About this property

Private Pool, Outdoor Fireplace/Gazebo, Putting Green, Fully Stocked Kitchen

Go back to visit great-grandma’s house in this 1920's 2 bed/2 bath cottage with a fully stocked kitchen. Enjoy wandering the small orchard, lounging in and around the huge pool, sitting under the poolside gazebo with fireplace, and a 4-hole putting green with it's own shaded sitting area. Stress you didn't know you carried drops off your shoulders as soon as you step out of your car and onto the private family grounds.

Both bedrooms connect to the living room AND each room has its own outside access; great for some independence without disturbing your housemates! Walk out your bedroom door to a beautiful patio. Early risers enjoy the sunrise in the orchard. Stay up late chatting under the stars. The pool is fabulous for a summer swim under those stars or sitting by the fire making s'mores on cool spring & fall evenings. The winter provides its own magic with snow-covered, hibernating trees resting before spring life returns.

The Cottage at the Orchard is made for visiting! I readily encourage 4-6 additional visitors on any given day during your stay but if having more, please notify the host/co-hosts. We can provide alternate parking options on-site. Permissions for more guests and/or small private events must be arranged separately, some may have an additional cost. IM host via app for information.

Reminder: My family/cohosts share the pool, gazebo & yards with you. We may have friends visiting during your stay. We will let guests know if this is occurring & ask for the same courtesy from our guests.

Fireplace Room details:
Single-step down into this large room with its comfortable (med/soft) king-size bed. The windows open to a small, private grove with Pine Trees, wild Honeysuckle & Oregon Grape bushes providing shaded light for afternoon naps. The fireplace is filled with LED candles for evening snuggles. The bathroom shower has an extra tall ceiling and contains the apartment-size stackable washer/dryer.

Rock Room details:
What was once an exterior wall of the original structure is now a showpiece of 1920's use of local materials. A period tea cart with folding leaves allows writing or having a morning cup. Open the blinds or the door to watch the sun cast shadows through the cherry & apple trees.

Living room details:
Comfortable couch & chair with Roku enabled Smart TV. Login to your own accounts, the TV will automatically log out all of them after the end of your stay. Open space with Kitchen/Dining areas so your group can share meals & watch games together.

The large desk is available for those who still have to work. Business speed internet wifi/ethernet is part of your stay with good bandwidth across most of the property. An extra monitor and keyboard for remote office work is available upon request. Take your laptop to set up near the pool, putting green, orchard, or an outdoor fireplace as your background; imagine letting meeting attendees know the background you have is not just a stock photo!

Kitchen details:
This small but well set-up kitchen makes it easy to cook & visit & watch out the front to see what's going on in the orchard. Gas stovetop, full-size oven, microwave, and dishwasher. The table has a self-storing leaf to expand from 4 to 6 person. Refrigerator has filtered water/ice dispenser, although Spokane Valley water is very good straight from the tap.
Guest access
There is so much space on-site to walk or find a private place to sit.

The Orchard
It really is an orchard! and "Yes, you are welcome to pick whatever is in season." 20+ apple trees (4 types) which are believed to be part of the original apple groves of the 1920's & 1930's. The apple trees bloom around mid-May and have visible fruit by beginning of July, then ripen after the first good frost in mid-Sept or early October. There are 2 large cherry trees that bloom end of April/early May with the cherry crop generally ripe the last week of June & first week of July.

Pool, Fireplace, Gazebo enclosure:
The fenced 20' x 40' heated pool sits beside the large gazebo & outdoor fireplace. Pool is generally open just after Mother's day thru end of September. Fireplace & gazebo are usable all months of the year except during burning bans (pollution levels in the winter occas get high).

The Pool Rules:
Generally 8am thru Midnight. Residential Noise restrictions are in place 10pm-8am but we have found low-level music & chatter is generally okay through Midnight without issues. I am very friendly with neighbors and simply ask respect for this quiet neighborhood. Standard child-safe fence & gates are in place with additional safety cover over the pool itself. Pool release/agreement is signed by the renter and they are held responsible for actions of any in their party and any visitors.

Putting Green:
This 20' x 40' foot is on the west side of the property. Shaded by two giant pine trees and a huge Ginko tree with exotic fan-shaped leaves, it is bookend by a group of pine trees (great for chipping practice) and tall Cedar trees shading the Big House deck. Cigar & whiskey over golf have been known to happen here! Right & left handed putters are available, and one child sized.

ACCESSIBILITY NOTES:
The Rock Room has doors which are ADA width and minimal transitions between bath/bed, living/dining room. The bathroom is ADA friendly (wide spaces, open under sink, grab-bars), a shower bench is available on request, and a wheelchair ramp to the outside door can be arranged. The kitchen is NOT wheelchair friendly.

Epic house tucked in the city
We absolutely loved this place. As long as it is available, we wont stay anywhere else. So comfortable and clean. Even though you are minutes from everything, you cant hear a sound. The property is covered in trees and the pool area lit up at night is so inviting. We had two bedrooms and two bathrooms, more space than we needed but picked this place in the event our sister joined us. Debi is awesome, she greeted us out by the pool just to introduce herself. She was quick to reply with texts about where to eat, or how far something was. Truly a gem finding her and this spot.

About the host

Hosted by Cottage VRBO

Host profile image
Inland Northwest native who loves the Spokane area for its 4 Seasons and also loves travel.

I have hosted the Idyllic Orchard Cottage as a short-stay property since 2020. Widowed in 2019, I am thankful for the amazing support system of family & friends that helped create The Orchard on Valleyway and the Cottage.

The Orchard is the most relaxing & rejuvenating experience possible because my family & friends have remained supportive and are my cohosts. My two best friends (Regina & Tamara) and my parents (Linda & Earl) are to be thanked for keeping everything "at the compound" together!

Why they chose this property

My husband & I fell in love with the Big House for it's classic Craftsman beauty. We'd always loved the houses on Spokane's South Hill but had no idea the same was available here in the Spokane Valley. We "accidentally" became owners of the Orchard when we had the opportunity to purchase the Cottage next door. Removing the fence between them reunited the separate lots bringing their shared history back together.

We had saved for years and had the ability to turn my husband's dream of having both a putting green and a pool into reality. He was able to enjoy the putting green but passed away unexpectedly before the pool was completed. I was supported by an amazing person who completed the remodel/significant update to the Cottage over the next year.

I chose the decor & furnishings to give a sense of resting after many travel adventures. The Rock Room has 3 prints I've been hanging on to since the mid-1990's when my husband & I lived in Suriname, South America a largely African population from the former Dutch colony.

The Fireplace Room has Chinese silk prints and other artwork we brought back from our year living in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. My mom-in-law made the prismed quilt which happened to match perfectly!

The Living Room has a vintage map from Rand McNally and prints of iconic scenes by a Spokane artist. The needlwork pillows on the couch were purchased from a Mid-Eastern vendor with a shop in Hoian, Vietnam. There are books about the history of Spokane in it's earliest days of growth from an Indian Trading post to Railroad head for cattle and logging mills.

I share them with my guests so you, too, can feel a sense of exotic adventure ... and maybe, just maybe, you will get to travel to places near and far for your own adventures.

What makes this property unique

The first moment that visitors step out and have their first look, there is a deep breath in and a satisfied sigh followed by shoulders visibly dropping ... as if a burden is lightened. There is something about the grounds that lets you feel safe and quiets the soul, even when there is a ton of loud chatter and laughter going on.

No matter what feeds your spirit, or if you simply need a break, the cottage seems to provide it for my guests.

That doesn't even take into account the many recreational activities, restaurants, and day drives found in the amazing Inland Northwest.
