Casa de la Vaca II – Traditional adobe Santa Fe House on 5 Acres

For over a decade, this two-bedroom, two-bath adobe has been a beloved VRBO destination. Now under new ownership, Casa de la Vaca II continues to offer guests the perfect blend of Santa Fe charm, comfort, and natural beauty. Set on 5 private acres in the secluded Cañoncito Valley, the home is just 12 miles from Santa Fe Plaza, close to the Agora Market, great restaurants, and miles of hiking and biking trails. Pet-friendly with prior approval ($100 per pet).

The Space
Casa de la Vaca II is a traditional two-story adobe featuring exposed vigas, latillas, and a mix of brick, tile, and wood floors. The home has been refreshed throughout and is ideal for two couples or a family.
• Kitchen: New granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, Keurig, blender, toaster, cookware, and spices.
• Living Areas: Cozy living room with smart TV (bring your streaming logins), sleeping nook for 1 adult, and a sofa that can fit 1 child. Bright sunroom with large windows for capturing stunning sunsets.
• Bedrooms:
• Master bedroom – Queen bed, wood-burning fireplace, and en-suite bathroom.
• Guest bedroom – Queen bed, plush linens, and adjacent guest bathroom.
• Extra Features: Laundry with new washer/dryer, 100 Mbps high-speed internet (fast for Cañoncito), board games, books, and a portable massage table with disposable headrest covers.
• Outdoor Spaces: Private courtyard with grill and seating, perfect for morning coffee, yoga, or stargazing.

Special Notes:
1. Water – Our water comes from a shared underground well and is filtered through triple ozone, multi-stage filtration, and reverse osmosis for drinking. While perfectly safe, it may have a mild sulfur scent common in mountain wells. If you prefer city water, you may want to stay in town.
2. Access & Parking – All-wheel drive is recommended in winter. You’ll drive 800 feet of unpaved road before reaching our gravel driveway. Parking is available at the stonework by the right entrance. A complimentary Level 2 EV charger (NEMA 10-30 with Tesla adapter) is available in the carport. 3. Main House - there is another rental home adjacent to this property on the left which is the guest house. There is a courtyard separating the two homes. We ask our guests to be respectful of other guests andd neighbors and keep noise to a minimum. Each home has their own private entrances and outdoor spaces.

Location & Activities
Casa II borders a 4,000-acre nature preserve with well-marked hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. Hiking sticks are provided for your use. The area is home to hummingbirds, wildflowers, and mountain views, with almost no light pollution for spectacular night skies. Santa Fe’s art galleries, shopping, and renowned cuisine are only a 20-minute drive away.

Cleanliness & Comfort
We follow enhanced cleaning protocols, with extra attention after pet stays, so all guests feel comfortable and safe.

Pet Policy
Well-behaved dogs only (sorry, no cats) are welcome with prior approval and a $100 fee per pet. Please crate dogs when left alone and keep them off the furniture.

Place of serenity

This adobe home was an incredible find! When you walk to front door thru the beautiful entry arch, you can already feel yourself relaxing! The sunporch was a lovely place for morning coffee. The kitchen was stocked with what we needed for meal preps and nicely updated. Bedrooms were comfortable and were perfect for 2 couple stay. We would highly recommend this lovely home. The owner was very responsive with any communication needed.

Nice Property for first visit to Santa Fe

This was our first time visiting Santa Fe and it was nice to have property a little outside of Santa Fe. We were able to enjoy a few restaurants close to the property as well as the quiet and serene outdoors.

Stargazing gem

Came here with our three kids (9, 7 and 4), and had a great stay. Beds were comfortable, the house was so quiet, and we took full advantage of the various outdoor seating options. Kitchen was well stocked, and we made several yummy meals. The stargazing at night was truly wonderful, and we were even able to catch a meteor shower on our last night. We purposefully chose a home outside of town, and the drive to and from Santa Fe and other attractions was reasonable.

