About this property

Holly’s Cottage in the Woods is meant for people who love to unplug.

Holly’s Cottage in the Woods is meant for people that love the outdoors, love swimming in natural water and want to unplug. It's a unique 40 acre property in the Sierra foothills Yuba River area, with a Tudor style cottage built by a British shipwright from wood milled on the property. This completely off-the-grid house is a mix of wood, stone walls and shiplap giving it a truly unique character, like cottages in the English countryside. There's plenty of room for multiple tents plus an outbuilding. The final 3 miles to the house are on a gravel road.

The house sleeps six comfortably. There's a very large bedroom with a California king bed that sleeps two adults and room for a little one if needed. Plus a single reclining daybed that sleeps one more. There's another bedroom (open walls) that you pass through to get to the main bedroom, with a double bed that sleeps two. We have a futon couch that sleeps two in the living room, a dining room table that seats five, kitchen, full bath, washer/dryer.

There's a fully stocked kitchen with a gas stove and small fridge running on propane. The kitchen is stocked with all essential cooking herbs, oils and spices. There's a culinary herb garden right out front, just below the kitchen window. The house is stocked with dishes, pots, pans and bakeware necessary to cook amazing meals. Just bring the food! The closest store is Mother Truckers.

Swimming; If you are familiar with the Yuba River then you're likely familiar with the epic lazy days around the many swimming holes. We have a few floaties you can take down to the river but please bring them back with you.

Hiking; There are multiple trails that lead out to BLM land just steps from the house as well as endless other places to hike all around the area in tall restored forest.

Cooking & camp; Chilling outside. Once fire season passes, we have a large fire pit adjacent to the house which rests in front of another structure that can be used to prep food for cooking on the open fire outside, or on the BBQ . If you're coming with a large party the structure can also be used for camping.

Lazing; We have a couple hammocks. Both are strung near the firepit. It's a perfect spot to curl-up with a book or chill-out looking up at the stars while dinner is being cooked.

Utilities; The house is fully solar powered and heated by wood burning stove in the winter months. No air conditioning. There's a ceiling fan. A generator is used to pump the well when the water tank needs refilling (would not be necessary for a weekend stay). A full water tank allows for about a week of running water when the house is in full use (4 or more people) for showers, laundry, dishes etc.

Gardening; We have a large fenced-in garden with multiple raised garden beds, feel free to harvest what is there to cook with and if you see yourself as a return guest, grab a garden bed to plant if you desire; get your hands dirty and return for another getaway to reap the benefits of your labor.

AT&T cell coverage works well but other carriers do not as well. There's a cell signal booster. We use our phone's hot spot to get computers online for email and downloading movies, find where your next hiking trail might be or the swimming hole, what restaurant to try in town but this house is for those seeking a homemade relaxed experience.

We also have a visitor book with some of our favorite things to do in the area

Magical Cabin

My stay was incredibly peaceful and satisfying. Full exposure to nature! Far from the road. Just quiet and perfect. Wonderful for a small friend get together or a silent retreat. Cabin is magical- beautiful architecture with high ceilings and windows that bring the outside in. Highly recommend!

Excellent retreat in the hills of the Yuba River

Great place for getting away from it all. This peaceful cabin in the forest is quiet with all the amenities needed to enjoy the time away. Tony was a fantastic host with great communication and clear instructions. The bed is very comfortable, the wood burning stove is convenient, and all of the appliances worked well. The place is pretty good size and can easily accommodate 6 adults inside. I highly recommend staying here and I certainly look forward to returning.

Exactly what we needed and what was described.

Spent a fantastic 3 nights at the cabin off grid. The experience was exactly as described in the listing. Not sure what the issue was for the most recent guest, we had no issue with rodent feces. Bedding was clean and relatively comfortable. Sure there are some cobwebs up high in rafters. Where I come from we call that flying insect control. Would highly recomend and will go back again! Side note. Hosts said only ATT had service. On verizon, at the top of the stairs, we had just enough service to make texts and phone calls.

Dirty; bugs and rodents

When we arrived, the home was dirty. There were rat/mice feces in the silverware holders, on dishes, on the table, in the sink, in the bathroom including the sink and bathtub. There was a LOT of cobwebs which were all over the door frames, pots and pans, and dishes near the sink. The toilet and shower were dirty and I had to clean feces off the sides of the toilet. The bedding stunk like other people's sweat and dust. I had to wash all the bedding on the one bed we used (master) before we could sleep in it. The dryer took forever to get the comforter dry. The bed was extremely lumpy. During our stay, we noticed that we would leave the home to explore the area, being gone for more than 5 hours each time, and came home to things getting moved. Electric candles that were on a shelf or on the keyboard upstairs were now on the ground and the keyboard was moved. Curtains in the master were moved. Noises at night that sounded like they were coming from inside woke us up and alerted our dog. We will not be staying there again. BTW, I washed all the pots and pans hanging from the hooks and wiped down the door frames and cleaned all the silverware and the container as well as cleaning utensils before I used them.

Off grid get away

Loved this charming house far from the maddening crowed. If your into witchy home crafted homes off grid and far removed then you’ll love it. Host communicated great. Easy to get into. Charming. It is an old home done house so if your expecting perfect or modern this is not for you.

2 night stay

It was beautiful there. The description of the river made it seem like it was close by to the cabin. It was disappointing it was a 20 minute drive away. It was really hot at night, it would have been nice to be abl to go to the river from the house.

Woodsy Cabin Great For Getting Away From it All

We had a few days of R&R. Played Scrabble, read books, lazed by the wood burner, took slow walks in the woods, and enjoyed the quietude of the area.

Off the grid

This cabin is definitely off the gird. If you want to see beautiful nighttime skies and enjoy time in the woods this place is perfect. It is about 45 minutes outside Grass Valley so plan accordingly. We enjoyed our stay and were able to unwind and disconnect.
