Gingerbread Retreat is a healing respite for travelers caring for others and/or themselves. This Cozy 2 bedroom 1 bath house is outfitted with an Infrared sauna, mineral-infused specialty sheets created for more restful sleep, and water filters in the shower & kitchen, all in a planned effort to provide a healthy rejuvenating experience. Cozy living room has two lazy-boy recliners (afternoon nap??), sofa, TV and DVD player. The cute kitchen has stainless steel farmhouse sink and prep island, plus all the basic equipment needed to create your culinary requirements. Pantry/laundry room has coffee station and Full size washer/dryer for guest convenience. Both bedrooms have the aforementioned specialty sheets; bedroom one also has a reading nook with comfy chair and antique ottoman, and bedroom two a writer's desk for work? journaling, or maybe adult coloring :). The Porch area houses the Infrared sauna and small dog accommodations - if you happen to have a fur baby traveling along. Located on a corner lot in a quiet community, a children's park and church are located on the same street at the opposite end. This retreat is close to many area attractions and is less then 3 miles from Mercy Hospital Festus and Mercy Cancer Center, and just 20 minutes from St Louis Specialty Children's Care Center - South County. Also only a couple minutes from downtown Festus/Crystal City with walkable shops and eateries to enjoy. :)

Perfect stop for us!

We're full-time RVers and needed a place to stay while our camper was being repaired. We loved this little house. We were both able to work here remotely while also visiting family and friends in the area. Jenny is a great host and had everything we needed (and more) upon check-in. The sauna was the reason I picked this rental and it did not disappoint. It was so relaxing! We would definitely stay here again.

Gingerbread Retreat is a historic structure dating over 100 years old. Once a one room shack for local glass factory workers without electric or plumbing, this old gal had three different additions (that we could determine) over the years to get to the 660 square feet she is today. During the inside demo, we found evidence of the bathroom once being the outside porch (so no inside bathroom prior), found three 'extra feet' of space that had been walled off - which miraculously managed to be just enough to have a proper laundry room, remnants of ole time gas lines for lighting that must have been brought in as an "upgrade" at one point, and 4 layers deep on each interior wall, ceiling and floor that spoke of the multiple redesigns thru the decades... As a nod to all that history, we left one barnwood exposed wall in the hallway just to show off her vintage charm. Since she'd seen many prior seasons without proper care, she's not perfect, However, we took back the layers, rebuilt the walls and reinforced the foundation with steel I beams to ensure she will weather many more decades and have a few more stories to tell :)

Why they chose this property

Gingerbread Retreat was designed with the health conscious in mind. As we know (but sometimes forget) the largest organ of the body is the skin, it just makes sense to have the water we drink, and bathe in, to be the best possible - which is why filters can be found in the shower and the kitchen. Additionally, a good nights sleep is paramount for a healthy body, hence the mineral-infused sheet sets,.. and certainly not least - the Infrared sauna helps the body expel toxins by inducing a healthy sweat :)
