About this property

Abiquiu on the Mesa/ Designer Adobe Deluxe Vacation Home.

Perfectly designed by a local architect, south of Abiquiu this large, airy pueblo style home is filled with desert light, and beautiful vistas from its many windows. Using southwestern elements and handcrafted furnishings the high ceilinged living room has a kiva fireplace, cozy down filled white sofas in an open floor plan with a dining area that seats 10. The gourmet kitchen boasts a Viking Range, Asko DW, concrete counters, and a complete pantry. A few steps up from the living room by mesquite stairs is a quiet den complete with TV and a day bed that sleeps 2.
Two ample bedrooms (king and queen beds) have tiled ensuite baths. A large eastern portale facing the mountains is complete with outdoor fireplace. The house sits snugly on 30 + acres and borders the State Land with trails down to the Chama River.
There is a separate bathhouse with sauna and serene resting room. Wonderfully landscaped with desert flowers, the home is a peaceful and beautiful retreat.


Indian ruins are within walking distance. Do not forget to hike along the ancient arroyo to the Chama River.
Wildlife can be seen from the huge windows, which lend this home passive solar heat. Built on several levels this architectural home has beautiful fenestration which encompasses views from every angle.

Close by are the old Abiquiu pueblo, the non-excavated ruins of Poshuouinge, plus San Juan, Santa Clara and San Ildelfonso Pueblos.

Not to be missed are Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keeffe had her studio, Christ in the Desert Monastery, Abiquiu Lake, the Piedra Lumbre basin.

Colorful mesas give way to high mountains with Alpine meadows.

From late March through November the Georgia O'Keeffe house in Abiquiu is open for guided tours. Santa Fe and Taos are nearby for day trips. So are Chaco Canyon, Chama, Pagosa Springs, CO, Los Alamos and the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs.

You might want to come out when the cottonwood trees are yellow and orange during the annual Abiquiu Studio Tour (Columbus Day weekend) in October, or one week later for the El Rito Studio Tour.

All seasons in Northern New Mexico are sensational.

Additional Information: We have a free internet phone which is connected to wifi. Flat screen tv and dvd player with plenty of good films and books. All pets are welcome in our home. We do charge $ 10/day for for extra cleaning.

Peaceful, private, lots of nature

Very private and peaceful place if you really want to get away from it all.Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Kitchen was stocked with everything you need if you are fond of cooking. Loved that you can go hiking nearby, and bird watching right outside of the kitchen window. Loved this place!

Beautiful and Serene.

Beautiful location with breathtaking views You can walk for miles in any direction as state property is literally at the property’s fence line. The setting is quiet and peaceful. The property includes a private sauna as well as wood for a kiva that keeps the home cozy in cooler months. We enjoyed several walks along arroyos and even to the Chama river which is difficult to access for the public. would highly recommend staying here.

An absolutely amazing location with stunning views

Lilyan and Chris have created the perfect Mesa get away. The home is so welcoming and the views are amazing. The home is well equipped with everything needed for a relaxing stay. We were fortunate enough to meet some of the neighbors and their sweet dogs, which added to our stay, and Lilyan was a mere text, call, or email away. She provided us with so many great recommendations during our stay. We will definitely be back! Thank you for a wonderful vacation in the midst of the pandemic. We felt safe the entire time and truly enjoyed the respite your amazing home provided.

10/10 highly recommend! The location is stunning and the house is great! We live in Albuquerque and this is our favorite stay we’ve done in the Abiquiu area in terms of being a perfect meeting point of natural beauty/tranquility and being only 1 hr 45 minutes from Albuquerque with limited driving on gravel/dirt roads. We have stayed at a few more far flung and harder to reach places in the Abiquiu area that were worth the trip but it’s amazing to have all the same natural beauty and peacefulness with less trouble. I had my dogs with me and it was a location where I didn’t feel worried about them getting into trouble while they went out to go potty and such, even without them on a leash. We will certainly be back!

We LOVE this place!

We just returned from our second trip to this gorgeous property. The house is beautiful and the 360 degree views are spectacular. We were fortunate to experience storms roll in and out on a daily basis and the the color of the sky and landscape fluctuated hourly. We just poured some wine and kicked back and relaxed on the large open porch. The house has all the amenities you would need to cook nice meals and just settle in for a while. We have always gone by ourselves but we already planning a group trip because the flow of the house is perfect for several occupants to have their own private space. We can't say enough nice things about this spot and the owners. They have always been so helpful and easy to get in touch with. Thank you for sharing this incredible spot!

