The views from the property were beautiful and there was plenty of space to take our dogs out for walks on the 10 acres, which was very peaceful and quiet. The daily visits from the whitetail deer were always welcome! The cabin itself is rustic, but a great location just outside of Hill City and easy access to the trail systems. This place was perfect for our family and dogs, we would definitely come back.
The view is excellent. The silence is wonderful. The accommodation was perfect for all four of us. If you’re looking for a five star furnishings and cooking wares forget it. Everything works just perfectly. The environment makes everything enjoyable. I would stay here any time I would come back.
The views and the privacy on this mountain top cabin were 5 star. We stayed as a family of four with our dog for 7 days. Town is a short drive down the mountain with shopping and restaurants close by. We visited several sites all within less then 2 hours from the cabin: Deadwood, Custer, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Badlands, Devils Tower, and rented a side by side one day. The Black Hills did not disappoint. I would have rated the cabin a five star had the beds and the couches had been a little more comfy.
We enjoyed our stay immensely. It is definitely A rustic environment. My family and I enjoyed everything about the cabin, with the exception of the bathroom in the bedroom with the twin beds, that one needs a little bit of work. Our host was easy to get a hold of, accommodating and my family and I will definitely be back for another visit.
The views and privacy were above all expectations. This is exactly what I was looking for in my time away. Plenty of space for hiking and I didn't even feel the need to leave to go to all the tourist destinations. The cabin is wonderful and was well stocked. I will book this again for next year!!
We really enjoyed our stay there. Lots of room inside and outside. Peaceful and private lot with great views and not too far from things to do. Krull grocery store and Hill City not far. Ranch house worked great for us. Had cozy spaces and bigger spaces to hang out. Cooked inside, grilled outside. The owners communicated well.
If you're looking for a remote peaceful setting with modern conveniences, this is the place for you! The views at this cabin are unmatched; you get a panorama of the Black Elk Peak massif, the Needles and other iconic natural landmarks in the Black Hills. The surrounding landscape is sloping with small meadow breaks and booming with wildflowers and mature pines, small brush and aspen. Definitely would recommend and plan on staying again! Jeffrey and Lili are wonderful hosts!
We first fell in love with this house from the pictures, but in reality the pictures just don't do it justice. From the first moment we pulled to the end of the long, winding road at the top of the hill, we knew this place was special. The view in any direction is breathtaking, and we spent a lot of time just outside on the property watching and exploring. The house itself is a great mix of old and new, with the newer half of the house giving you a more modern feel and the original half giving you that old-time cabin feel. The kitchen has everything you could need, as we cooked and ate most of our meals at the house. Location is very convenient to everything the Black Hills has to offer, but at the same time being way up at the top of the hill makes you feel worlds away. There is wifi and a satellite TV, but somehow I don't think we ever even turned it on (which says a lot with three kids in tow). Instead we just hung out and enjoyed all the property had to offer. This place was a hard one to leave. Highly recommend.
This property was chosen for its amenities, of course, but more so for the general privacy. It is indeed a rustic cabin on a hill top!
Thanks to the tippy-top location it's never long between breezes which made for pleasant nights.
This property was our HQ for destinations in and around Hill City. We could take our dogs with us or leave them there dependent on the day's shenanigans. The dogs did great on and off leash (they're city dogs so woods were new and exciting).
The worst part was "Jeff." Jeff got into a habit of staring in the windows from the main stoop early in the mornings until our dogs would bark. Jeff didn't mind the barking, it just got us people up and we had to shoo his persistent rabbit hiney off the stoop. Jeff may live under the planks of the small porch on the original side of the cabin.
We didn't light a fire but there were options to do so; we were cautious due to the high level dangers of forest fires during our visit. That and we usually made it back bone tired and didn’t want a fire.
The amenities were great! Washer/dryer were solid; fridge/freezer good and cold; stove/oven small but in good order; internet is Starlink (I think) and made streaming easy; toilets are not compost-toilets but contemporary now; showers worked a-ok!
