Oceanfront Cottage on Smith Point with Beautiful Water Views, New Kitchen

The Scallop is a beautifully furnished 3-bedroom oceanfront cottage on Smith Point, at the western tip of Nantucket. The house features stunning ocean views, a beautifully renovated kitchen/living area, extensive outdoor decks and easy beach access on a private path.

Smith Point is prized for its tranquility, easy access to the water and amazing sunsets. The cottage faces the ocean to the west and faces the head of Hither Creek, a salt water inlet, to the south. It is about 300 feet from a beautiful surf beach and about three blocks from the calm Madaket Harbor beach. Our house is an easy walk (about 10 minutes) to Millie's restaurant and market, and we certainly have been known to head over there for a serving of ice cream, a carryout dinner to enjoy on our deck, or some other amenity.

The living room has a beautiful ocean view and opens onto a second-story deck featuring a dining area with the same great view. Outside, on ground level, there is a patio with a teak table and chairs and a deck with outdoor chairs. The cottage also features a nice large flat lawn and an outdoor shower.

The WAVE shuttle bus is free and picks up passengers at the bus stop at Millie's. The cottage is also close to the Madaket bike path, part of Nantucket's excellent network of bike paths.

Nantucket offers world-class dining, shopping, golf, fishing and outdoor adventures. For kids, the island offers great day camps, sports lessons and other activities. You will love it!

Our turnover day is Saturday. We can only accept Saturday to Saturday bookings unless you have first checked with us and we have worked out an alternative schedule.

The owners were wonderful to deal with and the home exceeded the write-up and pictures. If you are looking to be "On the Beach" you can not get better than this property and owners. This was our first VRBO rental and would return to this property without hesitation.

Wonderful week at Scallop

We had a wonderful week in Madaket - (Smith's Point) at the Scallop Cottage. Amazingly comfortable and well equipped cottage. We immediately felt at home and settled in to a week of relaxation, amazing sea views from the cottage, and enjoying fantastic Madaket beach watching surfers and seals and meeting friendly islanders and visitors. We look forward to returning next year.

Lovely house on gorgeous beach

This is the perfect beach house for a family to stay at in Nantucket. My 4 boys, ages 1 to 11 all had a great time staying here last week. The beach in front of the house cannot be beat, it’s gorgeous, private and has the most beautiful sunsets. The house is updated, comfortable and well-equipped with everything you need to make you feel at home. The wraparound decks with amazing ocean views were perfect for family meals. Having Millie’s within walking or biking distance was so convenient! Their food was outstanding…we got take-out lunch and dinner here several times, as well as iced coffees and ice-creams! Tom and Susan are great hosts and were so helpful with their recommendations. My family and I would not hesitate to stay here again in the future!

Great September Week in Madaket

We highly recommend this rental house. It is super comfortable with fantastic furniture including comfortable beds and couches. The house is bright and cheerful. The most amazing piece are the views. We have been renting in Madaket for 23 years and this house was beyond any doubt the best place to stay. Easy access to the beach and Smiths Point for sunset. Millie’s is great for dinner and a very short bike ride. The house had everything we needed and the owner was super responsive. We highly recommend this house.

Madaket Beach Front

We stayed for a week in June. Weather was cool and foggy; just right for exploring and photography. The cottage is typical Nantucket. Grey shingle exterior and light and airy interior. Very clean, well kept and supplied. Short walk over the dunes to the beach. Tom was great with communication and recommendations. Madaket is a good beach location away from the crowds. I would recommend having a rental car as it is quite a ways from town although the Waves shuttle is also convenient. Be prepared in the summer for large crowds and traffic in town. Also, be prepared to spend more than usual. It is expensive, similar to Hawaii.

Quintessential Nantucket

What a wonderful property! Fabulous views of dunes and sea, bright and airy, perfectly equipped. One of my friends, who has been a realtor on the island for 40 years declared it her new favorite Nantucket house which is really saying something. The Huttons, our hosts, were responsive to our every need going so far as to buy martini glasses and a cocktail shaker when I inquired about it. All in all, a wonderful experience and we will return.

