Peaceful, quiet cabin with great views of Glacier NP

A very peaceful, relaxing vacation, unconnected from the outside world. We enjoyed it very much. The cabin had all the amenities necessary for a relaxing stay. St. Mary’s is close enough for all the last needs. We highly recommend the Stone House for a stay to explore Glacier NP.

Excellent Location!

Stone House is well situated for exploring all that the East Glacier area has to offer. Convenient to the Many Glacier entrance and only minutes to the St. Mary Visitor Center (and Going To The Sun Road) and the Two Medicine entrance. A well-equipped kitchen, comfortable living room and bedrooms were waiting at the end of scenery packed days spent inside the Park. Thanks David-we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful views

This is a beautiful house in a quiet, peaceful location. It is a great place for exploring Glacier and Waterton. The lake and mountain views make you want to just sit and look out the window. The basement is spacious but a little unfinished.

Beautifully remote escape in the Montana wilderness

Loved staying at this cozy cabin. The house was clearly built for temperature control and staying warm even when the wind was blowing. Kitchen amenities were robust allowing us to cook meals as a family while spending time together. We were conveniently close to the Saint Mary and Many Glacier park entrances. The surrounding scenery was absolutely breathtaking.

Another great stay at the StoneHouse

I believe this is our 5th or 6th stay here, we've kind of lost track. We enjoy the peace and quiet of the Stonehouse versus the chaos and poor restaurant options in the park, but with relatively quick access to St. Mary's, Many Glacier and some of the best hiking and wildlife opportunities that Glacier Park has to offer. Once again, we saw a mother Black Bear and her two cubs out the dining room picture window just across the road in the meadow. I'm guessing it might be the same mom we've seen in previous years. Thanks again David and family for sharing your home with us. We hope to be back in 2026.

What a great property with a gorgeous view!

The Stonehouse is a really special place. The location was lovely; just close enough to easily get to the best hiking in Glacier National Park, or for a side-trip to Waterton - but also remote enough to be truly quiet and peaceful. The house is well-equipped and comfortable, the beds are cosy, and the view of the GNP mountains is spectacular. We enjoyed a special family dinner in the front yard, and our own July 4th fireworks over the lake. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thanks to David for such a great place to land when staying on the East side of the park.

An ideal spot for a Glacier National Park vacation!

This property was cozy sand beautiful. The views were spectacular and it was just the right amount of seclusion from the busy world for our family of five. We were able to fully relax and be in “vacation mode” upon entering this great spot. Really-just stop reading other reviews and snag your dates here! We stopped at both the IGA and Family Foods in Browning for groceries-trust me and skip the IGA, Family Foods is where it’s at. We also had the pleasure of dining at Rising Sun Pizza in St. Mary’s-that place is delicious. Just come here, trust us.

Beautiful place

This was a beautiful place. I personally liked staying on the East side of the park because we spent a lot of time in Many Glacier- where a lot of great hikes and wildlife are. The area around the Stonehouse is beautiful. The house has everything you need and is very comfortable. One warning, the grocery store doesn't have much in St. Mary's so you might want to get groceries before you get there. I would recommend this place to others. Jana

Another fantastic experience at the StoneHouse at Duck Lake

This was our second visit and it was just as fantastic as the first. Love the convenience to GNP and especially Many Glacier, our favorite part of the park. Enjoyed just about every meal at the house as we had everything we needed to make some fantastic meals. David, as always, was very helpful and kind. He took some fantastic pictures of our group as we were departing. Just such a comfortable place to stay and such fantastic views in every direction. Thanks again and looking forward to coming back in 2020!

Fall Stay at the Stonehouse

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Stonehouse. As far as we can tell, this is the nicest home at Duck Lake. What a great location for visiting the East side of Glacier Park. The fishing at Duck Lake was excellent and David readily offered great advice on this and other hiking opportunities in the area. The view of the peaks in Glacier Park cannot be adequately portrayed in photos. It is absolutely fantastic. The home is well-equipped, clean and comfortable. We look forward to another visit!

About the host

Hosted by David and JJ Walburn

Host profile image
David Walburn - Montana Singer•Songwriter, avid outdoor enthusiast, fly fisherman, hunter, hiker, skier, and homesteader. From 1999 to 2014, I worked at the historic Many Glacier Hotel as a resident musician, performing acoustic concerts for Glacier Park guests. I have lived in Montana for over 30 years and it's here that I feel most at home. Four of those summers were spent working nights performing and the days building the StoneHouse. It has been my mission to build something unique that people will enjoy, appreciate, and, hopefully, wholly experience this amazing landscape with its vast and beautiful wilderness. This is not your cookie-cutter vacation rental. It is meant for those who have an adventurous spirit and a love of the American West, especially Montana!

Why they chose this property

My wife and I have been summer campers on Montana's east side for over 20 years and have fallen in love with its rugged beauty and wild landscape. We created a space - a traveler's rest - that blends with this landscape. My wife and I realized that this space should be shared by those adventure travelers who want a different lodging experience other than the usual motel/hotel. It is meant for those who want to explore off the main highway, unplug from modern life for a while, and appreciate the native country and culture of Montana.

What makes this property unique

Our family enjoys waking up at The StoneHouse wondering what the day's adventure will bring. We have caught mammoth rainbows on a fly rod, rode the float tube on endless quests searching for the perfect swimming hole, took the spotting scope for bird watching, bear spotting, and star gazing. We have gone on endless hikes into Glacier, had some banner kite flying days. In the winter we have trekked in snow shoes, sledded across the Duck's Head, skijored, ice fished, wrote kids songs, talked with owls and star gazed for hours, even experiencing the Northern Lights on occasion. What will your adventure be?
