About this property

Nevada City Retreats: Mama Bear's Cabin. For sale soon!

To our wonderful guests, past, present and some future (through this summer 2024),

It has been a long wonderful road through this vacation rental experience. We have become friends with some of you over the years, and welcomed back many of you time and again to one of our Bear Cabins. Some of you we have not met yet , as we will continue to welcome guests until late summer this year.

Twenty-four years ago we first purchased the property that we named Nevada City Retreats, and it is over seventeen years since Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear cabins have all become full-time vacation rentals. Drue and I have decided to lighten our responsibilities and spend time traveling and pursuing our other interests in this last chapter of our lives, so we are selling the property and hoping to find new owners will love it as much as we have.

We are most appreciative of all our guests and thank you so much for your wonderful comments, respect and support over the years. We hope we have enriched your lives just a bit. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or are interested in discussing a possible purchase. You can reach us through this website.

Wishing you all Happy Trails,
René and Drue

The cozy Mama Bear's Cabin up the hill from Papa Bear's Lodge and Baby Bear's Cottage (see listings #46584, and #72370), is available year round.

The cabin has two bedrooms and 1 bath. Please note that the base rate of $165 is for 2 guests only. The additional guest charge is $20/nt. per person up to 5 guests max. There is a queen-size bed, a double bed and double pull-out futon (in living room) to accommodate up to 5 people. It is best suited for up to 4 adults or a family of 4 or 5 with young children.. In the living room is a gas hearth stove. that heats the space nicely. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics. Enjoy the large hot tub which awaits just off the back deck.
Some games and books are provided for your leisure. This is a great place for the honeymoon couple or small family. If you are booking Papa Bear's Lodge for a larger group, this is the perfect place for overflow guests who want a little more privacy.

Hiking and biking trails are near by. Gold panning, (you can rent pans locally) golf ( at Nevada County Country Club) miniature golf, and go cart rides
( at 49er fun park) are also close by. Kayak and paddle board rentals are available at Scotts Flat Lake or Rollins Lake. We are only 3.5 mies from the beautiful South Yuba River.

Please note that we are next to an 80 acre summer camp. During the months of May-August camp is in session and you will hear 'happy' camp noises from time to time during the day. Quiet hours start at 9:30 p.m for the campers, 10:00p.m. for our cabin guests.

Swimming, tennis and a children's play ground are in Nevada City and Grass Valley. We are just a 45 minute drive to the nearest ski area for downhill or cross country skiing, and sledding. Downtown Nevada City is two and a half miles away, where you will find fine dining, wine tasting, great theater, musical entertainment, art galleries and a fun shopping experience in this charming historic gold rush town.

Historic Grass Valley is just another three miles away with more of the same, and we are 1 1/2 hours drive from either Sacramento or Tahoe.

Amenities: Down comforters on some beds (in winter). Satellite TV, DVD/CD player, DSL and wifi, gas hearth stove, ample parking. There is a phone for local calls. Cell phones do not work well here but you can text or use wifi calling. This is a non-smoking property.

If you are celebrating a special occasion, let us know and we will gladly make dinner reservations for you, or obtain special items such as Champagne, Chocolates, or a Special Bouquet.

PLEASE CHECK WITH OUR LOCAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OR SPECIFIC BUSINESSES FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Activities: Theater, fine dining, wine tasting, musical events, shopping, galleries, hiking and biking, boating, fishing, swimming, tennis and other outdoor activities are all located within a short distance.

Come join us for the Fourth of July small town parade. It is wonderful, as is the Constitution Day parade in September. In June on Father's Day weekend come see the famous bike races down the middle of town. In July we have three 'Summer Nights', the last three Wednesdays in the month. The streets are closed to traffic and lined with food and craft vendors.
In July is the return of the Worldfest with 8 stages of music, children's programs, workshops, dance, artisans and international food.

Don't miss the Bluegrass Festival, Music In The Mountains, Halloween, Mardi Gras, Fall colors, etc., etc., etc.