My partner and I felt spoiled on our family vacation and are so thankful we found this exceptional site!
My spouse and I stayed 4 nights in this fun, rustic cabin. It was the perfect place to bring our two dogs! There was plenty of space indoors and outdoors for them. We were surrounded by forest and a 360 degree view of the Black Hills! The king size bed was comfortable and the cabin looked even nicer than the pictures revealed. We definitely will come back!!
This was our first family trip to the Black Hills. Our cabin offered a peaceful & scenic experience! Literally 360° of Amazing views! We even stayed an extra day! Jeff was so nice to talk to, we would definitely stay again!
I knew from the photos that the house was designed with lots of windows, and for obvious reasons. What surprised me was the wall hangings and decorations. Quite a collection. That and the 7 elk that welcomed me 5 min after arrival.
The location is outstanding. Far enough from town for peace and quiet, close enough for convenience. The cabin is well equipped for any need we had.
The views are absolutely amazing!
The location and views are amazing. The only bathroom in one of the bedrooms is LESS than ideal for two couples. You really can’t call it a bathroom since only a curtain separates you from the beds. They may say sleeps 6 but only 2 twin beds and one King bed. A bit over priced for what you get.
This is a truly charming "rustic" cabin with a flush toilet and streaming TV. It's very roomy and bright.. Morning sun filled the kitchen and other numerous east facing windows. The mountain top was very quiet with the exception of the wind whistling their the surrounding ponderosa forest. The view of the surrounding Black Hills is spectacular. My wife was delighted with its well appointed kitchen. Our leashed dog enjoyed exploring the surrounding woods. The drive up to the cabin is an adventure. The road up to the top is scenic but also steep at times and bumpy. An AWD/4WD vehicle is recommended. The toilet is located in the twin bed bedroom so a family visit would work much better than two couples. The other king size bed/bedroom is at the the other end of the cabin. A trip to the bathroom from that bedroom is nearly the length of the long cabin, but definitely not a deal breaker for us. We hope to come back and stay longer. Highly recommend.
Great rustic cabin with fantastic privacy and outstanding view of the Black Hills range! We had a doe and fawn to welcome us home each day . As we were leaving they watched us depart! A perfect ending to a great stay! Dale Spielman
Quiet mountain top views from all sides. Cabin offers a “olden days” experience for teenagers but with electricity, running water, and Wi-Fi. Bring some cards or a board game and reconnect. If your lucky “Buster” a large black dog will come up for a visit.
The property was at the top of a mountain in Hill City, SD. There is a wonderful view of the Black Hills from this property. Jeff & Lili made it very easy to access and its a fun place for the family to visit.
Beautiful cabin provided all basic necessitys we needed. Cabin had a 360 degree mountain views. Host communications were amazing. Would definitely recommend.

About the host
Your host
Thank you for checking out our cabin! My wife and I bought this property while searching the hills for an oasis. We’ve spent many spring, summer, and fall nights here and are so happy whenever we visit (and slightly bummed when we have to leave). We love drinking coffee in the morning in the sun (usually facing southeast) and love to enjoy some cocktails and music in the evenings (facing southwest). We enjoy hiking with our dog, using side by sides to explore, and visiting Hill City, Custer, Spearfish, and Deadwood. There are new businesses in Hill City this year! Lost Cabin Brewery, Pack Mule, etc. So we’ll check those out as well. We hope you can come to the Black Hills in 2024!
Why they chose this property
It’s closer (~40min) to Rapid City. But far enough away to be at peace by the fireplace and underneath the stars. We enjoy the coupling of old school vibes with some modern amenities (Starlink, Solostove, newly installed bathroom with washer/dryer). We always feel like we jumped into a time warp back to 1970 or so when we stay at Elk Pass.
What makes this property unique
Property is on top of Elk Pass Ridge, at about 5,500’ elevation. The views are incredible and there are very few (if any) comparable properties in the southern hills. It feels very far away, but is only 10 minutes from grocery stores, bars, restaurants.
