St. Andrews in New Brunswick (remember you need passports to cross into Canada now).

peaceful location

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Eastbrook and surrounding area. We hiked some new trails in Acadia walked the road to the beach and a ways further. Enjoyed the deck for dining during the warmer days. That all made the stay a 4/5. What I will say is that it got very cold and we had to figure out how to turn on the stove and heater (turned off before leaving) would have been nice had instructions been included. The entire first floor could use a really good deep cleaning. There was a film of grease on everything in the kitchen. I cleaned the stovetop before using it! It is a family summer home and it is reasonable that there might be some use signs but the floors need mopping and grout cleaning (some grout is actually coming up). We are not fussy people but the microwave was dirty and we did not use it or clean it. The carpet in the master bedroom had big blackish footprints on it which made it look dirtier than it was, again cleaning. Its a lovely spot and hopefully whoever is cleaning after guests will be encouraged to do a somewhat more inclusive job. We loved our time there however and were very thankful for the location and peace and serenity. The Loons in the mornings were a delight. Thank You Goldmans!

Fantastic vacation spot especially for those with kids

True to/better than the pictures. This place was fantastic and more of a home than a traditional "camp". Because the HomeAway/VRBO app is the absolute worst, we didn't know we needed a code for the key but Mitch was extremely responsive and helpful. While the house is close to the road, it had barely any traffic the entire week we were there (probably because there seem to only be a few more camps on this side of the lake that are beyond the rental). Because of the lack of rain, the lake is a little shallow off the dock (so definitely no adult jumping in) but it was great for our dog (and would be great for young kids). We used both the grill and the kitchen and they were fine (we do always bring our own knifes so I can't speak to that component). Enough plates and utensils to have my large, local family over for dinner one night (and fantastic to have a dishwasher for cleaning up) but it would have been great to have an adult-sized table on the screened in porch (in case it's not clear in the picture, the table in the screened in porch is kid-sized). The lake itself is quiet with most of the sound coming from ducks (that loved the dock even when our dog was nearby) and loons. We saw only one kayaker and heard one very small motorboat the entire week. There were a couple warm days so we did turn the air on in the bedroom and then it got cold, so we turned on the heat the last night and both worked fine (although we never did figure out the cast iron stove in the living room, the bedroom one was plenty of warmth for both rooms). The shower had good pressure (in the master bathroom, can't speak for the rest of the bathrooms). Even though our weather was pretty much perfect, the ping pong and air hockey were a great treat for my family as we prepared dinner upstairs. Bug zapper didn't seem to actually work (turned on, but moths seemed to be crawling around on the "zapper" part), but we didn't really experience any bugs anyway (many years I come home covered in bites, this year -- just one). Deer head didn't bother the dog at all (in case you have one that tends to get scared and bark at strange objects). The only thing that might keep us from renting here again is the bed in the master bedroom. I know it's a rental so you have to sort of lower expectations, but a better bed (especially now that those foam ones you get in the mail are so cheap and pretty decent) would have pushed this place into the 5 star category.

Great location perfect for families!

I've been going to camps all over Maine for 50 years. As I get older the romance of camping has given way to comfort and location. This property fits both of those criteria. First, the location is on a very quiet pond in the small remote town of Eastbrook. What's is nice is it is only 25 minutes to the ocean and Ellsworth, 45 minutes to Bangor and many other inland areas. Next is the camp itself. The property is on a dirt road that winds through a farm. It is a good road and well maintained. The camp is actually a newly rebuilt house that has a nice daylight basement with lots of stuff for kids to keep occupied, such as ping pong, air hockey and their own place to hang out. The main level has a screened in porch and a nice deck with patio furniture. There is several hundred feet of water frontage so you have no issues with noisy neighbors. A path winds down to the dock where you can sit on lawn chairs and take in a nice view of the lake and good shade on hot days. The house is only a few years old so most features are in great shape. A few old fixtures, such as doors, have been kept from the original camp to give it some character. The master bedroom on the first floor is large with a very nice queen bed. The bathrooms are all well appointed a pleasure to use. The kitchen is well stocked with all you need to cook. The living room shares open space with the kitchen and dining area table. It is a bit sparse on comfortable furniture with only a single sofa. Views are limited on the first floor since the lake is barely visible. There is a nice 40 inch tv however it is mounted 7 feet off the floor so it is a bit challenge to watch. Upstairs are an additional bathroom and 2 bedrooms along with an office desk with computer if needed. If you have a family you'll love this set up since your kids can have their own rooms and if its a rainy day they have lots of books, movies, and games to play. Wifi works well through out the house, high speed internet is a challenge in this area, so 3meg/sec is about the best you'll do, still a nice plus. Cell coverage is weak. I'd give this property 5 stars if it had better views, TV was better positioned, and the addition of more comfortable furniture in the living room and screened porch would be a great addition. The cleaning staff could improve and bushes need trimming in the driveway. Michael is a pleasure to deal with and I'd recommend his property to anyone.

About the host

Hosted by Mitch Goldman

Host profile image
My parents bought this property in the early 60's: They were both teachers and had summers free to live in Maine. As a result I vacationed and summered in the area for my whole childhood life. I held jobs in the blueberry business both raking by-hand and on a farm co-op receiving and transfer station. I grew to appreciate the abundant wildlife and natural beauty that this site and the surrounding area had to offer. I learned that Acadia National Park is the only National Park in the North East. By day, if it wasn't blueberry season yet, I swam in the lake, read (you'll have tv and internet), hiked or biked down the dirt road or just generally communed with nature. The Owls, Loons, Toads and Cicadas are a nightly symphony.

Now I bring the kids back to do the same. They love to wander on the dirt road, swim, kayak, play ping pong, and air-hockey, and have the nightly campfire and s'mores. All on a quiet and private 4-acre lake-front site.

Why they chose this property

Lake-front site across a dirt road from 100's of acres of Blueberry field.
It is a great location with relatively easy access to Ellsworth, Bangor (I-95), Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park (ANP) and the less-crowded but still spectacular Schoodic Peninsula section of ANP. Please contact me if you have any questions.

What makes this property unique

4-acre lake-front site across dirt road from 100's of acres of Blueberry field. Built in 2010, 3 levels of living. Full kitchen with Dish Washer, Washer & Dryer, WIFI, two 45" Flat Screen with DirecTV & Netflix button (byo account info), 4 kayaks (and paddles and vests) included, Ping Pong table, Air Hockey table, Mini-Basketball, Computer with Internet Access, DVD player, VHS player, AM/FM Stereo. Full size fridge, 5 burner stove, dishwasher. Air Conditioners in MBR and upstairs. Heat in all rooms. Lake views from all rooms. Unique walkout basement with 2 sliders and French doors. French Doors to Screened Porch off Kitchen/LR lead to open deck with gas bbq and patio table.