On The Beach in Smith Point

If you like being on the beach in a simple beach community that harkens back to what Nantucket used to be, this is a great place to stay. If you prefer to be in/near town and everything that comes with it or in high-end fancy/luxurious accommodations/locations, this is not your slice of life. If Smith Point works for you, this house is excellent. It is very clean and comfortable, well stocked with everything you need, only 50 yards from the crashing waves of Smith Point beach, which serenade you to sleep at night, and provides wonderful views of the ocean. Although the location is "Old Nantucket" because it is simple and not fancy, the house has modern furnishings, appliances, flooring and plenty of light. The hosts are top-shelf. They are responsive and a pleasure to deal with. There were four of us in our party and we had plenty of room. The house is an A+ Smith Point rental. Steven & Terry

Wonderful Vacation

We just returned from a wonderful vacation at the Scallop! This oceanfront cottage is well maintained and clean. Everything was very clean upon our arrival with the beds freshly made. There were plenty of linens and towels available for us. The Scallop has everything you need for a fabulous, stress free week at the beach - wonderful new kitchen with cookware, tools, appliances, dishes, glasses, flatware, etc.; beach chairs, beach towels, umbrellas, wagons etc.; charcoal grill; deck furniture, amazing views; a path to the private beach; outdoor shower. Tom, one of the owners, was great to work with. He was always quick to respond, very pleasant and helpful. I would 100% recommend staying here and we certainly hope to return.

Perfect Location

To His was the perfect place for our vacation with young kids. A beautiful beach with fun waves is steps away, you can walk a few blocks to the bay side which has calm waters perfect for paddle boarding, and after you put the kids to bed you can enjoy amazing sunsets from the deck. The house itself is clean and well-equipped. And the owners were very helpful.

The Scallop was the perfect get away, whether for just a couple or for a family/small group. The views from the house and deck were stunning, and the beach was just a couple minute walk away. The house had everything you could need, with an updated kitchen, comfortable accommodations, and all sorts of extras. The location is nice and quiet, giving you your own private getaway, but still an easy drive or bike ride to downtown, Cisco, or whatever else you want to do on the island. Tom was the great host, providing all the information we needed while keeping things simple and easy. We would highly recommend to anyone looking to experience the best that Nantucket has to offer.

This is a truly great beach house. An upside down house, the views are just amazing, and the living-dining-kitchen arrangement is perfect. Sometimes it feels like there is nothing between you and the ocean (there is a small dune with an easy to walk private path to the beach). The house has a very well-equipped kitchen, even for a serious cook. There is also a large table, perfect for eating and jigsaw puzzles, as well as two outdoor heavy teak tables and many great teak chairs on the deck, along with an umbrella, a drink cart, and other niceties. Nice additional pantry for storage and extra small appliances and glassware as well as a mini-fridge to supplement the nice big fridge in the kitchen. (And note the kitchen is all updated with great appliances, marble countertops, and lots of dishes, flatware, pots and pans. The living room is really nicely furnished with 3 comfy sofas and a great audio-video system. And well-chosen art and decor too. But the very best thing about this place are the views— through every window, upstairs and down. Because of the proximity to the beach (a 2 minute walk), from the great deck are unbelievably gorgeous views of both sunrise and sunset, since we have east, south, and west views. And in fact the north views are great too. The exterior and interior lighting is well done, and there are even USB ports in the kitchen. I have stayed many vacation places where the lighting is terrible and it’s hard to find a place to plug in and recharge, Not so here! The 3 bedrooms are fully furnished, and comfortable, and the two downstairs bathrooms are both updated and work well, with quality faucets and showers, etc. Lots of hot water on demand. Nice big laundry room too. It’s an easy 20 minute drive to town, and a lovely bike ride— the Madaket bike paths are really well maintained. A terrific house in a perfect location. The homeowners are clear and communicative, and very quick to respond and helpful. Love this place!!!

