About this property

Babich Building – B1 – Upper 2BR

Welcome to the Grape & Grain Haus, a beautifully preserved 1926 Neoclassical building located beside the iconic Kegel’s Inn—a historic 1924 Prohibition-era landmark. This property blends Milwaukee’s Old-World charm with modern comfort and sits in one of West Allis’s most vibrant and walkable neighborhoods.

A Building with Real Milwaukee History

Designed by The Hinckley Co. and originally owned by Paul Babisch, this two-story building once housed the Grape Juice Products Co., a creative part of West Allis’s Prohibition-era beverage culture. Its classic architectural details—brick façade, stone trim, shaped parapet, and ornate entryways—showcase the craftsmanship and bold style of the 1920s.

Today, the building is home to boutique apartments and Still & Oak, a craft distillery taproom on the first floor, making it a living intersection of Milwaukee’s historic grape-and-grain heritage.

The Neighborhood

You’ll be staying in one of West Allis’s most convenient locations:

• Walk to American Family Field (Brewers Stadium)
• 5 minutes to State Fair Park
• 10 minutes to downtown Milwaukee
• 10 minutes to the airport
• Quick access to the Summerfest grounds, lakefront, VA Medical Center, and Froedtert Hospital
• Surrounded by cafés, restaurants, local taverns, Walgreens, gas stations, and major bus routes

With easy freeway access, you’re truly minutes from everything Milwaukee has to offer.

Next to the Legendary Kegel’s Inn

Right beside the Grape & Grain Haus is Kegel’s Inn, one of the region’s most beloved German restaurants. Opened in 1924 and still operated by the Kegel family, it’s cherished for:

• The iconic Friday Fish Fry
• The famous boneless duck
• Authentic schnitzel & spaetzle
• Classic Old Fashioneds
• Warm, neighborly hospitality

Guests often walk over more than once—and we highly recommend it.

Parking

Overnight parking is offered in the Kegel’s Inn west lot.
Cars must be moved during restaurant business hours (2pm–9pm).
Street parking is also available nearby.

A Stay That’s More Than Just a Space

From its Prohibition-era origins to its lively beer garden and distillery taproom, the Grape & Grain Haus offers a place rich with story and soul. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway, a Brewers game, a business trip, or a longer stay, you’ll be sleeping inside one of the most unique historic properties in Milwaukee.

In town for a concert

We were really happy with the location and the apartment was accurately described. It's a nice little flat. The location was good and the next door beer garden and German restaurant were great to have right there. Be prepared to climb some stairs. The parking isn't ideal since no overnight street parking is allowed without a temp free permit (the city website process is a bit cumbersome and unclear)--the folks at the German restaurant said to park in their small lot (as did the owners) but it was always full. The permits and street parking worked out ok in the end. It will be nice to have the coffee shop below when it opens.

Howdy!
We are Julian & Stephanie Kegel. We are the fourth generation operators of Kegel's Inn. My Great Grandpa, John Kegel opened this prohibition speakeasy in 1924 and ever since, has been the local's go-to for Authentic German fare in the city. We sure love our restaurant, our little city on the lake and the people in the neighborhood surrounding us, but we haven't always been restaurant folk here in Milwaukee. Stephanie & I met in 2010 while we were both guiding in the small coastal town of Seward, Alaska. Both of us, being from the Midwest, had fallen in love with the West Coast, the mountains and the fresh air that came with working in the outdoors. With several years of guiding behind us, we both longed for family support and the proprietorship that came with growing roots in the Midwest. We welcome you and the idea that Milwaukee is a great city, one we lovingly now call home. So please, kick back and enjoy your stay at one of the best-kept secrets in Milwaukee!

Why they chose this property

Located in the heart of Milwaukee's West Allis neighborhood, Kegel's Inn serves up the most authentic German cuisine, where everything is made from time honored traditional family recipes. Inside you'll find a warm atmosphere, friendly service and one of the most beautiful beer halls in the country. With incredible hand painted murals, original leaded glass windows, and heavy wooden beams, one can almost hear rounds of "Du Bist Mein Herzen" reverberating in the Bierstube. Since 1924, Kegel's Inn has been the locals' go-to destination for authentic German cuisine and continues to top the charts as one of the best places to catch a Friday Fish Fry in Milwaukee.