Family trip to Santa Fe

The host was very responsive and checked in to make sure we settled in comfortably. We enjoyed our stayed and the place was nice when it snowed. The location was more remote and further from the center of Santa Fe than we anticipated. We have stayed in Santa Fe several times and this is the most remote we ever stayed. Other than the location, everything else we good.

We would not recommend this home but on the plus side there were tons of flowers & birds to enjoy. We did not realize we had to share the home with other guests; had we known there would be very little privacy we would have not stayed. There were people coming and going from the other unit but the last guest had 2 large dogs who ran everywhere and scared our small dogs which made it hard to even take them to the bathroom. The house was generally clean but when we arrived I wanted a shower; there were several large clumps of long black hair on the floor master shower. There was a hover fly infestation just outside the front door on the Spanish broom plant which made it impossible to enjoy the outdoors as there were millions upon millions of hover flies circling nonstop. All of the doors around the house are either non existent or do not fit in their frames and the door handles are all extremely loose. One bedroom has a curtain instead of a door. We were unable to access the house from the sunroom several times because the door handle was so loose it wouldn’t open the door and it just came off in my hand. My husband had to take apart the handle and reassemble just so we could access the home. There was no dishwasher detergent provided even though they asked us to run the dishwasher on check; we had to purchase this. The listing said AC wasn’t necessary but we found it miserably hot in the house so we used the wall units almost nonstop.

So great! Our dream home.

Awesome property and 5 adults very much enjoyed our stay. Yes it’s remote, but that’s what makes it so great. Beautiful sunsets and stars we haven’t seen in many years. The house is beautiful, cozy, and clean. The view is wonderful (could be spectacular eliminating just two trees blocking what would be a much wider amazing view). The smaller bedroom needs additional a/c flow on hot summer afternoons, and the master shower needs a simple shelf for soap, shampoo, razor, etc. Sure, there are always a few suggestions we have for our vacation rentals, but this place has very few. We just left and already planning to get back. Highly recommended!

Relaxing stay outside of Santa Fe

We spent 4 nights at this property and had planned on doing some sightseeing but after venturing out to the Santa Fe Plaza and seeing the crowds we decided to just stay at the house and relax. Mornings were spent watching the hummingbirds and nights were spent stargazing - the Milky Way is easily visible naked eye from this location. As others mentioned the water smells a bit but we just bought bottled water at a grocery store and were fine. The grocery store, Upper Crust pizza and Cafe Fine are just down the road - 10 min tops and it was easy enough to order food for take away and enjoy it back at the house. We had two dogs with us and appreciate the dog friendly rental. The owner was very responsive to emails and questions. Would definitely stay there again.

Forest views

Great forest and mountain views in a fairly private rental a reasonable drive from Santa Fe. Nice kitchen and bathrooms. Kitchen well stocked, but not cluttered. Nice amount of windows for natural light and forest views. Unique interior wood, stone, and tile construction in typical regional Adobe construction. Lots of outdoor patio and deck space in a private setting. Unit is part of a duplex. We hardly noticed the neighboring unit. Each has their own parking and entrance with good separation between the two. Road is not very walkable, however there are several hiking areas nearby, accessible by driving.

Secluded, Rustic Comfort

We rented CasadeVaca II in Santa Fe because we wanted to visit the Albuquerque Balloon Festival and spend a little time in Santa Fe. It's a 1-hour drive to the festival and 10-15 minutes into Santa Fe. CasadeVaca II is located in the mountains/hills east of town, and feels pretty remote - exactly what we were hoping for. We were able to sit at the table on the deck and watch the sunset behind the mountains without seeing any other houses, just trees, hills, and sky. The house itself a pretty cool place. For anyone wanting a genuine Santa Fe experience, CasadeVaca II feels like a house that's been there for a century or two but with modern amenities and comforts. And there's a pizza joint and a grocery store 8-10 minutes away. You know, for the necessities : ) Finally, we had the good fortune to meet the owners as they came to town to stay in an adjoining unit a few days before we checked out. They were great hosts and seemed happy and willing to ensure that we had a comfortable stay. I highly recommend CasadeVaca II for anyone coming to Santa Fe for a visit.