Fabulous

Wonderful home -- light, airy, spectacular views, literally steps from the beach -- in Smith's Point, the most wild and beautiful part of this wild and beautiful island. The upside-down layout puts the bedrooms on the first floor, open living room on the second, with windows facing three directions -- including a spectacular south-facing view over the dunes to the crashing waves. It's unbelievably dramatic in, or just after, a storm. There's a wraparound porch and a table to eat outside -- your food gently seasoned by the salt spray drifting over the seagrass. Tom and Susan are terrific hosts: calm, relaxed, unassuming, wryly funny, and responsive when you need them. We love this place.

Best Nantucket family vacation

We highly recommend this home! We have stayed at various parts of Nantucket but Madaket was by far our favorite! The sunset, the close proximity to the beach and the peaceful sound of the ocean were fabulous! Tim and Susan were wonderful hosts. They were very responsive when we emailed them. The scallop home was clean, well equipped and beautifully decorated! We will be back but want to stay longer next time!

Gorgeous place to stay!

My husband and I rented The Scallop for an extra long weekend to celebrate our 25th anniversary. My sister and her family, along with my youngest son, joined us on Saturday. The location is amazing, and the open floor plan upstairs, makes for beautiful views all around! All the bedrooms were comfortable, and along with the two full bathrooms, there was plenty of space. The kitchen is really nice, with a huge refrigerator, nice flattop electric stove, lots of counter space, and plenty of plates, cups, and utensils. The beach is just a short walk, and there are plenty of beach chairs, and coolers to pack some refreshments! We had an awesome weekend, and would love to come back someday!

Simply lovely

The Scallop is perfectly located in my favorite part of Nantucket...Madaket. The new kitchen is great and wonderfully equipped and the upstairs living area is comfy and inviting. The house is set up so that every door or window gives you ocean or creek views - deck is really nice and the bedrooms are comfy with a lot of places for your personal belongings. But one of the best things is the owners. There is nothing worse than trying to get all of your business done around a rental with unresponsive, crabby people. Year after year, we have enjoyed working with the Huttons and continue to be very thankful for their willingness to share their special place and for being gracious and helpful. Thank you!! We will definitely be back soon.

Madaket Serenity

I've been going Nantucket for over 30 years and have stayed many different places throughout the island. The natural beauty of Madaket is unmatched and The Scallop is right in the middle of it. The house is perfect for taking in all that Madaket and Smith's Point has to offer. The views and proximity to the beach and ocean are perfect. Beautiful surroundings and peaceful with the best sunrises and sunsets anywhere. We found the house well equipment and very clean. I look forward to returning there again on future trips to the island. The Scallop will be my first choice for beauty and serenity on Nantucket!

Beautiful!

My family recently stayed at The Scallop and were very happy. This house and location definitely exceeded expectations. The views from the deck and house were amazing. There is so much to do on Nantucket, yet it is so relaxing at The Scallop that we never wanted to leave. The house has all the amenities, and the newly renovated kitchen/living room has a fresh feel to it, with amazing views. Large yard for games is a plus, too.

We bought The Scallop in 2004, after selling a cottage in Surfside, on the south shore of the island. We have two grown boys who still love their visits to the cottage and the chance to explore the island.

Why they chose this property

We chose the location due to its wonderful access to beaches and boating opportunities, as well as lack of traffic (both car and air traffic). Crossing over the bridge to Smith Point is like taking a step back in time. We find it incredibly relaxing.

What makes this property unique

The cottage offers easy, quick access to both the surf beach and the harbor beach. You can go downtown and explore the shops and restaurants, or just stay out in our peaceful part of the island. We are a short walk from Millie's restaurant and convenience shop. Nantucket also offers a great network of bike trails and a great shuttle bus system, including a stop near the cottage.
