About this property

The Bungalow at Afton Mountain Retreat

This 1930's Sears Roebuck home has been completed renovated to establish the modern conveniences we love yet sustain the charm we all look for in old homes. Located on 4.5 acres with views of Afton Mountain, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the vineyard hillside at Veritas. The home features a completely open concept floor plan fit for entertaining! Gather around the 9' dining table for delicious meals made from the completely stocked kitchen that features a farmhouse sink, quartz countertops, custom cabinetry and stylish lighting to pull this rustic modern kitchen together. The conveniently located laundry room, complete with a Washer/Dryer also doubles as a pantry and coffee station. The family room is just off the entry and so cozy with two sofas and a large 64" TV to watch games and movies. Original features of the home, the built-in cabinets with antique glass doors keep the charm gleaming in this home.

The first floor includes a spacious main bedroom with walk-in closet. It is equipped with a desktop for the working professional or fit for a Queen getting ready on her big day. The main level bathroom is drenched from floor to ceiling with marble tile with a restored 6' clawfoot cast iron tub that also doubles as shower.

The original set of stairs leads to two more bedrooms (1 Queen and 1 Queen/1 Twin) as well as a full bathroom and landing with a workspace nook that boasts great mountain views. A little surprise awaits behind the hobbit size door in the upstairs bedroom with a play room for families to enjoy.

It will be hard to decide between sitting on the covered front porch Adirondack chairs with swings or moving to the enormous back deck complete with covered seating for relaxing and a dining table that stretches across the 30' wide deck. It all overlooks the grounds of the property that you are free to roam and explore. Coming Soon will be a play area and rustic fire pit in the back of the property along the Tunnel Branch Creek that runs through and is constantly bubbling.

There is plenty of room for everyone to find their special place to stretch out and recharge yet small enough to keep everyone gathered together for time well spent to unwind and relax. Whether you choose to set out for the day to explore or stay all day on the property, you are sure to enjoy your surroundings and the beauty of this area in any season of the year.

About the host

Host profile image
Hi there! My husband, Damond and I built our forever home on one acre in the lovely town of Crozet! We met while attending the University of Virginia and we got married and lived in Charlottesville after graduating. We love Charlottesville but just needed more space for our kids to run so we built our home in Crozet. We spend a lot of time in the nearby area of Afton along Route 151 going on hikes, visiting the local breweries and vineyards - all the things we recommend to our guests to do! We not only own the spaces that we rent out to our amazing guests but we spend time in those spaces as a family. I am a Realtor at Nest Realty and being a super host has been an avenue of real estate that I enjoy. We built and remodeled our properties and take a lot of pride in them to attract our guests to our little slice of heaven in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Why they chose this property

Filled with character and charm, this 1930 Sears Roebuck home has been completely remodeled. If you don't know anything about a Sears Roebuck home, they were also referred to as "kit homes" and sold from the Sears Roebuck magazine during the depression era. This one in particular is called the Wesley model and consisted of about 22,0000 pieces for the "average man" to put together and cost about $2,500 for the full kit. The history is rich in the home and on the property. The former Railroad foreman of the Crozet Railroad tunnel is who originally built this home in 1930.

What makes this property unique

Original floors, stairs, banisters and floor plan. We tried to keep all the charm but open up the floor plan with new features that make this home more inviting and cozy to be in.
