About this property
Riverfront luxury in the woods - main level master bedroom
Four bedroom plus game room w/ futon, THREE full baths, sunroom/office, hot tub, spacious decks, master suite with Jacuzzi, 2nd bath with Jacuzzi, laundry, open (social) kitchen with modern appliances, screened porch with gas grill, and fine furnishings throughout.
The property has private river beach access to the Shavers fork river and is engulfed in trees, adjacent to neighboring 30+ acres of privately-owned undeveloped and open fields, and situated just across the gravel road from the one-million acre Monongahela National Forest.
The house features teak floors, vaulted ceilings, natural wood-plank paneling, wireless internet, 2 televisions with DVD players, stereo, and a 6 person hot tub. The game room includes a 32' flat screen TV, Wii entertainment system (games available), assorted board games, toddler puzzles, cards, 100s of other toys and games, a card table with chairs, and dart board. There are about 100 classic DVDs for various ages available for viewing.
For a cozy winter, fall or early spring visit use the forced-air gas furnace, supplemental baseboard heat in downstairs bedrooms, and a wood-burning fireplace in the living room (around ten pieces of firewood per night's stay is provided -- if you require extra please inquire). In summer, there is central A/C or a whole house fan to cool things off.
If you are looking for a remote mountain getaway and are willing to roll with what comes from a country vacation, you will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful spot!
In winter months, be prepared for snowy and/or icy road conditions by driving a 4WD or suitable vehicle. Having chains for your car in the trunk is another good option. That is advisable whenever driving in wintry conditions in the mountains of WV as the roads are often hazardous. At times the snow can be deep and it takes 24-48 hours before it is plowed, therefore you should be prepared to be flexible about travel.
The cabin is remote, so even in clear weather its narrow mountain gravel road can be concerning to those not experienced. Depending on whether the road crew has done repairs recently there may be potholes. In most cases you can drive around them, but there may be a few on the way that you’ll just need to slowly drive through. There are also no guardrails on the road, but it has several turnouts to allow cars to pass. We've been told that the gravel is not suitable for street motorcycles.
Pet friendly, but only if arrangements are made and the pet fee is paid. Dogs only please, and no more than two dogs per reservation.
Owners provide a starter quantity of paper products, bathroom soap, and laundry/dish detergent. Personal toiletries are to be provided by Guests.

Because the house is surrounded by forests, the creek, and the river, there is plenty of nature to enjoy but also to endure. Mice will occasionally come inside, and although we set hidden traps to keep them from settling in, there is a possibility that you will see them during your stay depending on whether they've found a food source recently (it could be from a prior guest -- not your own doing.) We do, however, check to make sure that the kitchen implements are sanitary at the beginning of your stay.
The bug situation is that we are at a high enough elevation to not have a mosquito problem, but there will be gnats in the field, and moths at night wanting to get into the house. There will also be plenty of dead bugs that wedge themselves between the screens and the windows.
If these aspects of nature are acceptable to you, then you will find a beautiful place of nature in which to relax and enjoy your vacation!

About the host
Hosted by Management
Carl and Larisa got married and moved to Elkins, WV in 2000. Larisa moved from DC, and Carl moved from VA. Each had prior roots in WV and longed to return.
Why they chose this property
The location is ideal -- just far enough out to be immersed in the natural surroundings, but only 25 minutes from a full-service grocery store, movie theater, Davis and Elkins College, Randolph County Community Arts Center, antique shopping, and a YMCA. It is an hour from highly-rated golf or skiing. Spring and summer bring wonderful fishing, swimming, floating, and boating in the river; winter is great for cross-country skiing on the property or nearby, and alpine skiing is less than an hour's drive. Fall's foliage is not to be missed as the house is engulfed in trees and adjacent to the 1 million acre Monogahela National Forest, wonderful for hiking right out your door. Don't miss nearby Elkins to dine at a variety of restaurants, enjoy free exhibits at the Community Arts Center, and ride the scenic trains on the Durbin and Greenbrier Railroad. Davis and Elkins College is just 20 minutes away where you can enjoy live music and Appalachian arts at the internationally renowned 5-week long Augusta Festival. The Forest Festival every fall is a big draw, with carnival rides and almost two weeks of activities.
What makes this property unique
The property that this house sits on has been in Larisa's family since 1967. In 1995 Larisa decided to start construction on the property. She designed the house from the ground up and expressed her love of wood, light, warmth, and airiness into the architecture. The windows, decks, sunroom, and porch are situated for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding views of mountains, river, woods, and fields. The ventable skylights in the living room and loft provide sunlight and the lovely sound of rainfall. You can hear the river flow many nights when the windows are open.