Tranquility

This home is absolutely gorgeous and also very comfortable. The location is 360 degrees of desert, mountain, big sky, mesa southwestern beauty vistas with just enough quirky New Mexico still very visible as well. For kids, there is a dry gulch full of explorational possibility, including some fascinating critter holes. The house is truly a work of art and it will make you want to pull up stakes and build a hacienda of your own. For those seeking a respite from this frantic world, this is your place, but it is also easy drives to most of the best places in New Mexico. The kitchen is well equipped and there are condiments available which is always a giant plus. The owners have obviously put much care into this place and it's a blessing that they are willing to share.

WOW! Perfect Retreat

There is a reason ALL reviews for the Medanales Mesa Retreat are 5/5. The house is beautiful, comfy and in a perfect location. The descriptions from vrbo do not do it justice as it far exceeded our expectations. Very private location, excellent hiking right there, amazing views, abundant wildlife. Very close to many attractions. We however stayed at the house our whole trip and enjoyed coffee on the porch watching the birds, hiking, taking photos of the wonderful sunsets and in general just enjoying ourselves. The owner is wonderful. Very helpful and attentive to our needs. Finally if you look at the price and compare it to your other options, you will probably find out what we did....you can stay in a hotel room and be confined to a smaller space while surrounded by the noises of other people or you can stay at the Medanales Mesa Retreat for about the same if not less and get total privacy, amazing views and all the space you need while being surrounded by birds, bunnies and nature.

Ideal Home to Explore New Mexico

I don't know that words exist in the english language to describe how sublime this home is. It was spotless when I arrived and the host was beyond kind and extremly helpful. The property is gorgeous and quite literally breathtaking. I cant wait to visit again! Also, New Mexico is a lovely, kind, and beautiful state. I fell in love. Please visit!

Mesa Getaway

This beautiful, tranquil home and property were the perfect places for my wife, two dogs, and I to unwind Thanksgiving week! The kitchen was well equipped for making our Thanksgiving meal. The windows provided a phenomenal view to sit near the fire and stare out for hours--and the passive solar works so well! Everything was better than described in the listing. Lilyan was an exceptional communicator before and during our stay even sending tips on cooking at high altitude. The house book was also a great resource. We hope to return again soon as this was such an exceptional experience.

Spectacularly beautiful retreat

This custom designed home fits into its high desert mesa setting perfectly. Every window frames a stunning view, from sunrise to sunset. Multiple patios provide ample opportunities for relaxing in the pinion scented air. The sauna is beautiful and rejuvenating. You can enjoy a peaceful retreat and never leave the property, or partake of the ample unique offerings of nearby Abiquiu, Ojo Caliente, El Rito, and Carson & Santa Fe national forests. Scenic, peaceful mesa retreat

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Lilyan and Chris’ home. We had much privacy yet the few times we encountered folks on the road they waved and we felt quite welcome. Great location to explore Abiquiu, Santa Fe and the hot springs at Ojo. It was so relaxing, open and spacious, yet cozy, we slept well and completely destressed.

Beautiful, peaceful, private & comfortable!

What a wonderful location! We usually stay in or near Abiquiu, but this year decided to try this spot a few miles south, and we loved it. The location is super private, the house is wonderful and incredibly well stocked for visitors, and the natural surroundings provided constantly changing light and scenic beauty—from summer-like sun to light snow squalls. We had a delightful week here, including plenty of cooking and reading, day trips and time in the fabulous sauna. Lilyan is a very welcoming and responsive host. Highly recommended!

We are independent feature film producers and have traveled the world making movies with the likes of Wim Wenders, John Huston, John Schlesinger. In our many travels we have never found a place as special as Northern New Mexico and we have fun sharing it with many visitors from around the world. It is especially exciting to painters and photographers. It has such an incredible light no wonder Hollywood is coming to Northern New Mexico in the last few years!

Why they chose this property

We bought our piece of paradise from our old friend and neighbor in 1998 and she convinced us to build a house with a local architect and builder. 'a casita' The process was wonderful if at times perplexing because the local artisans never quite understood what we were talking about! We ended up with a wonderfully eclectic and delightful mix of styles of the southwest. A house filled with light and spirit!

What makes this property unique

This property borders thousands of acres of state land and though it is rural and wonderful it is not remote. Our wonderful local architect Mike carefully picked out the best views from the window and angled the house perfectly to the sun. We had so much fun building it, picking the tiles and fixtures and inviting the local craftsmen to make our furniture and doors and plaster the walls and make our home unique, filled with light and yet cozy.