Enjoy Victorian Christmas, the first three Wednesday nights, and the last Sunday before Christmas. You'll find artisans, food vendors and all the shops open late. The gas streetlights, Victorian carolers, and friendly merchants make this the place to visit and shop for the holidays.

Area: The Yuba River, with many deep pools and massive smooth boulders is only minutes from our home. A beautiful trail meanders along its banks for miles.
Lake Vera is a small lake surrounded by summer camps. Our cabins are located on 5 acres next to Camp Augusta. In the summer months (late May to mid August) you can hear 'happy camp sounds' as children enjoy swimming, zip lining and singing around the camp fire, then off to bed by 9:30, quiet hour.

We want your lodging experience to be most enjoyable. Part of that enjoyment comes from selecting the vacation property that best fits your needs. Mama Bear’s Cabin was built in 1985 and is 650 sq. ft., a good space for 2 to 4 people. The style is simple, clean and unpretentious. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics you need for cooking, but if you are a gourmet chef, this may not be the place for you. Some of the dishes are hand made pottery. Not everything matches. There is no dishwasher. Garbage needs to be disposed of carefully to avoid attracting those wild critters. Collecting compost scraps and recycling is required, and a conservative energy usage strongly encouraged. There is no central heat. There is a hearth stove, a wall furnace. and a window air conditioner. Please feel free to contact us at any time should you have questions or concerns.

A Cozy, Gorgeous Paradise
My friend & I fell in love at first sight with Mama Bear's cabin. Everything --all the lovely touches in decor, the sweet bears throughout, artful lamps & beautiful quilts --all of this shows so much care and loving attention. The setting is gorgeous. I loved looking out at the brilliant green pines with sunlight filtering through. Rene and Drue have furnished the cabin generously, with everything one could need to feel cozy, comfortable, welcome, and well cared-for. Thank you so much! We hope to return.

Good stay
Comfy beds and love a hot tub. Quiet and private location. View of the woods. Property is a bit messy. No cell service as expected, and cabin wifi was unusable. Had some cleanliness bumps of cobwebs aplenty and some kitchenware needing cleaned before use. Not as fully stocked of a kitchen or supplies in as good of shape as we expected from reviews, but we made do. Loft ladder is dicey and living/dining is sparse. Overall a quaint stay in a beautiful area.

Cozy getaway
My husband and I live in a small city and were ready for some relaxation "away from it all." We got exactly that at Mama Bear's cabin. We spent three nights in February and loved the private, cozy ambience. Despite the woodsy, rural feel of the property, everything you could want to do in the Nevada City/Grass Valley area is an easy 9 to 15 minutes away. The cabin was comfortable and welcoming. The heat had been turned on before we arrived, which was a lovely touch that allowed us to settle in easily. All amenities were in good working order, and the instructions provided were clear and easy to find. We hope to return when the weather is warm enough to enjoy the nearby lakes and rivers.

Happy Memories
We made many happy memories in this cabin. There was a family of deer that visits every day. The setting was so peaceful and relaxing. Both Rene and Drue were great communicators and accomodating. The hot tub was a nice touch.

Wonderful
Great property. In nature, hot tub , electric fireplace, comfy bed, area, beautiful trees close to downtown Nevada City but far enough away that you feel like your in the country. Rene was wonderful with communication and making sure I had a great stay. Really loved being at Mama Bears and will definitely come back.

About the host

Hosted by Drue and Rene

Host profile image
Drue is an avid runner, and René is a potter. We both share a love for acting and can be seen in local productions from time to time. Obi is our beloved 3 legged, one eyed poodle.

We love Nevada City and the wonderful community here and have lived here over 24 years. We love sharing information about the area with our guests.

Why they chose this property

All three of our cabins (Papa Bear's Lodge, Mama Bear's Cabin and Baby Bear's Cottage) are on the same property. The lodge was our family home for a number of years and we loved living here. When we decided to move into town next to Rene's studio, we knew others would really enjoy the lodge and smaller cabins. And we were right!

What makes this property unique

Privacy, nature, and a short drive to the beautiful South Fork of the Yuba River. It is a magical place. Wild turkeys, deer, foxes, coyotes, racoons, squirrels and the rare bear siting can all happen right here.
