We had a great time at Shore House and enjoyed our 4 days exploring Swan’s Island and figuring out the ferry schedule and process. The rustic house is beautiful and the setting gorgeous. We had a good time there!
It was our first time to Swans Island, we had the best time. House was perfect and right by the water, would recommend 10/10. Can't wait to come back, such a special trip!
We loved the shore house! It is a stunningly beautiful area and the shore house is very comfy while still giving a rustic feel. We enjoyed hearing the waves from the porch, looking at the stars, and eating lobsters. We ran out of propane at one point and Julie was very responsive and got us coming again within a few minutes. It was a great experience and we would definitely go back again.
This Maine island cabin and location were perfect for a seculuded and quiet vacation with my wife. The views at the cabin, as well as from the hikes and lighthouse, are National Park worthy! The restored wood fired cook stove was a real treat to cook on and kept us comfortable during the cool nights. There is also a full size gas range, oven, and Weber grill. Swans Island is a gem! It is a quick ferry ride from Bass Harbor and Acadia National Park. Go visit the fisherman's co-op for the freshest lobsters and TIMS store for local Burnt Coat Oysters. Truly the best lobster and oysters we've ever had and the cabin had everything we needed to prepare and enjoy them.
This was an amazing trip. The house needs some adjustment but in general it was a wonderful experience.
The wooden stove was awesome, my child (22) loved to cook in it. The house is in a great location.
If you have a furry friend be prepared for ticks.
Make reservations with the ferry so you can leave when you want.
Have fun!
I probably shouldn't reveal what I'd like to keep a secret, but the Grace family are such gracious hosts and the house such a gem that I feel bound to record my family's joy from this summer as from summers past. Along with their adjoining house on Swans, this one is in the middle of paradise. We hope to return every year, for as long as we can.
Beautiful spot with perfect access to beaches - property is very rustic!
Overall great place with rustic ambiance! The kitchen is a bit of a mish-mosh and definitely ask ahead if they have even some basic needs. As this was a “replacement holiday” for our usual trip to a very remote cabin in Canada it definitely lived up to our expectations, but others might find it a bit more rustic than they’re ready for.
Linens were generally clean, provided towels are reaching their “end of life” and furnishings are “quaint.” There’s also some leaking plumbing that we brought to the owners attention which definitely needs fixing before that bathroom floor gives way.
As the weather was so wonderful we did not get a chance to try the wood stove, but the provided kettle grill (a nice touch) outside was used often!
We’d definitely stay again and really enjoyed the beaches and quarry pond for swimming! Everyone was so nice, so with some mindful distancing and appropriate mask wearing during this COVID crisis, you’ll have no problem taking in all Swans Island has to offer!
We had a delightful time. The beach near the house was fun to explore. The history of the house is interesting. The house is situated with nice views of a meadow and water nearby. The market is within walking distance. This is a great place to relax and explore.

About the host
Hosted by Julie Carr
The house is owned by a family who has lived year-round or summered on Swans Island for 40 years.
Why they chose this property
Our family (two adults and four kids) bought this house in 1987 as a summer house. In 1993 our parents moved to Swans Island full time to run the Atlantic Blanket Company. At that time they built the near-by property, VRBO 287076 (Meadow House), out of which they wove their blankets and ran their company. We fell in love with Swans Island because of its spectacular beauty. The four kids, all grown up now with families of our own, continue to vacation on the island.
What makes this property unique
The water is so accessible! There are multiple beaches - rocky and sandy. There are no crowds, very little noise. We also love the near-by quarry pond where we can swim and dive for hours. In late July and August, the island is overflowing with berries! If you want a quiet vacation by the ocean, this is the place.
