TERRIBLE Greedy Host! Host double books through Another booking site

I reserved this property weeks ago, telling the host I would be there with my 2yo son. Day of arrival there is no communication from host, I message before check in time for information on how to check in. No reply. My son and I arrive a bit after 7pm and go to the grocery store for food and to call host for check in instructions. Host ignores my call at first, then calls me back 5 minutes later. Host asks why I'm calling, I explain I need check in instructions, host confused asks me if I'm sure... I tell host yes today is the day of our arrival and we are ready to go to the home. Host then apologizes and says another family is already checked in. At this point I realize any argument is futile, host does not care about our predicament. I ask host to cancel the reservation and begin the refund process. Host has the audacity to message after they cancel, after 8pm now, and state "the reservation is canceled and you should be able to book another vrbo". So after 8pm on a Fri night in a very small town and the host somehow thinks I'd be able to secure another vrbo. Hotel rooms were all booked, so my 2yo son and I stay in a very sub par motel, only rooms I could find, only other option was driving a couple hours to nearest town. Oh and vrbo says it could take 15 business days for me to receive my refund! Terrible host, terrible polices on vrbo, terrible experience.

I’m the host behind El Escondite, a peaceful hideaway in the Kern River Valley. I created this space because I truly enjoy sharing the beauty, quiet, and adventure of this area with travelers from everywhere. Whether you’re here to explore Sequoia National Park, spend time on Lake Isabella, or simply disconnect and breathe, my goal is to make your stay comfortable, relaxing, and memorable.

I care about the little details; cleanliness, clear communication, local recommendations, and making sure you feel welcome the moment you arrive. Guests often tell me they chose El Escondite because it feels like a retreat, tucked away but still close to everything. Hosting this space has become something I love, and I’m always here to help you get the most out of your visit.

Why they chose this property

I chose this area because it offers the perfect balance of quiet relaxation and easy access to everything the Kern River Valley has to offer. The neighborhood is peaceful, surrounded by mountains, wildlife, and open sky, yet it’s just minutes from Lake Isabella, hot springs, scenic trails, rafting spots, and the gateway to Sequoia National Park. It’s a place where you can truly slow down, enjoy nature, and still be close to local attractions, small-town charm, and outdoor adventure.

What makes this property unique

This property sits on historic Indigenous land with a peaceful atmosphere you can feel the moment you arrive. Guests enjoy private access to Tillie Creek beach, seasonal lake views, and some of the clearest night skies in the valley. Inside, the home blends Native-inspired décor with modern comfort; smart TVs, mini split A/C and heat, a cozy loft, and thoughtful touches throughout. Whether you’re stargazing, hiking, kayaking, or simply enjoying the quiet, this space gives you a one-of-a-kind experience you won’t find anywhere else.
