About this property
A Southwest Retreat in the Enchanted Forest of NM!
A private rural retreat located in the high desert forest of northern New Mexico, this beautiful abode is tucked away amongst old-growth juniper and piñon pines. If you like being in nature but prefer not to rough it much, this place is for you. Because of the quietude in our neighborhood, we ask that outdoor quiet hours from 9pm - 8 am are respected so as not to disturb the neighbors. Please do inquire about weddings & special events: we can sleep 25-30 people, & accommodate more for day use.
The space
If you love being in nature, long for a respite to reconnect and recharge, and also enjoy local arts and entertainment, this place is for you. The town, (village is more like it), consists of about 150 residents, a cafe/general store and a post office. And it's an easy 40 minutes to Taos or a nice day trip to Santa Fe. Taos Ski Valley is 55 minutes away; Red River and Sipapu are 1h 15m.
The property itself is 45 acres of forested wonderfulness. Each of the 3 unique and well-appointed houses has at least one attendant casita, (small house). There are 19 beds total, not counting the camper trailer and 5 tent sites. Our kickin' green house yields veggies and herbs most of the year. We can recommend a number of incredible local cooks who can cater a special dinner or stay on site and provide all your meals. Other services such as massage, music, metaphysical work, and yoga can be arranged in advance as well. This is an excellent getaway for groups, families, or individuals in search of peace and beauty. *We also do permit certain types of group celebrations, so please inquire about special occasions- we should have a new and wonderful event space available by late spring of 2023, (currently under construction).
The large studio with a sprung floor is ideal for all sorts of retreats, but it is not a party space- no shoes, food, or drink inside other than water. However, we are currently renovating another building which will be perfect for more festive group gatherings. Other exceptional things about the property are the 2 fire pits, a spiral labyrinth, 3 lovely walking trails, and 3 separate horse pens with shelters. The soil is sandy and great for riding in the national forest nearby.
The three miles of dirt roads to the retreat are passable year-round and give the feeling that you are "out there". Although network television is non-existent and cell service is sketchy, there is fast WiFi, (100 mbps), at the Main House, the Ranch House and the Q House, as well as DVD players, a nice diverse library, and plenty of board games. We also have a volleyball and a croquet set for outdoor fun. A horseshoe pit will be coming soon.
If you'd like some off-site adventure, Taos is close, and Santa Fe is about an hour and a half away. Taos Ski Valley is one hour door-to-door and boasts world class skiing. Another gem, Ojo Caliente Spa & Mineral Springs is 25 minutes away. You can also visit ancient Indian cliff dwellings, hike in the mountains or on the mesa, go up in a hot-air balloon, or saddle-n-paddle in the Rio Grande Gorge National Monument. A day trip to Abiquiu, 45 minutes away, will take you to some amazing scenery as well as Georgia O'Keefe's house and Ghost Ranch.
We love hosting individuals, couples, families, small retreats, and folks traveling with horses. The fabulous location and homey, heavenly feeling of this sanctuary in the forest is beyond words!
Hope to hear from you! :)
Guest access
The pricing, cleaning fees, and buildings available are dependent on the number of guests in your group. And we can host up to 30 in the summer, (if you count tenting), and up to 25 in the colder months. I'll provide you with a special offer for the pricing to rent the whole retreat. If you stay more than 4 nights you'll get a little discount, as well. The Studio and the horse pens are additional. The kitchens are fully stocked, especially the Main House kitchen. Amazing 45 acres of beautiful, forested land with sage fields, mountain views, and walking trails.
Other things to note
Because there are actually 3 contiguous properties, I've also listed them separately if you don't need the entire place: #3041196, #3041199, and #3041198. They are far enough apart that there is no guest interaction if rented separately.
We have fiber-optic internet at 100 mbps in the Main House, The Q House, and the Ranch House- great for multiple Zoom conferences and WiFi calling.
Because of the altitude, (7000'), we recommend drinking lots of water and taking Chloroxygen starting a week before your arrival. (Available in most health food stores). Also be sure to bring sun-block and lotion- it can be quite dry sometimes and very sunny!

About the host
Hosted by Elizabeth Brownrigg

On Valentine's Day in 1990 I flew to New Mexico for a visit and immediately understood why they call it the "Land of Enchantment." This magical state, with all its art, spirituality, and incredible light, drew me to buy property in Carson, just outside of Taos. I cherish it here because it's so serene and so rural. (I'm originally from the sticks in northeastern PA, but I spent two decades in NYC and San Fran). As an artist/designer, healing arts practitioner and nature lover, my vision has long been to create a sanctuary and retreat center in this incredible land for like-minded individuals. It is truly an oasis in the high desert for families and groups and a haven for artists and healers.
Why they chose this property
On 45 acres of land we’re deep in the forest yet very close to the Orilla Verde National Monument. The heritage of the ancient Indian culture and the expansiveness of the land and sky create a sense of grounded spirituality. The sound of the wind blowing through the pines and the sweet smell of sage is intoxicating. The nearby mountains provide an incredible backdrop. When I need my urban fix, Taos and Santa Fe are not far.
Love it!
The location of Vista Verde Retreat is ideal. The three miles of dirt roads to the retreat center are passable year-round and give the feeling that you are “out there”. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended in the snow and in the springtime mud. The "town" of Carson consists of about 150 residents, a café/ general store with great food, a post office and a fire department. The remote, peaceful area provides a respite for the most harried of individuals.
For those who want a variety of day trips and activities, Taos and Santa Fe have many unique draws for tourists who love the Southwest: shopping, gallery touring, dining, and the Pueblo, to name a few. The local culture is flavorful. For outdoorsy types, I can attest that the rafting, skiing, and hiking provide plenty of exercise and magnificent views. Soaking at nearby Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs is a great way to end, (or start) any day, and we’re lucky to have it so close by.

What makes this property unique
I moved to New Mexico with the intention to create a retreat center for artists. That vision grew and expanded to include families, groups, and the healing arts. It's very quiet and beautiful here in the middle of nature, but not too far from many of the wonderful tourist attractions the Land of Enchantment has to offer. Come visit and connect with the land!