Santa Fe

Our family loved our stay at Diana’s home outside of Santa Fe. We stayed for a full week exploring the area with our three teenage children over spring break. The house was easy to get to, just about 15 minutes outside of the city. The view from the porch was beautiful and we enjoyed the adobe architecture and southwest style. The sunroom was a nice space to sit and relax on a warm day. The house was clean, looked just as described, and we had great communication with the host throughout our stay. We were able to easily connect to wifi at the house. The house worked well for the five of us, and one of our children slept on the twin-size bed that’s located in the living room. As described by the host, the water is from a well and does have a bit of a sulphur smell. There is filtered water at the kitchen sink that we used for cooking. We recommend staying at Diana’s place and would return when visiting Santa Fe in the future! Some highlights of our trip included Ghost Ranch- we recommend horseback riding and the Oppenheimer movie set tour, skiing at Ski Santa Fe, visiting Meow Wolf, Bandelier, and Pecos National Historical Park.

Secluded, yet close to everything

Beautiful views and beautiful lodging. There are so many lovely sitting areas, it's difficult to decide where to get settled! Peaceful and quiet. And still only 5-8 min drive to a major grocery store (Agora at El Dorado), and like 15 min drive to Santa Fe's Plaza. Other excellent restaurants nearby. Major hiking trails (dogs allowed), excellently maintained, are 0.5 mi down the road in both directions from the property. The wall unit ACs in master bedroom and living rm work well (but do note that second bedroom lacks AC and relies on fans). The smell of the highly mineralized tap water takes getting used to, but there is a purified tap for drinking and cooking. The host Francis is excellent with communication. Overall, a lovely place!

Quiet, scenic, peaceful, comfortable getaway for the weekend

Wanted somewhere to go close to home, and found this was the perfect solution. An hour away ,up in the mountains with a great view. Quiet, clean and beautiful home. Lots of places to sit and enjoy conversation, listen to the birds and relax. All the right things on hand, so we could cook, or a 15 min drive to downtown Santa Fe for restaurants and shopping. I came up to have a visit with a family member, and this was just what I wanted for a quiet visit. It is best suited for visitors over 12, as it might be challenging to watch small children on the stairs, as well as the terrain. The host provided detailed driving instructions which were so helpful. She responded quickly to questions and was so nice in her communications. I would definitely want to come here again. Beds were comfortable and the decor was well thought out. Loved the old New Mexico style of the home. The star gazing was spectacular. Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!

Best of both worlds

This was the perfect getaway for my husband and I. Being tucked into the woods allowed for peaceful relaxation away from people and noise. While also being a close drive to fabulous restaurants and activities. Pet friendly as we always travel with our pup. I would highly recommend. Best of both worlds for vacationers who like outdoors/ alone time and a few classic tourist activities.

Peaceful and tranquil place to get away!

This is a great cozy little place to get away and was set up perfectly! The sunroom was one of the best places to hang out with nature and feel like you’re away from it all! About the host

