About this property
Historic villa with private pool
Set in a converted 18th-century countryside villa, a 10-minute drive from Carovigno and 5km from the nearest town, San Vito dei Normanni, Villa Magnolia offers four spacious en-suite double bedrooms, a private outdoor pool, extensive grounds and an outdoor dining area.
The rooms have high ceilings, some with the unique stone star vaulted detail which is a feature of the area. They are decorated with antique Italian furnishings in keeping with the 18th-century style. Original stone details were preserved during renovation and form an integral part of the bathrooms. Original tiles and stone flooring have been preserved throughout the villa. Each room has garden views and a bathroom with walk-in shower and a hairdryer. Bed linen, bath towels and pool towels are provided for your stay.
The kitchen is a recent addition, no longer the outside wood fired oven! It has all the equipment to make your stay easy and as enjoyable as possible (dishwasher, washing machine (outside line for sun drying), stove, oven, fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, coffee machine (Nespresso), microwave and other basics. There is a table and eight seats (two bar stools at counter) in the kitchen if the weather is not ideal but we expect you will want to eat outside and enjoy the gazebo area with BBQ (Weber gas), wood fired pizza oven and seating area under the fig tree and vines.
Free WiFi and private parking is available on site. We have four mountain bikes for your use, if anyone is sporty and wants to do the morning dash for pastries to San Vito dei Normani (5km). The back gate has direct access to the small roads winding through olive trees and on to a cycling route. Additional bikes can be rented in San Vito.
Popular places to visit from the villa are Ostuni 16km, Lecce 49 km, Alberobello 46 km, Polignano a Mare 65km and Taranto 49 km. The closest beach is Torre Guaceto, a 15-minute drive from the property. When we visit Lecce, we like to add on a visit to the beautiful Torre dell'Orso beach (Blue Flag status), 26km south from Lecce. We park at Parking Belvedere (take a few euro coins to pay attendant - 2023 it was €4) at the southern end of crescent bay, not built up and more natural. From here it is a short walk to arrive at the viewpoint where you will have fabulous views of the crystal-clear water, soft sand and sea stacks, known as the The two sisters.
The nearest airport is Brindisi - Salento Airport, 17 km from the property. Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport is 100 km away. Another option is to fly to Naples and then make the 360km journey from the airport to the villa. This may give you more flexibility on airline carriers as well as give you the opportunity to lengthen your holiday with a visit to Pompeii or Herculaneum.
We are happy to give personal tips/guides to our favourite activities in the area.

About the host
Hosted by Diana Cullinan

My husband and I grew up in South Africa and have spent the past two decades (or more) traveling the world, for studies, work or pleasure. We still have a strong connection to Cape Town, where we travel every year. We now live in Switzerland with our young son and our daughter is also in Europe. We look forward to one day making our dream come true and calling Puglia home.
Why they chose this property
Of all the countries we have visited, Italy is one of our favourites, and why not? The people, the food, the buildings, the light, the style and the history. In 2019 we visited the area of Puglia for the first time and loved it so much, we decided to take a giant leap and buy a home. We were drawn to Villa Magnolia immediately, it was known as "the Red Place" after its Pompeii red walls framed by white trellis work. We discussed other options, but really, there was no competition.
2022 we were handed the keys to the Red Place as her owners returned to the USA. We decided not to change her name, believing it bad luck, but wondered why the reference to Magnolia? We then found an old photo which showed magnolia trees lining the driveway. Last summer I discovered with joy the green leaves of shoots growing up from the original Magnolia tree stumps.

What makes this property unique
What made us fall in love with Villa Magnolia? The story has to begin with why we fall in love with Puglia, the colours for me. The unique combination of the deep blue sky, the red soil, grey green of the endless olive trees and the seasonal colours of golden yellow cactus fruit, purple artichoke fields, figs in shades of green to maroon and red pomegranates hanging heavy on the trees in October.
Then there is the architecture of Puglia, the magnificent white Masseria buildings scattered across the landscape and the trulli structures in the Val d'Istria area. And if you're lucky, you come across the beautiful Liberty-style buildings, like Villa Magnolia - crowned by the four centenary wild date palm trees.