Hosted by Diana Olivar

Host profile image
Cory and I met in Chicago. We would visit the southwest where I was born and raised and he would often ask, “Why don’t we live here”? Granted we were usually escaping the Chicago winter and enjoying 60-degree weather. We eventually moved back to my hometown of El Paso, Texas for family reasons where we have lived for the past 10 years. Cory being an adrenaline junkie loves all things outdoors. Although, he loves the El Paso desert and the 330+ days of sunshine (so he can downhill mountain bike and ride motorcycles), he also craves the winter slopes. Our 11-year-old son is doing a great job of keeping up with Cory on the black diamonds. We found the perfect compromise when we landed on Casa de la Vaca in Santa Fe! A beautiful, serene mountain get away nestled in the foothills of magical Canoncito. It’s a short drive for us and we love to stop along the way in Albuquerque. It is so kid friendly that we do trips to the museums, Explora, zoo, Mama’s minerals and our favorite Sawmill Market. In the summer, we can escape the heat in EP and with so much to do in Santa Fe we have a great place to visit all year round. We couldn’t be more excited to enjoy our second home and share it with family & friends and now thanks to platforms like VRBO with guests when we are not in town. A bit of a win, win. We love to travel and enjoy good cuisine, so Santa Fe really fits the bill. There are so many great restaurants, hiking trails, museums, spas, festivals, the opera, skiing, farmer’s markets, the second largest art market in the country, nearby Taos and Chimayo and the list goes on and on. It really is a cosmopolitan gem in the high desert. The VRBO vacation rental opportunity has allowed us to do what we love; meet new people, travel, and share our stories. We hope we get to meet you and hear your story. Best, Diana and Cory

Why they chose this property

Casa de la Vaca II (two bedroom) Entire home, sweeping views, secluded in the foothills of Canoncito Tranquil and Serene. The main home on the right has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and sleeps 5. Nestled up in the foothills with panoramic views sits this Canoncito/Santa Fe Charm house on secluded 5 acres, just a mere 15 miles (20-minute drive) to Santa Fe’s historic downtown plaza. Serene and exquisite, you will encounter majestic Mountain views and with almost no light pollution you will experience the most incredible evening star gazing! You will be surrounded by gorgeous local plants, flowers, hummingbirds, and pines. This peaceful sanctuary is surrounded with birds and wildlife. Enjoy the gas grill, patio seating, break out the yoga mats and take in the breathtaking views! Namaste. All-wheel drive is always recommended especially during winter months, in case of snow. You will drive up 800 ft of unpaved road to reach our private gravel road to our home. Convenient parking is available in front of the stonework on either entrance. Cleanliness is of the utmost importance. To help ensure your safety and well-being, we have a cleaning service who is utilizing best practices for enhanced cleaning and disinfecting vacation rental properties. We also have the absolute best internet -100mbps for Canoncito. So, if you must work you can do so without a problem. The smart TV is available for use with your personal streaming platforms. Board games, cards, and books are also available for family entertainment.

What makes this property unique

Other things to note: Cuisine -We love to cook and have some essentials in the kitchen for your convenience. At the nearby Eldorado community, you can find gas, and groceries at the Agora market. There are also a few local eateries we like to support. Of course, we have Whole Foods, Trader Joes's and other chain supermarkets in downtown Santa Fe. You happen to be in one of the food capitals of the world so take advantage of the amazing cuisine that Santa Fe has to offer. Pets: We welcome well-behaved pooches. Sorry, felines only dogs are allowed. Pets are allowed with advanced approval at $100 per pet. This fee is included as we take added measures to thoroughly disinfect and sanitize the home to ensure there is no trace of a pet after each stay. We appreciate your cooperation in crating your pets when left alone and not allowing them on any furniture. We know our pets are family and we want them to travel with us, we have a cockapoo of our own, so we know. We also need to ensure that we respect all of our guests who may have sensitives or allergies and strive to deliver the best experience in our homes. Nature and your surroundings: You are surrounded by a 4,000 acres nature preserve with miles upon miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. These trails are very well marked and range from easy strolls to more strenuous hikes. As you drive down Ojo da la Vaca road you will see two areas to park to access the trail heads. We have hiking sticks available during your stay, adjust them and set out and explore. The items in the house are for our guests, so please feel free to enjoy. After a full day feel free to set up the portable massage table which has disposable covers for the headrest. There are also top rated spas in Santa Fe to choose from. There is so much to do and see in Santa Fe and the surrounding areas. Please check out the Welcome book for our personal recommendations. We look forward to hosting you during your stay in Santa Fe!
